Very useful video. Thanks for taking the time to film and post. I was about to go out and buy a similar panel to replace a plastic moulded one, when I thought ‘ I bet it’s not going to be a quick afternoon job...I’ll have a quick look on YT’ So, now I have to build a frame...I already have the end battens, but the rest needs building up. The end result looks great, just more work than I first envisaged. That was a brave move cutting the glass. I was waiting for the crack to appear, followed by much swearing 🤨 Thanks again...most helpful.

Thanks for watching and your kind remarks Harry. Yes, I hadn't planned for cutting glass but luckily got away with it this time. Thank you for this b33. I am fitting a Halite (15mm aerated plastic) panel and I have realised that jamming the panel all the way up under the bath is wrong. A person lifting him or herself out of the bath could cause the bath to flex which would mean the bath panel taking the weight and putting strain on the screws which hold the plinth to the main panel. I will trim 5mm off the top. I noticed the spare tiles stored under the bath. I wish that some helpful person had done that for me. I have a bump in the floor which will be allowed for by trimming the plinth using the old panel as a template. I chose a Halite panel because if it gets wet it should not degrade. Thanks again. Great video.
@b33zo2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Julian. I haven't seen the Halite panels - until now. Not exactly cheap but should easily outlast the MDF panels. They don't make it clear whether the plinth is part of the molding or comes separately. I wonder how the edges will look after sawing. You might have seen my other bath panel video where I cut up a PVC shower panel to make a presentable bath panel. Side, end and trims cost around £60 total. Good luck with your project. b33zo

Very helpful video 👍 I have got this job on the horizon 😇 , and with no instructions provided I could see a few challenges ahead and you highlighted these in your video. I’m thinking of just securing the plinth first with screws fairly high up and then your left with just offering the main panel up which will then hide them and just secure main panel at both ends with screws and cover caps., think this way will eliminate it being a tight fit to get it under the lip of the bath. In my mind I just think there’s no need to secure plinth to the main panel or is my thought process wrong? Great vid 👍
@b33zo Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching David. Yes an interesting option. It's been a while since I did that job but from memory I guess if the plinth is generous enough you could rebate it into the frame like I did and fix with pins/screws (near the top edge) which would be covered when you add the main panel. I'm not keen on seeing screw caps on the facing panel but others have suggested a hidden clip-on system (just read through the comments) which sounds a much nicer option. Good luck with your project. b33zo

Pretty decent job. Did one similar, but i did not have the luxury of space above the panel. Measured the panel and plinth, then was faced with the panel becoming wedged before it was vertical. Applied pressure with my foot, and after several kicks the plinth and panel were vertical.

Hi Lewis thanks for watching. Yes, i'f I'd know about Button-fix I would have definitely used them! Looks like a great invention and okay for DIYers like me. @Lewishamphil7 жыл бұрын
Hi b33zo; you're right, who has a sucker pad?! In practice, I use an old spatula which easily disengages one of the Fixes, so I can get my fingers underneath.
@DavidSandilands4 жыл бұрын
@@b33zo If you have a recessed section , due to having a 2 section panel like you have in the video, surely you would have enough grip by pulling on the bottom of the top section, so negating the requirement for suction pads.

@@DavidSandilands Hi David thanks for watching. Yes, that's way I did it. Wearing latex gloves helps with getting a good grip on the shiny stuff. I ended up buying some suction pads off ebay to pull the front off my big iMac (video) so now have them handy for the next bath panel! Cheers beezo.

@b33zo2 жыл бұрын
Hi Charis thanks for watching. Yes, I would always position a bath panel up under the edge of the bath (call me old-fashioned..) and especially so with MDF. These thicker panels (19mm) don't really need much support if you cut it to fit tight. Good luck. b33zo

@b33zo5 жыл бұрын
@@gingerninja7187 No idea on flush or under. I've always fitted under being old school from the days of very thin panels (plastic and hardboard). I feel that fitted under forms a drip rather than flush which might allow splashes to run behind the panel. Hi Fae Thanks for watching. Sorry to read that you feel fitting this kind of panel would be too big a task. Glass cutters cost only £2.99 at screwfix so that's not really a problem. Successfully joining the plinth to the panel required some figuring out but only a couple of cheap clamps as far as tools go. Walls and floors that are out of level are probably the main challenge. Perhaps you could get a cheap piece of hardboard/plywood, fit that then use it as a template for cutting your shiny new panel. Never give up!

Hi Audiostud thanks for watching. Yes I sealed the cut end with two coats of undercoat paint and surprise surprise, because I had cut the panel so tight in the first place the thickness of the paint meant it only just went back in..Good luck with your project!

Personally should have put tile backer board straight onto the frame u made then just stick ur matching tiles to it
@b33zo Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching wahid. Yes that would be another option. Backer board, adhesive, tiles (+cuts) and grouting. Would probably last longer than the MDF panel. More recently I made a bath panel out of a decorative UPVC sheet which looked okay. See my video 'how to make your own bath panel'. cheers b33zo

Not good if the floor is not true hence this is reason why he is using a panel with an adjustable plinth.

Did you really leave that bag of grout under the bath????
@b33zo6 жыл бұрын
haha g man no but I left the tiles under there - a little surprise for whoever inevitably rips the whole lot out!
@oldproji7 жыл бұрын
You could have tried heavy duty Velcro to anchor the frame uprights.
@b33zo7 жыл бұрын
Thanks oldproji yes that's a good idea. I guess the self adhesive type would stick well to the wall tiles.

@@b33zo Just drill through the tiles and fix them properly. A little silicon in the holes after job done and you can fix the panel straight away

You should paint the cut raw edges with a couple of coats of oil based gloss or PVA glue just to prevent any moisture penetrating into the MDF, that stuffs like a sponge. Very informative demonstration otherwise.
@b33zo3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Paul. Yes, believe it or not I did that - twice! First time because I had cut the panel so tight, with the paint on it wouldn't go in. I sanded that back and did a coat of PVA the second time - but forgot to film it. Agreed I'm not really a fan of MDF in potentially wet areas. ATB b33zo

Don't forget that PVA isn't actually waterproof even though it looks glossy when dry

The plinth design complicates and makes the job much harder. If the panel was just one piece all you would need to do is trim the top if it was too high.
@b33zo2 ай бұрын
rindz_os Retty thanks for watching. A correct observation. I guess the idea was that the plinth could be trimmed to uneven floors before it was fixed to the main panel. Maybe they figured that if the plinth was ruined by water splashes it could be cheaply replaced... ATB b33zo

We have one of these type of bath panels and I put it in the loft for 2-years because it's a ridiculous "design". After watching this, I think I might have a go at fitting it. Expect cursing 🤣
@b33zo3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching Simon. This was a while ago but from memory the 'instructions' were confusing. Think they applied to multiple products..Having the separate plinth is handy in that you can adjust it to uneven or out of level floors but it fitting it is half the work! Go slowly and good luck. b33zo

@@b33zo I completed the job by screwing the lower panel my constructed frame, using angle brackets. Finally I suspended the upper panel on 3 'L' shaped brackets attached to the front of the lower panel and it just pushes into place snuggly. Thanks again!
@b33zo3 ай бұрын
@@simonminnican Thanks again Simon. A simple solution. I'm guessing your lower brackets attached to the front of the lower panel (plinth) can't be seen from a standing position. Job done. b33zo
