I’m deeply sorry about all the talking at the end of this video. I’ve gone to extreme lengths in an attempt to cut down on my notoriously long podcasts, even going as far as to practise John Cage’s “4:33” 40 hours per day, 8 days per week. But no matter what I do, the urge to ramble on endlessly for several seconds is too much. I just hope you can forgive me for this 😢.... Trust me I'm funny

You can bet the ends of his fingers are hard as rocks! And you can also bet the bass he’s playing has a super neck on it, that rings much easier than any cheap dime store bass, new strings helps too. But Charles is a Prodigy! A rare talent, a musical genius! I wish he would be like Geddy Lee and start a band of equally talented musicians, and turn out about 40 albums of magic!

CharlesBerthoud It shows! 👍 I’m usually not a huge fan of “tasteless shredding of classical or pseudo-classical excerpts as fast as possible” but that’s not what you do... yours are really tasteful and interesting, and musical beyond just being show-offy. Definitely a big thumb’s up from me (with a mainly classical double bass and piano background). My tastes in bass run toward Mikyung Sung (so much expression and such phrasing!) but what you do is awesome too. Approved!

This was mesmerising, and I know literally nothing about bass (I stopped pronouncing it like a fish only a month ago...) Would it fit the general nature of your channel if you would explain somewhere any basic notions every now and then? For example, what is going non- standard with the tuning here? Having said that, I would happily live not knowing if I could listen to such a piece on a regular basis. Mesmerising.
@RobFlaxMusic
@RobFlaxMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Maria Vlasiou I can help with that last one... the usual tuning for a bass is EADG. So having the lowest string be a B instead is... a mindf@ck. B to E makes sense, and that feels “normal-ish, but the wrong interval in the wrong place.” Then E up to B is a fifth, and that’s weird, and then another E again (again, a normal-ish interval, but transposed.). In other words all the strings are drastically different from their normal notes, and the interval between the strings is also messed up. On top of that, you’ll notice the tuning mentions a fifth note, F#. This is achieved by changing the highest string with the special extra gadget installed on the headstock, that allows Charles to instantly tune the string up a step (from E up two semitones to F#), with precision. This is, again, not the normal note for that string (usually it’s G, so we’re still a half step off), and now the spacing of notes between the adjacent string and this one are also fifths. Basically this is the weirdest possible tuning that sounds good.

Man, I hope once this virus scare is over (stay safe), some great opportunities open up for you to tour. It would be AWESOME for you to do a series of videos from the road, and maybe livestream shows you play. Your holy tap is more than KZbin alone can handle!!! I hope you continue to throw in these more serious videos with the funny ones-we all love them both. Anyone else who’d be on the front row of a Charles Berthoud show like this comment (if you’re still reading...)!

This song deserves a name... not just "Bass solo in whirlwind tuning." Very nice composition sir.

Between your videos and being sheltered in place, I've been inspired to pick the bass up again after a lengthy layoff.

Honestly. KZbin needs a lot more people like you. As in when I click a video I get the thing I wanted to see. Done amazingly, done better than I expected. I don't need to see 10 minutes of the same meme humor every damn video.

Backing track is progressing from just metronome duty to part of the arrangement. I like it! You could easily add a little precision, a few notes of something or a pad and mix your solos as full fledged tracks.
