What I never understood is why a grown woman lived with her father for so long while also trying to hide such a monumental secret. It seems it would be in her best interest to get a place of her own early on so her dad would be less likely to find out. After all it's hard to keep secrets from people you live with.

But... she was 17 or so in this comic (as far as I remember). Hardly a grown woman, in my opinion. And, to be fair, she was 19 when The Killer Joke took place. In a way, she was still a kid. A teenager.

Bit late here, but bear in mind Barbara becomes one of the most mature characters in the DCU. If you think about it, a lot of teenage girls complain about things- I didn't see as much complaining here as I have done with real girls. Also, nobody seems to lose their shit when Red Hood, Huntress, Punisher etc kill their opponents, but when Batwoman wants to it's seen as wrong? Batwoman is essentially Huntress but a lesbian. That whole repeal happened in 2011, but this second Batwoman was introduced in 2006, so it's a perfectly viable element in her origin. She was inspired to become Batwoman when she took down a mugger and saw Batman, so it wasn't even that important to the character of Barwoman as opposed to Kane.

But funny thing is the first Batgirl having a ongoing comic book was Cassandra Cain in 2000. This Batgirl Year one is from 2003.
