The Return...... Best Black Metal album ever

Bathory were (and still are) one of my favourite HM 'bands', the only thing is that the Bathory oeuvre divides the fans in two factions (Black Metal/Thrash Metal on one hand and Epic Viking Metal on the other). This makes a review more difficult in general and for those who like both musical directions in particular. The latter goes for me also. Some brief comments on the albums may give a clue to my ranking which gets started with the 'assbomb' and ends up with my three favourite Bathory albums. #12 Octagon (the ASSBOMB) Another desperate attempt made by Thomas 'Quorthon' Forsberg to surpass Slayer concerning speed and aggression. However, the songs are bad, the sound is worse (that of the drums in particular) - this doesn't work at all! WORST F...... BATHORY ALBUM EVER!!! #11 Requiem Almost the same goes for Requiem were it not for the better sound and songs like 'War Machine' #10 Blood Fire Death For those who are disappointed with my ranking it #10 it must be stated that BFD consists of both quite bad (Pace 'til Death, Holocaust, Dies Irae - Speed kills but who's dying?) and good stuff (the remaining traxx). BFD remains as a transition album 'a mixed bag', hence the quite low ranking. # 9 Blood on Ice Recorded already in 1989, Quorthon held its release seven years back without a re-work.Yesterday's Rain. # 8 The Return... I'm sure you disagree again... This genuine Black Metal album consists of many good songs ('Total Destruction', 'Bestial Lust', 'Reap of Evil', 'Sadist', Born for Burning'), but its production suffered very much from technical damages during the recording process which can be heard in most songs. This major objection apart, I still prefer the version of 'the track 'The Return of the Darkness and Evil' which had been released on the sampler 'Scandinavian Metal Attack' earlier. # 7 Nordland II Quite a remake of Nordland I - no more, no less. # 6 Nordland I Epic! # 5 Destroyer of Worlds 'What, another 0-8-15 Thrash Metal album?' was my first thought after a look at the album cover. Hence I'd been reluctant first to listen to it, but Quorthon proved me wrong. Ünlike BFD, Destroyer of Worlds is persuasive enough to reconcile both factions of the Bathory fan community. # 4 Bathory One of the most influential Black Metal albums - with some Thrash Metal elements thrown in, very much like the early Venom albums. No real weak song on the Bathory debut album, but the version of 'Sacrifice' seem too fast and is stumbling (as to me, its Scandinavian Metal Attack version is better). # 3 Twilight of the Gods My favourite album in 1991 - sometimes with some Wagneresque pathos, but roughness, in turn, is missing. Far beyond Good and Evil. # 2 Under the Sign of the Black Mark Unlike 'The Return...' no pure BM album. Much better produced, UtSotBM is the absolute highlight of the first Bathory period (albums 1 to 3). Just listen to traxx 1 - 4, 6, 8. . # 1 HAMMERHEART 1. This album opened up the gates to a new genre entitled Viking Metal. 2. Its sound is massive, quite thick and maintains an amount of rawness well known from earlier material, or, it's not overproduced. 3. There is neither 'filler' to be heard nor do the songs sound like each other. 4. And even the Antichristian attitude hasn't entirely disappeared (just read the lyrics of 'One rode to Asa Bay').

For me, Hammerheart just has to be #1. Such a well executed and unique concept, one of my best albums. Shores in Flames has to be one of the best album intros ever.

I'm just getting into Bathory. I've only heard Under the Sign of the Black Mark and Blood Fire Death so far. Both albums are masterpieces, and I can't decide which one is better as of now. Can't wait to listen to the rest of their discography.

I found out about Bathory cause of Grand Theft Auto IV The Lost and Damned. "Call From The Grave" was featured on the Liberty City Hardcore. (Bathory aren't hardcore at all. Shows how much Rockstar knows about metal.) I realized that the song was absolutely amazing. 💯

Very difficul question but for me: "Under the sign of the black mark" is the album that gives me shiver everytime i listen to it!!!!! The vocal on the album are just insane Quorthon in just brutal screaming like nothin you can hear elsewhere And it has the vibe of the first two albums but with more kick ass songs and quality!!!!! Less favourite: "Requiem" this is because he is trying to do something other bands did 10000000 times better and i give credit to trying but it is not Quorthon at its best for sure!!!!! Nice video mate!!!!

I have to say Hammerheart is my favorite, it was my first one of theirs and the cover art is as epic as the songs. Close behind though is Blood Fire Death, the mixture of the styles is fantastic and every song is awesome. I understand why it's your favorite. I like the early stuff too, but when Requiem and then Octagon were released I was disappointed by both.

Toss up. Blood Fire Death is the capstone of Bathory's contribution to Black Metal and a fitting farewell to a genre they had given full breath to. Ironically, also a perfect segue into their next album, Hammerheart, which I consider a brilliant supernova in "Viking" metal. If I'd choose one, it's Hammerheart, if only for it's homebaked melodic lyrics that tie sweeping aural vistas together with meloncholy.

Also, I actually agree with your list for me 🩸 🔥 ☠️ is number two. It’s actually the first Bathory album I bought and I hold it dear to my heart. Then when I bought Under the Sign… I was blown away. I feel like the Black Metal Quorthon did matured the best in this album. Again, glad I found your vids and looking forward to more! Cheers Brother!

Totally agreed about Blood Fire Death being number 1,what an album! If their black metal stuff is Quorthon playing in a dark cave,then Blood Fire Death is him crawling out and blasting his music out on a field full of snow. The sound is still raw,but the mix has more openness to it,more room for instruments to breath. Just listen to those solos on Golden Walls Of Heaven,they wouldn't have been as epic as they are with mix of the debut for example. Love all the songs here, masterpiece. I personally see The Return as you see Blood Fire Death-taking parts of debut and Black Mark and mixing them together amazingly. Again,love the mix of it,the guitars are crunchy as all hell and more pronounced than on both debut and thrashier songs on Black Mark. While songs aren't all winners,as a whole I definitely prefer it to the debut and on some days,when I feel especially blasphemous,I can even prefer it to Under The Sign Of The Black Mark. Overall,great list. I personally love Nordland II and The Return more than you do,but it's what opinions are for)

My ranking 12. Octagon (I actually like this album but maybe that's cause thrash and black metal are on par for me. Some of the songs feel slightly off beat but other than that fairly innocent) 11. Norland II (great but it really does feel like a last album if that makes sense. It just doesn't have the punch the early stuff does. I do like the mix of the thrashy and more viking stuff tho) 10. Norland I (basically the same as the sequal. Ring of gold is my favourite bathory song by bathory tho) 9. Destroyer of worlds (Again very good as this is one of my favourite bands of all time. It's just like those 2 not as memorable as the early viking stuff. I fucking love ode tho) 8. Requiem (a way better octagon basically) 7. Blood on ice (Everything I want from bathory. But the others are so good it puts this at 7) 6. The return 5. Blood fire death 4. Under the sign of a black mark 3. Bathory (Fun, fast, abrasive. Everything black metal was at the time and it's a classic) 2. Hammerheart (Very nearly 1. Father to son is one of my favourite songs of all time. Rest is amazing of course) 1. Twilight of the gods (This album has always clicked for me and I dunno why. Masterpiece) The ones I didn't say anything about could change anytime

I'm with Quest here. The two top albums stand above the rest. Blood Fire Death is one of my favorite albums regardless of genre. Under the Sign... is a seminal and evil album which I also adore. The debut is awesome as well but just a notch below.

I honestly don't think that Octagon is bad, certainly not as bad as to be disliked. Of course it's flawed and very raw sounding, but it has a certain charm to it and in my opinion is really underappreciated.

As much as I love black metal in general, I find myself preferring Bathory's later viking metal albums more. That said, and it pains me to say this but... despite many many attempts to really like Bathory's music on par with its reputation... I kind of don't. I've listened to the S/T, Return, Blood Fire Death, Under the Sign... sure there's some cool songs, but it's almost like I appreciate them more because of how much they influenced bands I truly like than the songs in and of themselves. I certainly almost never find myself wanting to listen to those albums, like, at all. And if I do force myself to, I'll stop listening pretty quickly. I don't know why, but I've always found Bathory pretty overrated, except for a few of the viking metal moments which are good.

I've watched around 10 KZbin Bathory rankings and you all seem to say the same about The Return lol. You all rank it in the middle or so and act like it's some crazy opinion and that fans think its the best. I'm pretty sure that has never been the case. It's the 9th lowest rating on Metalstorm. I'd say most say Blood Fire Death or Under The Sign Of The Black Mark is the best. Occasionally I see people say Hammerheart or Bathory. But honestly never The Return.
