The ossuary temple in Bassano del Grappa is a monumental church inaugurated in May 1934. Although it was originally conceived as the new cathedral of the city, it was also transformed into a military memorial which contains the remains of soldiers who died in the First World War. Construction work on the large church began in September 1908 but had to stop well before completion due to the outbreak of the First World War. The cathedral remained unfinished until 1930 when, following an agreement between the parish and the Ministry of Defence, it was decided to use it also as a military shrine.
Externally the temple, built in Venetian Gothic style, with traces of Romanesque, is surmounted by an octagonal dome which is flanked by two sixty-metre bell towers. Above the central door is the image of the Redeemer, in the lunette on the left is depicted San Bassiano, patron saint of the city, and in the lunette on the right is Blessed Giovanna Maria Bonomo. Over 5,000 soldiers from all over Italy are buried in the monumental complex, of which over two hundred decorated with silver or bronze medals for military valor. All the names and surnames of the deceased are known because the temple only contains military personnel who died in field hospitals. These men fought on Monte Grappa in the last year of the war (1917-1918). The ossuary temple also houses the bodies of four officers decorated with the gold medal and also the remains of Prince Umberto of Savoy-Aosta, Count of Salemi, nephew of the first king of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II and brother of the Duke of Aosta .
