This was mesmerising, and I know literally nothing about bass (I stopped pronouncing it like a fish only a month ago...) Would it fit the general nature of your channel if you would explain somewhere any basic notions every now and then? For example, what is going non- standard with the tuning here? Having said that, I would happily live not knowing if I could listen to such a piece on a regular basis. Mesmerising.
@RobFlaxMusic4 жыл бұрын
Maria Vlasiou I can help with that last one... the usual tuning for a bass is EADG. So having the lowest string be a B instead is... a mindf@ck. B to E makes sense, and that feels “normal-ish, but the wrong interval in the wrong place.” Then E up to B is a fifth, and that’s weird, and then another E again (again, a normal-ish interval, but transposed.). In other words all the strings are drastically different from their normal notes, and the interval between the strings is also messed up. On top of that, you’ll notice the tuning mentions a fifth note, F#. This is achieved by changing the highest string with the special extra gadget installed on the headstock, that allows Charles to instantly tune the string up a step (from E up two semitones to F#), with precision. This is, again, not the normal note for that string (usually it’s G, so we’re still a half step off), and now the spacing of notes between the adjacent string and this one are also fifths. Basically this is the weirdest possible tuning that sounds good.

6-8 months ago I didn't know this style existed, now I think it's amazing. I now know there are multiple artists that play similarily. Charles has to be near the top of that small group. Gets more amazing every time.
