It was. During the Death of the Family arc, The Joker is hopelessly in love with Batman, but Batman choses his family, which "breaks" the Joker heart, then Endgame was the revenge arc (I suppose?) where Joker, heartbroken and angry, he decides to end the heartache, Batman. Then in the end, Batman understoods the joke. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo did say that they did intend it to be romantic-ish ❤

Brian Zeidan I don't think it's real, like the other person mentioned, because Batman made a point that if Joker really was Pale Man and had the healing stuff in his spine, then joker wouldn't need the pit and he'd heal on his own. But it appears that, since the Joker was panicking and was trying to frantically make it to the pit, he was lying and he had none of the healing stuff in his spine and needed the pool to live. -Edit: Actually, someone else made a good point in the comments that since his spine was broken, the dionesium leaked out and he needed the pool to live, which is why he was panicking and desperately crawling to the pool. But I'm willing to bet that it was a ruse from the joker; if not, however, it explains why he's so insane, being alive for centuries and all.

I find the Joker harder to take when they write him as an actual Mass Murderer. It comes across as silly that nobody has killed him yet, and essentially irresponsible of Batman not to kill him. It's like when someone in a comic book universe, like tony Stark, has something in his lab like a flying chair that would fully change the entire way society exists. It kind of breaks the universe. Why wouldn't everyone have them? Why does that same technology not translate to every corner of society? In the case of the JOker, if he really is an escaped mass murderer, why isn't EVERYONE on a daily manhunt to find him? How could anyone sleep at night until he is dead?
