A walnut bat house. That is such beautiful overkill! Thanks for the video, I love it! That bat motif is definitely something I would want to copy!

Definitely the most creative/beautiful design I've seen so far and expertly finished - well done Alfred! Mine is no piece of art and I did use a very fine mesh (not recommended) instead of cutting grooves in the wood (don't have equipment). After more than a year, they now sleep over almost every day. Love watching them take off and return, but most of all love the fact that there are less mosquitos and I get free guano for the garden!

I’m from the UK. I just want to say my friend, that I love wildlife so much as I can see you do. Wish you was in uk to give me the confidence of what you have achieved and build one for myself. My next project is a bat house, and people can over complicate things like you’ve shown, but if there’s a job worth doing, then do it once and do it properly, as my father taught me. You’re very inspiring, and thank you for a masterclass of wood working. 👍

Do you have the plans? I wouldn't mind making this. I'd like to use a timber more suited for outside, but I doubt it will look as good as yours does in walnut. Just a shame walnut isn't great outside. I know you only used what you had, and it looks unbelievable,it really does. The bat motif is brilliant. Bravo

Looks amazing, however a major flaw in there is that the entrance is too big/wide for bats, bat houses should have a very narrow entrance otherwise it leaves them vulnerable to predators. Not sure if you got any bats there, as they are very picky about their house, specifically where they feel safe!

Great build! Interesting to see what people thought of the isolation rules from very early on in the pandemic! We've "made it through" by spring of 2023 but people are still dying everywhere. 😢 In hindsight, those early weeks of isolation and paranoia seem ineffective.

when you cut the foothold grooves, did you just keep moving you reference board over a 1/2" with each cut to get them perfectly spaced like that? @From the Woods thanks 😊

I made three of these following his design with some modifications. I wanted a smaller interior gap of .75" and a longer landing pad. My two chamber boxes were cut from 8x12x1 boards, whose actual dimensions were 8x11.5x.75 : Back 29" Middle 22.25" Front 19.25" Sides 19.33"x2.25" And for a three chamber variant I used: Back 32" 2nd middle 24" Sides 24.5"x3.75" I stained exterior-facing wood with water-based dark walnut color, but left bat wings unstained for contrasting colors that everyone loves. I also did cedar plugs without stain for more contrasting colors. I really like how they turned out, but will be curious if they are both wide and tall enough to attract bats. You can see my boxes at Rockler.com if you look at customer photos for Rockler Portable Drill Guide with Vise.

yes, walnut is probably not the best choice for outdoor use. It's what I had on hand. But I'm sure the pattern and ideas will work with cedar as well.

Walnut will stand up to predators well. A woodpecker would tap his beak into a nub before he could get inside. Common problem with bat boxes.

If you are trying to help people or give them ideas than it's important to put in your title what state your building this for. It matters what state your in. Can't build a box for Texas and expect people in Wisconsin to copy you and kill those bats in that state.
@fromthewoodsyyc3 жыл бұрын
Well it wasn't my intent to injure or kill bats, just to have a good afternoon in the shop making something. I hope you can see it your heart to forgive me for my apparent ignorance.

@@fromthewoodsyyc I forgive you .. Lol! When we were lads, my brother and I used to go into the barn up on the hay bales at night, and bats would come in to get bugs around the drop down lights.. we'd throw empty gunny sacks up and they'd get their claws hooked in them and we'd catch them .. once we took a pair from up in the Sacramento valley to San Francisco to let them go .. poor bats, I wouldn't do it now..
