I think most of his vids are from a romantic lens, but this is definitely the most positive of them all lmao

Mr. Mustard Oh in fact the couple dies in the car accident (the red car on the roof and then crashed at 4 minutes something, also the burning wwcomms sign) and the video is the memories that they relive while "waiting to be buried". So this is still typical Bastille but in disguise. ;)
@cheesecakelasagna7 жыл бұрын
Anna Kajak also the kids at 1:50 might just be referencing flaws... or the grim reaper!
@niranjansankar70977 жыл бұрын
Anna Kajak wait can you explain the red car again? I don't understand that part. Why was it on the roof? And then why did was it burning later? Are you sure that's the couple's car since they were driving a grey car? Although I can understand the color difference just being a discontinuity with memories.

"Our songs are not about relationships." - Dan Smith. I'm not sure what interview that's from, but I remember him clearly saying that. I am not trying to be rude, but I am saying that this is NOT a surface level song about romance.

I've seen other people comment things mentioned in this theory, too, I just don't remember what their names were. 0:08 plane flies off as they watch. Symbolizing other people’s careers taking off, while they’re talking/thinking about what’s already happened. 0:21 She’s reaching for the bottle: she’s thinking about them and what they’ve done again? 0:25 Dan throws his phone out of the window, so he can’t communicate with anybody else but her. Meaning he died and she’s the only one who ‘talks’ to him, because she still thinks about him and what they’ve done. 0:31lightning, perhaps symbolizing his death (or a storm he could have died in in Bad Blood). 0:34 they enter through a door above which it says ‘exit’, as if they (or only Dan) have already ‘exited’ life and are now coming back to reflect on it. 0:37 While she dances and is seen by the people in the bar, Dan stays in a dark corner on his own. This could symbolize his death: people see her but not him. Also, she wears a wig, hiding her real hair and thus a part of herself. This could be a symbol for her hiding that she’s still thinking about Dan. 0:36 also, on the sign it says ‘Lite’, as in ‘light’, as in ‘heaven. That one’s a stretch. 0:52 He nicks a car. If he already knew he’d die, he wouldn’t care about getting into trouble for stealing. 1:00 There’s a red car on the roof, perhaps symbolizing a car crash in which he could have died (only Dan seems to notice it). Also, it reminds me of the red car in Donnie Darko, a movie Dan has said he’s seen (and loved), perhaps intentional, probably not.1:05 It shows the speed limit, because he’s died in a car crash? Also, there are mountains in the background, reminding me of Good Grief, which is about, well, grief. Maybe this symbolizes that he is going to die? 1:12: she says he ran into a lake with his clothes on. A reference to the Bad Blood video? Afterwards you can see that she didn’t jump with him, another Bad Blood reference? 1:27 She’s wearing yellow and blue clothing while she’s alone. This could represent fear, sadness, loneliness… 1:31 the first person they see outside of the car, who’s acting weird (dancing). I feel like this (together with the other people and the burning sign later in the video) could represent (political) shifts and changes that they ignore because they’re too busy having fun. Besides, she seems to notice it, but Dan doesn’t (because he’s dead?) 1:40 there’s the WWCOMS. Sign. It’s shown burning. Symbolizing people losing their faith in politicians and the media? Also, another red car. 1:48 the goths could be a reference to Flaws and the dog a reference to Laura Palmer. The girl’s wearing a hat saying ‘so goth I’m dead’ Dan seems to be the only one to notice them/react to them. He seems to be asking directions, as if they’re already dead and he soon will be, too. 2:00 reference to Oblivion? (probabely not, it just reminded me of it) 2:08 same wig, same dancing. Dan’s watching her from the dark, as if to say that thought he’s dead, he’s still ‘with her’.2:24 The old guy with the gun might represent death and they’re running from him. She’s pulling him with her, as if he’s already dead, but she doesn’t want to accept it or is in a way taking him back from death by thinking about him.2:29 another person outside (with a sign) 2:38 She wants to dance, he doesn’t (because he’s dead, or just because he’s too awkward?)2:54 ‘you slept through all the good bits’ because he’s dead, can sort of ‘watch over her’ when she sleeps (kinda creepy)?2:59 He doesn’t seem to notice the sign but she does. Nonetheless they keep driving, symbolizing them ignoring what’s going on around them (politically). Also, another red car.3:11 now they’re dancing together and she’s wearing the pink wig, as if to say that no matter what happens, she keeps thinking about him3:12 she’s sad because of his death, thinking about him (looking at the camera) is the only thing that can cheer her up3:45 reminds me of Good Grief 3:52 more lightning, symbolizing his death?3:57 just find it funny that first he says the wig’s (yellow) blonde and she says it’s pink now with the sky the same thing happens.4:05 the mountain might symbolize a struggle: they’re able to overcome it, but almost immediately another problem surfaces (his death?)4;23 another red, wrecked car 4:24 more lightning4:27 and yet another person acting weird 4:40 she’s sad about his death? Also, on Instagram there’s a picture of Dan alone on the car (because he’s dead?) I think I might have spent too much time on this

The color 'Red' in terms of color symbolism doesn't actually mean death. It can mean danger more so. Also since Dan has South African roots, 'Red' can very well represent 'Mourning'. But if you're looking at that color's symbolism overall the color 'Red' is a more positive, vibrant color.

Brittney Williams [The Reclusive Blogger] You are probably right (I don't know much about this subject) , but I was referring to the film 'Donnie Darko'. In this film (spoiler alert) Gretchen gets hit by a red car and dies. Because I really love this movie, the car reminded me of that moment and thus I associated the red cars in the video with death. However, this is obviously just a theory, so I'm not claiming to be right and the colour red not symbolising 'death' but 'danger' does make a lot of sense.

about 10 years ago my dad had taken me and my siblings to the airport to go pick up my mom who was coming back from a trip. we had left early so we waited in the parking lot for a while and were just watching the planes waiting for hers to land, and i remember sitting in the front seat listening to Bastille while we were there and just loving every second of it. something about being there and listening to their music just felt perfect, and i remember thinking to myself that someday i wanted to go back there and do the same thing, just sit there watching the planes and listening to music. and then a few years later they released this video and all of those memories came flooding back…. this song was really special to me for a while because of a person i don’t talk to anymore, and this was always something we talked about doing. even after our relationship ended and we were just friends she promised me we would still do it someday. i don’t know that it’ll ever happen, but i at least hope that person is doing well and knows how much of a positive impact they had on my life. even if the way our friendship ended was shitty and a lot of drama within our friend group got in the way of things, something that will never change is how important those conversations were to me at the time. i was terrified of the future but thinking about doing this again someday, possibly with her, really kept me going for a while. so much in my life has changed since then and i’m happy with how far i’ve come but that’s still a memory i hold onto thanks to this song and this band❤️

It's not a death omen, at least not for Dan or Bastille- it's actually the logo for 'Wild World Communications' (WWCOMMS). the fictitious, manipulative multimedia coorperation that in their videos, most predominantly the one for 'Fake it', represents modern media and the controlling Bougousize. Buring it is not a symbol of Bastille's demise- oh no, a symbol of them demolishing these huge media cooperations.
@erynnegriffin52197 жыл бұрын
I've actually noticed that the three-triangle symbol of theirs greatly resembles the Norse Valknut, the symbol of a gory death (usually god-pleasing).

Guys what if Good Grief is actually just a story from Dan's childhood that he tells to her but he says it differently every time that's why it gets so weird and everything is all mixed😱 the music video I mean
@mairitkrabbi29897 жыл бұрын
I like your theory 👌🏻
@jolienstuer27 жыл бұрын
Isn't good grief about someone who died and the process of trying to live with it, handle it? Well, we all think differently, see things differently and remember things differently, just as they wanted to point out in this video. So we all have our own thoughts and interpretations about things. But good thinking skills though!
@tashabeardmore7 жыл бұрын
Jolien Stuer yeah that's what I thought too

I think the girl in the video is going to die. At 4:23 when the girl is driving, we can see the same red car that is on top of the building is now wrecked and looks like it has been in the car crash. At 3.00, when Dan drove past the 'Looking up for Heaven" the girl sticks her head outside from the car to get a better view of it. The 'Good Grief ' video also linked to this video. Good Grief is about missing somebody who is dead and i think that's why Good Grief is so freakish. Good Grief vid might be about Dan trying to let go of the girl in this video. This is one of my theories. My probably the video means nothing at all. But when the WWCOMS logo burned, i think that must indicates something.
@PoeticEspionage7 жыл бұрын
najwa aaliya I really like this theory as well.
@najwafarihaaaliyamohamadra99427 жыл бұрын
PoeticEspionage Thank you. What do you think about the vid?
@JMunny7 жыл бұрын
I think she commits suicide. Her looking at the heaven sign could mean she wants to go to heaven and leave it all behind. This also explains the fact that he saw a yellow wig instead of pink and a yellow sky instead of a pink one, because he can't see things from her perspective. He doesn't know how bad her life is. I think Good Grief ties in because he blames it all on himself, "Every stumble and each misfire, I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more" could mean that this brought on a low self esteem situation, where every mistake he makes just reminds him of her death, how he could have saved her. Also, her doing all those risky things could be her doing her bucket list before she kills herself. Also, at 3:15, he says "Leave us behind" as the camera does a close up shot on her face. And at 4:48, he says "I like my version better" which could mean that he wishes she didn't live such a terrible life.

I think of this as meaning that we’re always looking for the great things in life “looking up for heaven” and “waiting to be buried” that we don’t appreciate the smaller things in life but when he’s “lying in the dirt” with this person he’s no longer looking for those great things because the greatest thing of all is right there with him.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a happy/positive song? Is it because I never watch the video? I think it's about how life seems small and meaningless looking at the universe, but when she took his hand, he realized she is greater than the universe and there is no looking up to heaven, because it's there with her. I also often take the looking up as a metaphor for dreaming. However it seems like the singer doesn't often believe that those dreams can come true. But dreaming also seems pointless in a way, because she is everything he needs.

Lyrics: Deep in a corner of the night We were lying in the middle of the road Counting the planes as they flew by Inconceivable imagining them go And drunk we set the world to rise As we fell and hit our heads upon the curb You make me laugh until I die Can you think of any better way to choke? Stories told to me and stories told to you And did you ever feel like they were ringing true? And all their words were glory Well they all, they sounded empty When we're looking up for heaven Looking up for heaven Way down here upon the ground When we're lying in the dark There's no looking up for heaven Looking up for heaven Not everything had gone to plan But we made the best of what we had, you know Passing the drink from hand to hand We admit we really know nothing at all Stories told to me and stories told to you And was it feeling real, and they were ringing true? And all their words were glory Well they all, they sounded empty When we're looking up for heaven Looking up for heaven Way down here upon the ground When we're lying in the dark There's no looking up for heaven Looking up for heaven I'll take my chances on the curb here with you We watched the planes leave us behind On the curb here with you We watched the planes leave us behind And, and then you put your hand in mine And pulled me back from things divine Stop looking up for heaven, waiting to be buried And all their words were glory Well they all, they sounded empty When we're looking up for heaven Looking up for heaven And way down here upon the ground When we're lying in the dark There's no looking up for heaven Looking up for heaven
