Thank you for these videos. I knew Will Beebe when I was a child, in Trinidad. We went there to visit him once a month or so as my dad was his doctor. Dad and Mother who was a nurse, were with him as he died there. What a life he lived!!! Joyce Hill.

About 1949 I sat in Beebe's Bathyscape. It was stored behind a building in the Bronx Zoo.

It actually wasn't until Beebe's and Barton's mutual friend introduced them to each-other that Beebe was accepting of the idea. Beebe had a habit of ignoring his mail, and planned on building a cylinder instead. But that doesn't mean he wasn't reasonable with other ideas. Both of them played major roles in the world; whether it be war, science, discovery, engineering, and humanity. I hope more of that character is continuously born under the human species.

I'd like to see footage of the test dives of the empty bathysphere. Water got inside and when it was lowered onto the ships deck, the high pressure water and air escaping from it forced a bolt they were loosening off with such force it gouged a piece of metal out of some other equipment followed by a jet of air & water that Beebe said would have decapitated him if he'd been in front of it! From what I read they were filming that incident.

+phillyflash43 I have seen that footage on a TV show years ago. Sorry, I can't remember the show, but looking for that video is what brought me here today. They lift the unmanned bathysphere onto the deck and one of the view ports is leaking and spraying a small amount of water. They use a sledgehammer or axe to shear the bolts of the port and an approximately 8 inch column of water shoots out for 10 to 15 seconds, maybe more. I still search the internet occasionally looking for that video. If you find it, PLEASE post a reply with a link here. I will do the same.

I too remember that amazing blast of water that was discharged from the sphere. On this clip above they have edited out that scene. You can see as he is loosening the plug, water is coming out. In the next few seconds the film cuts to lowering the sphere into the ocean. This is out of sequence. -- I did find the partial video that shows the blast, but I have since lost it. I am sure National Geographic has the film, but finding it there has been a fruitless task. - If it shows up again, I will try to post it here.

That footage was included in the National Geographic presentation "The Explorers: A Century of Discovery (1988)", and you can find it right here in KZbin, (watch?v=0cvB19mk-k0). The segment about Beebe and Barton starts some 20 seconds after the 22 minute mark and shows the opening of the inundated sphere. Hope this was helpful!

Thanks punkiller666! You found it! That's exactly it. But I will add that the original telecast must have been much earlier than 1988. I seem to remember about 1967 or so... I think someone mentioned the first airing. But I am not sure. -- Thanks again for finding this!

Cool video but one correction, in 3:40 you said no human would go that deep until the 60's but Otis Barton, the same guy who made the Bathysphere further broke the deepest dive record solo in 1949. He dove down to 4500 feet below sea level in the Benthoscope which was a submersible similar to the Bathysphere. Still it was a very cool video, if I'm ever in New York I'll stop by the aquarium.

It sucks when bozos like this use the beauty of nature and conservation as a guise to promote their watery prisons and paint it as if they are helping animals by promoting their business A true conservationist like Steve Irwin would never use the appeal of a "big shiny building" as a reason to go to his zoo he would put the money thats makes it all shiny into making the animals lives better... absolutely despicable

This is a HUGE exhibit, the animals have plenty of room and are safer than they would be in the ocean. The main point of this is for people to see in real life the wonders that are below the ocean!!! Photos and video are just not the same. THIS will cause people to help save the endangered animals!
