@@nightshade9293 Your attacks/ailments/elemental effects are dictated by the deck that you make. The combat is also real-time and the timer for when your characters can act depend on the card/cards you play. The combat comes from having a good amount of attacking cards that combo with each other or having an element card that can change the element of your weapons to be effective against specific types of enemies, think Pokemon. There are lvl 1, 2, 3 cards which can be played by themselves, but the real damage is when you combo those cards with each other or finish a combo with a special move card. You have a short but generous enough timer to play cards in succession. The feeling of selecting cards for combos is a great feeling. There's so much more stuff about the deck gameplay but if you're gonna look at stuff about it, it's probably better to look it up yourself because I would be writing several paragraphs that could have been resolved with one google search. Sorry if the whole paragraph of unneeded information is too much, I loved Baten Kaitos:Origins and am happy it's being remastered and it's combat is definitely praiseworthy.

@@nightshade9293 They both have very different systems, and I haven't played that much of the first one, but in Origins you have a hand of cards where attack cards have different values (1-6 iirc) and items are stand alone. During your turn you can either play an item, discard any number of cards or play an attack. When you play an attack a countdown of a few seconds appears and you can continue to play attacks as long as they have a higher value than the last on you played (and 4-6 value cards cost another resource you build up through the battle), and whenever you play or discard a card you immediately draw a new one, so the idea is to balance your deck and shape your hand in such a way that you have access to the items you need often enough without them clogging your hand, while managing to play as long combo strings as possible each turn. I found it so addicting that I got stuck grinding in the colosseum for so long that I lost track of what was going on in the story

I'm happy you liked it, we all have those classics close to our heart with their own quirks, mine is Shadow hearts Covenant, amazing PS2 RPG and even though its my fav can see its flaws and aging. The bad dub, it was more of a widely recognized thing back in early 2000's, it was unique cause they tried to do a sound effect for the player being this divine being but it kind of ended up sounding like they were talking into cans, its was a cool idea and a unique charm but it may not have have turned out to be ...hmm the best desired effect?

@@Optim121 Well, the majority have to rely on the remasters for certain games because the originals are too expensive and the money doesn't go to the publisher/developer and others can't/won't play them via emulators because their PC might not be powerful enough or don't know how to set them up.

Yep! Putting items into cards which then change over time, like unripe bananas to ripe bananas then rotten bananas. All of those cards do different things. It's so cool! And then it even encourages you to take pictures of enemies for cash and the lighting effects of attacks makes a difference on the quality of picture. It's just nuts and so enjoyable.

Was just saying a lot of people don’t want to mess with emulation as it does involve with tinkering around in the settings and some games are buggy regardless of how powerful your PC is, like with Xenia or Xemu, for example. I've only played Baiten Kaitos 2 as a kid, but man did I love it! It was my first foray into the card-based battle system; either that or Kingdom Heart: Chain of Memories. But I remember this more because of how intricate the deck-building strategy was. A perfect balance between strength, combos, and basic support in order to win battles. Never beat the game; but only because my kid self prioritized strength and just barely survived the late-game bosses. Now as an adult, I'm ready to try again but with a more strategic mindset!

I really want to get this game and play these two again, especially with the new game plus mode. However, I hope they make a patch for the english dub to at least be optional, maybe cleaned up a pinch for the first game. And to make physical copies for the united states, I love the games, so I hope this is taken into consideration by bandai namco-tricrescendo and monolith soft. If you haven't played these games you should. Collecting cards is really fun, the battle system is great, it has a great story and it takes a long time to complete. The first game can be a tiny bit slow, it's fixed in the second game.

Glad these games got re-released, but having no English dub (besides the 1st English dub of the intro movie to BK1 that was in the Japanese original) and a revised script that reduces alcohol references sucks. Still, the games are definitely worth checking out, and I'm glad that they've been ported to the Switch. It does feel kinda cheap, however, which does make sense as Bamco did contract this port out to a freelance studio. Glad to have imported a physical copy of the game to go with my GameCube originals, however! I hope there will be another new title in the future. The GameCube had a ton of gems that deserve new sequels.

Seeing all these comments that talk about how bad the English dub is tells me that barely anyone must have played Baten Kaitos Origins, or perhaps are conflating the quality of the dubs between the two games. In any case, the level of difference in dub quality between Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean and Origins is night and day. It just ticks me off when people who wish for the return of English dub in this HD remaster release are given terrible responses about the English dub being bad anyways when Origins simply shows that is not the case. Heck, as mediocre as the English dub is in Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean I'm going to miss hearing Xelha's prayers, Kalas's "Cheeseburgers," and many other memorable moments (for probably the wrong reasons). Personally, the lack of an English dub is a huge loss and has made me hesitant to buy this HD remaster even against my own wishes to support the Baten Kaitos series.

Baten Kaitos is literally my favorite RPG’s. Sadly we’ll never hear “LOOK AT MY BEAUTIFUL WINGS” or Gibari’s “HARDER” on modern consoles. The really weird part is they got a whole different English cast to voice the new opening for Eternal Wings but said screw it and left the rest undubed. I was really excited when it was announced and when I realized there not adding the dub for some reason I was really turned off. Yes Eternal Wings VA is cringe at times but those who actually played it came to love it and everyone agrees origins had some of the best VA for an RPG. Not only does the new UI look like generic dogshit now the performance is really inconsistent and stutters as well. Why can’t a company just port their games without F’ing with the source material 🤦‍♂️. God bless emulation.

Check out the E3 2004 trailer. The opening cutscene for the Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean HD remaster is actually what the Japanese version of BK1 had. Meaning there were two different English dubbed openings for BK1 back then. That being said, yeah the UI looks cheap and the performance is just disappointing. The original games had some noticeable frame drops in battle, but it's particularly bad when a REMASTER can't even run stably. Healthbar heal numbers are done in an instant instead of the more satisfying gradual roll, the menus look plain, flat, and lifeless in comparison to the beautiful designs of the originals, and WHY?! Why, why, why are they using such an obnoxious mouse clicking sound effect when navigating through the menus?!
