If this was in the UK it would have most likley been a high level toilet in 1955. But everything here is very American from the light switch to the toilet itself. Also I notcie the lock says 'open' or 'occupied' in the UK it would say 'vacant' or 'engaged' lol

The urinal and the bowl seemed to have weak flushes. Could be a combination of the water pressure on the 18th floor and the age of the supply plumbing. What was wrong with the bowl that said "Do not use?" Was there even water in it?

Um my school had toilet seats similar to the do not use toilet except they were yellowish white and were a hazard because of spring loaded mechanical preventing the toilet from staying completely down. So they ended up replacing the rest of those seats by the end of 2021.

@@pacfilming8117 Hundreds if of thousands of toilets use those seats, and there are no “spring loaded” mechanisms on the seats. It’s a simple hinge. The only seats that used a spring loaded mechanism were old automatic-flushing toilets that had seats attached to a pressure switch, which would flush the toilet when the user got up off the seat. What’s your reply have to do with my comment, anyway?

@Articunoboy12 If there was sewer gas seeping into the bathroom through the empty toilet, you definitely would've smelled it as soon as you walked in; sewer gas has a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide and methane compounds.....very hard to miss. With the bathroom being on an upper floor, it's possible there was enough isolation from the sewer main to prevent any kind of outgassing, or it's possible there was still a water seal in the toilet's trap, even though the bowl was empty.
