The scene where Selena whips the mannequins heads off in the Store are genuine. Michelle spent days/weeks with a Whip expert/tuitor to learn how to master the thing. The whole scene was shot in one shot and it was 100% her, no practical/special effects.

I adore Selina’s transformation scene. All of the objects she destroys are childish in nature-stuffed animals, a doll house, a kitten T-shirt, objects that reflect a character who lacks power and agency in her own life, someone dependent. And by the end, she’s overtly adult and willing to ignore social rules-using a glass for the milk, for example-to get what she wants when she wants it. It’s just a fantastic use of set design and blocking to develop character.

As cool as the Catwoman costume is, Michelle Pfeiffer quickly discovered one major flaw: it had to be completely removed if she wanted to go to the bathroom. She's since advised every other actress who's played the role to ask the costume designer to consider this.

I love DeVito in this movie. I know some people criticized his performance for being too over the top, but I think that's because they don't get what he's doing. His performance is anything but subtle but he's not overacting. The *Penguin* is overacting. Not DeVito.

The most surprising cameo in the film is probably Paul Reubens (AKA Pee Wee Herman) at the beginning as Oswald's father. Amusingly he then returned to the role in the Gotham series, same character, different universe. I remember during production while considering who to play Max, a producer or casting director suggested Christopher Walken, and Tim Burton of all people responded with, "ooh no, not him, he scares me." Sure enough, he asked him back years later for Sleepy Hollow as well.

"It feels like a comic book." YES. Thank you! You get it. I know a lot of people love Nolan's movies for their "realistic" interpretation (despite plenty of flaws that routinely get ignored), but the Tim Burton films had so much more sheer *personality* and chemistry between its characters. It really felt faithful to the spirit of a comic-book movie.

The Burton movies have a lot of entertainment value. There are huge chunks of Nolan's trilogy that are boring, but if most people are entertained by those movies, then more power to them. Although I do think that Batman Begins is a good movie and the best of the trilogy.

A lot of people don't realize that before the gritty realistic era of The Dark Knight, the comic book take was the norm for superhero movies. It feels weird for them because it's not realistic, but it was completely normal for us. Tim Burton's gothic style fit very well with the vibe of Gotham. I like the Dark Knight trilogy, but Tim Burton's Batman is the most stylish of all the Batman movies.
@Genesivare
@Genesivare Жыл бұрын
"YES. Thank you! You get it" No, they don't. And neither do you. Judging from utter BS you're talking about, you have never read a single Batman comic in your life (well, except those from Silver Era, maybe...). Literally EVERYTHING that is weird is this movie was totally made up by Burton and has ABSOLUTELY no basis in comic books, none whatsoever. Penguin was just a short, ugly man making for a living by ordinary organized crime whose gimmick was that he was interested in ornithology and who dressed in outfits that made him look somewhat like a penguin (courtesy of his sick, abusive mother who dressed him like that no matter what the weather was). He was definitely NOT any kind of deformant nor mutant who got raised by penguins - it's just pure BS that has literally NOTHING to do with comic books. Catwoman was not a weirdo who got resurrected by cats, either - he was just a burglar by profession, who happened to dress like a cat. Her origin story in this movie likewise has ZERO basis in original comic books. He was absolutely not crazy, he was just a common criminal, albeit with her own code and sense of honor (which definitely did NOT revolve around this "combating masculinity" rubbish). And Selina Kyle was orignally brunette, by the way - but that's just nitpicking. This whole plot point about a gang of crazed clowns who - for some (read: none) reason - follow Penguin and his totally nonsensical plans, has absolutely nothing in common with comics either. Nor anything else what happens in this movie. "I know a lot of people love Nolan's movies for their "realistic" interpretation" They also love them for being faithful towards the comic books. Something you obviously know very little about. Nolan was actually a FAN of Batman comics. Burton absolutely wasn't. But pretenders like you speak otherwise, seeking for an easy way to make themselves look "sophisticated" and "knowledgeable". "It really felt faithful to the spirit of a comic-book movie" Why don't you just READ THAT COMIC, for change? Instead of spouting rubbish and pretending how much of a "connoisseur" you are?

For me, this is the best true Batman! Not to mention the Christmas atmosphere, and I was shocked when Danny Devito went to the Golden Raspberry because I was delighted with his performance like the others, not to mention the ending where I burst into tears through a smile when he took the wrong umbrella and in the end it was the penguins who turned out to be his family. p.s. I am very glad that the upcoming Batman of Reeves has come close to the tone that I wanted to envy noir, I think Burton's Batman is gothic (although noir and gothic are the main features of Batman) and it's crazy that Keaton will appear in the Flash solo movie! Not to mention the fact that there was a rumor that he would appear in the Batgirl solo movie...

They fail to understand that there’s a way to do both and that Batman has always meant to be a darker character with a more gritty atmosphere but there’s also stuff that can be made for kids like the Lego Batman movie and that it’s really easy to separate the two.

I like how that although Max was a despicable person he did care about someone more than his own life. His son. Twice when his son is threatened he gets concerned. First when the gang comes for him and Chip steps in telling them they’ll have to go through him first. Max goes to get but at the urging of his son he does run for it. But than later when Penguin comes for Chip he couldn’t stand it and begged to go instead.

I agree, you can tell he truly loved him, he also mentions him to Selena before pushing her out the window, that his company and legacy he was going to give to Chip and he wasn't going to let anyone get in the way of that.

Tim Burton's little joke about Catwoman is that she goes from a Mouse to a Cat. She's shy, meek, and startles easy at first, but, becomes a sly, sleek, predator. She also has the best costume out of the list of Catwomen, it shows how broken she is. Just like her mind, it was destroyed and stiched together into something new.

Obviously, i love Devito's portrayal of the Penguin and Keaton's Batman but i agree Catwoman really stood out to me for this movie its why its really my favourite, Michelle Pfieffer captured both Selina Kyle and Catwoman so well. And yes Max Shrek really seemed like the real villain, not downplaying the other villains though. Tim Burton already had me liking the movie and the one before he just does the villains well. Also looking forward to Robert Pattinson's performance he's a really good actor and adapts to movie roles well but all people know of him is his role in Twilight. Next you should check out: Coraline Tim Burtons Corpse Bride Charlie and the Chocolate factory How to Train Your Dragon (Trilogy) Sweeney Todd Alice in Wonderland

The name "Max Shreck" is adopted from the German silent movie actor Max Schreck, who played the vampire count (based on Dracula) in Friedrich Murnau's "Nosferatu" from 1922. Besides this the German word "Schreck" means "shock, scare, fright".

There's a reaction channel that I watch regularly and virtually every panelist said that Pattinson is the best Batman after The Batman came out and I was so disappointed! lol That movie is so drawn out and boring and I really don't think Pattinson was very good. It's making me question their ability to distinguish subtle and nuanced acting (Keaton) from mannered and boring acting (Pattinson).

Ok, we need to get into something, and we need to do it now if you're going to start calling people idiots for the 'no killing' thing. If you call people idiots for that then you become worthy of being called ignorant yourselves, and here's why: The no killing rule comes from the 90s Animated TV show and the Arkham series of games, which have Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker, who to many are the definitive versions of both characters. This predates those, but they followed this up as the true spiritual successor when the other batman movies failed hard. That version of the batman had the character as a rock-solid idealist who underwent vigilante work while also going in with the philosophy of 'you can't fight crime by becoming a criminal'. The goal of that batman was to inspire utter terror in the criminal element of Gotham City while not crossing the line and becoming a murderer himself, and therefore no better than those he fights. The goal of this batman is quite simply to eliminate the criminal element, full stop. It's a very '80s action movie' way of addressing a problem, and for many it is the mid-point between the 80s action movie and the comics/90s animated series deeper philosophy we got later. Now later, when the other batmans came out, we had been long since spoiled with good writing and character development with the animated series of Batman, Superman and Justice League. When the movies came out and betrayed the philosophies behind the characters many of us spent years falling in love with, it likely felt like a betrayal of the fans themselves, hence the massive rejection of this new take. On a personal level, I agree with you guys that these two movies hit it out of the park and are fantastic renditions. The characters and casting is on point, the lines are cheesy without being too overdone and it's just the right level of over the top to be entertaining without beggaring belief. This pushes the cerebral aspect of the characters, making people think even if what they see is fundamentally repulsive or unnerving in some way. My advice would be give the animated series a go. It might turn you off as the 'oh cartoons are for kids' idea, but give it a go when you have the time if you haven't already... I bet you'll start seeing why those versions of the characters are so beloved and years later still resonate deeply with many fans. Take care and have a blast, guys!

A lot of people talk about the acting performances of Heath Ledger and Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight films but both Danny Devito and Michelle Pfieffer killed it in this film. 1. Back in the day there was actual scholar talk about the parallelism between Penguin’s origin and Moses’ origin. 2. Batman Returns technically is more of a Christmas movie than, say, Die Hard. 3. The whole “Batman doesn’t kill” thing is important because it makes or breaks the character; if you abide by that element or not is what establishes the character as either a hero or an antihero. And the version of Batman that’s been more accepted throughout the decades it’s not of the antihero. That’s the version shown in most of the comics and the Nolan trilogy, and especially in The Dark Knight it makes up the essence of the conflict. If in that movie you had the antihero killer Batman, there’d be no story; most conflicts in it would’ve been resolved easily. Batman is more interesting if he has a moral compass. Having him kill people makes for lazy storytelling.
@Don-ol8ze
@Don-ol8ze 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say that allowing Batman to kill is less lazy than liberating. While it may not accord with the comics, strictly speaking (and even this is debatable, given the original vision of the character) it frees the filmmakers to allow Batman to be ruthless as a vigilante, adding layers of pathos and ambiguity.
