Episode Notes:
1. Captured on the Mega SG.
2. The Game Gear/Master System got a Batman Returns that was developed by Sega themselves. It's arguably a better game.
3. The end boss is a real pain. Back in the day, it drove me to fury trying to beat him. I would destroy his life bar only to see him keep fighting. I ended up realizing that there was an out-of-the-way trick to beating him. It was a cheap and shallow tactic to make an easy fight difficult.
4. The hit detection really is terrible. I could make a whole video full of damage frames resulting from being hit well outside the sprite.
5. It'll only takes a few days to beat this even for average players. It has a reputation for being difficult, but it's only hard because it tries your patience with its BS design issues.

I played Batman Returns on the NES so much... It was an amazing game, amazing soundtrack... I really felt like I'm in the Gotham city :) Then I got Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) and bought its version and man that was... such a disappointment. The only good thing for me was an atmosphere of the game :/ And I was a huge fan of the movie... So I got back to NES version. Later in life I got my hands on SNES version and damn... I wish I had an opportunity to play it back in a day when I was a kid... That's like the best Batman Returns version.

I think the soundtrack is actually really good it's just if you're comparing it to the original Batman soundtrack that's literally one of the top three soundtracks on the console. It's like comparing zero to Kamikaze squirrel to Yoshi's Island. It's just not a fair comparison This entire game always felt like it was just a few extra months of Polish away from being a classic. Batman needs a little longer punch so that wasn't so hard to hit things and the colors needed to be brightened up a bed so it instead out better I never came across it back in the day but if I had I don't think I would have regretted it. Let's say it's up there with the original X-Men game. It's not a bad game it just has a bit of jank

@Benjamin Jagun Streets of Rage and Langrisser have elite level 10/10 OST's. Paul Gadbois OST's are like 6.5/10 perfectly good. X-Men is another OST that was perfect for the source material. I don't get the "made the system sound weak" it has some of the most bad ass drum samples on the console.

I actually loved this when it first came out. I rented it from Blockbuster and I played 20-30 min before school and then thought about it all day. The main menu idle sequence is insanely cool, with penguin dropping a woman from a tall building and Batman landing a second too late. The music for that is really cool too. It still doesn't hold a candle to the first game or revenge of the joker for me though.

My number one games of all time are tied between Metal Gear V and Final Fantasy 8 (I started the series with FF8). But Batman Returns on sega CD (recently played via emulation) is easily in my top 10 because of the stellar soundtrack, driving mode, and platforming. When it released it was the most complete Batman experience. You could glide, select gadgets from the utility belt, swing from the grapnel, DRIVE THE BATMOBILE, and it gave the dark feeling of the movie. I only beat it without codes one time, but the Genesis version was my most rented game when I was a kid (even though I hated it for the difficulty at the time). I watched a detailed playthrough 2 or 3 years ago, and it showed me the best way to deal with cheap enemies and bosses. That made me realize the importance (and intuitive game design) of exploring the levels for items, stocking up on them, and utilizing them meaningfully (some levels are stacked with helpful items if you know where to look). Hold onto certain items for certain bosses, certain items for certain enemies, and certain items for later levels. Fast forward, now it reminds me of how I stocked up on lives and batarangs in Batman 89 Genesis in order to have extra missiles on the vehicle levels (they carried over into vehicle powerups). Knowing what items work on which bosses is key, and when items don't work, you have to find the right pattern (i.e. jump, attack, drop down, attack, adjust accordingly, repeat). Though painstaking, the patterns will reveal themselves and they are exploitable. I found the driving on Sega CD even more relentless than the platforming, but I eventually mastered it through repetition. Mastering that learning curve, accompanied by that absolutely EPIC CD soundtrack, make it the definitive Burton Batman experience for me. Even as a kid I enjoyed this game more than the SNES Batman Returns. SNES version was more artistically and musically accurate to the movie, but extremely repetitive and almost impossible without cheats, and there was no true Batman platforming.

One of the greatest games ever. I still believe the soundtrack in this game is better than sequels. For the same reason Sega Lord X stated. Every song fit the stage and had this vibe to it. It sounded like something you would hear at the club around that time. I used to beat this game ever week when I had the cartridge. That and Streets of Rage 2. Still play through the entire trilogy to this day

As a kid, I only had a snes, but my cousin had a Sega Genesis and a bunch of games like Sonic 2, Maximum Carnage, Jurassic Park, Landstalker, World of Illusions and this one, among a few others. We played it to death. I still like it very much today. Graphics are minimalists for the system I guess, but I always thought the atmosphere was very strong, and the weapons were really nice to play with. And I like that they tried very much to recreate some key scenes from the movie.

To add insult to injury, not only is SNES Batman Returns better than what the Genesis got, but so is the 8 bit NES Batman Returns! If anyone from Game Sack is reading this, I’d love to see a “8 bit did it better than 16 bit” episode, not only comparing NES and Genesis Batman Returns, but also: James Pond 2: Codename Robocod (Master System vs SNES) Ultima (Master System vs SNES) Blaster Master (NES vs Genesis) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (NES vs Genesis) Jurassic Park 2: The Chaos Continues (Game Boy vs SNES)

As a kid I remember being blown away from how good the snes looked and sounded. Then I tried the genesis version and was so turned off by how slow batman was and how clunky combat was that I never wanted to play it again. Now that I'm older my opinion has completely changed. The snes visually did an incredible job of looking and sounding like Burton's movie, however, in execution I don't feel like batman one bit. Normal combat is fun at first but gets boring quick and the difficulty spike at bosses and batarang segments are ridiculous. I absolutely did not feel like batman while slowly and meticulously reducing the bosses stupid long health bars. Shockingly, the genesis version really makes you feel like Burton's Batman. Can you beat the enemies with combat alone? Heck yeah you can, but you have to be good. Sorta like, you know, Batman. Otherwise, use his gadgets. The better you are the less you need them but the variety is far, far better than anything else than anything else in the 16 bit games. The city and backgrounds are supposed to look murky and bleak. The sets of Burton's Batman are supposed to look like that. I will admit that the difficulty is high, but not in a huge boss health bar kinda way so it's much easier to stomach.

Oh, man. This port was just so bad. I had Batman Returns on the Genesis, and it was a struggle to play because just about everything felt wrong: especially the combat mechanics. I, like yourself, hated this one. But overtime this game has really grown on me over the years. My main gripe back then was the color pallete bitd(had to crank the brightness up on the crt). Understanding now, the color scheme chosen does fit with the motif of the movie. I'm shocked you thought the soundtrack for this is awful; it's a stepdown juxtaposed to the Sunsoft version but does hold it's own. The gameplay on Returns for me trumps the original Sunsoft version. Granted sans the driving sequences, the Sunsoft version while is gorgeous - gameplay is way too easy if even on *hard* difficulty; I like how Returns incorporates the weapons such as the grappling hook compared to it's predecessor.

You know, this game and its SEGA CD version brings up an interesting topic: Have you ever done a video comparing titles between the Genesis and CD? I always thought it was dumb to allow ports of Genesis games to a system that, by design, is compatible with them anyways (especially with how most of them were the classic “FMV and soundtrack” deal) but this and Spider-Man vs The Kingpin were examples I heard of where the CD difference was well worth the price of admission.

Loved this game as a kid. Only had played the NES Batman prior to this one. The Adventures of Batman & Robin game was another childhood favorite. Thankfully I never tried Batman Forever until I was older, it would have been too tragic for childhood me to bear.

I played this as a kid in a local videostore, and I liked it at the time. Now I see it's flaws, but I still don't think it's an awful, rather an average action platformer. I've never played Sunsoft Batman, even haven't seen it before started watching your channel. Beside this one I played Adventures of Batman and Robin which I still love today despite it's unforgiving difficulty. Also I saw Batman Forever in one game show on the tv, and I liked it's digitized graphics. I couldn't imagine what atrocious gameplay it has. 😀

The thing that stands out is the SMS uses its smaller colour pallete far more effectively, and has much better design.

I also initially hated this game when it released (especially when I compared it to how great the SNES version LOOKED), but now I feel the complete opposite! I love this game! In fact, I think it's the best Batman GAME on 16-bit consoles losing only to the adventures of Batman & Robin on the Genesis! Does Batman Returns for the Genesis dissapoint in a few areas compared to other Batman games of that era? Sure, but its got better gameplay mechanics and level design! Other Batman games may have looked and sounded nice, but going back to them now I find them boring, repetitive, unengaging, and shallow in comparison. I'm also a big fan of the Genesis soundtrack! In fact, that's the only part of the game that I enjoyed back in '92, but playing it again 20-something years later made me appreciate everything else! It might not look or sound the best, but overall, I think it's the 2nd best Batman game of that generation! 👍

I've never played this one. I was a Nintendo kid growing up, so I played the Sunsoft NES game for the 1st movie and the Konami Final Fight-esque Batman Returns for the SNES, which is one of the best beat 'em ups for that system. But based on the footage you've shown, the graphics for the Genesis version of Batman Returns aren't half bad. They're very faithful to the movie. I think the biggest problem is the use of color; which, I agree, looks very bland to god awful. Not all the dithering is bad (for example, I think the yellow hallway area looked amazing) but it seems like it was overused. The game also would have benefited from a bit more frames of animation to smooth things up.

I liked what i saw here. This game has its own style , on the contrary to what you show at the end of this video for the SNES version. The SNES version is like Streets of Rage with replaced characters and if i wanted to play something which looks like Streets of Rage ,i would play ... *Street of Rage 1 or 2* , not an *inferior* copycat !!That's why , between the 2 versions you showed us i'd rather spend my money on the MegaDrive's Batman Returns.

I've only played the Master System version, and that was actually quite a fun game. I mean you have lower standards playing a Master System game than you do playing a Genesis/Mega Drive game, so i'm not sure if it's actually a better game than the Genesis version, but it was definitely a lot of fun
