Holy cow that was a LOT of supplies from the Brico Depot!! Love that the Brico Depot were included in a ditty...lol. We have the Home Depot here in Canada....Brico seems the same. Yes, Winters are not for everyone, and having spent a great deal of time in the tropical climes, it would be more difficult indeed. Loved witnessing your delight on finding out that the shower tray is a good system...real time enthusiasm. Properly installed insulation will regulate the inner temperature and prevent great temperature fluctuations, especially when the house is closed up & unoccupied in winter, which will cause an increase in the level of humidity. Insulation would prevent condensation and moisture from appearing, which is a perfect environments for mould growth. Put between the beams you would still see all the structure of the roof, and it would help to lighten the space as the painted drywall would reflect light. But you do you, it’s your home and you taste. Here in UK it would affect the energy rating of your home , which has to be declared at sale and if any of the building work required planning permission it would be a requirement of getting the work passed by building control. 👍🏼

No drywall in this house. There’s an energy rating here as well but with an old cottage like house as this it’s not worthwhile trying to get a rating.

Awesome Brico Depot rap!! Castorama must be wishing they were closer by to you. Leroy Merlin was my personal favorite, last time I was in France. If there's one nearby they might save you some Euros next time you're buying a lot of stuff .

If it ever becomes necessary to insulate the ceiling/roof, would it be possible to do it on top of the roof boards that are there now, insulate, put the tiles back on top of the insulation?

Yes. That would be a big job but insulating on the outside would be ideal.

A friend just used cork to insulate his roof…..it was pretty thin for between the beams.

What's the R value for cork? I think that's quite an expensive option for insulating roofs (or anything else).

Cork is also heavy in weight relative alternatives. Anyway the issue will still be that you won’t see the planking with insulation installed between the rafters.

Is it too late to mention an idea that is new to me ? Put the shower controls opposite/away from the shower head , so you can reach in to turn on the water before you get hit by the first cold spray ? 🥰

Burning wood fast typically means a major loss of heat. That's also not the greatest thing for the environment :D If interested, maybe you can look into rocket mass heaters. They are designed for a high temperature complete but SLOW burn.

Yeah, I’ve been looking into many designs. Soapstone, Rocket mass, masonry etc. The issue is that our house is to small for these types of stoves. One day I’ll build an earthship and that’ll have the rocket mass stove for sure. (With integrated heatexchanger for underfloor heating)
