Paul Dini's writing on this episode completely reinvented the character, and Michael Ansara's voice performance delivers the character's cold-hearted anger and despair so well (Ansara was a long-time TV and movie actor, but I know him best in this role and as the Klingon, Commander Kang, in the original Star Trek).

Heart of Ice is such an iconic episode of this show. Co-creator and writer Paul Dini did such a phenomenal job in rewriting Mr. Freeze, who before this episode was mostly known for being a silly and forgettable villain in both the comics and in the more campy 1960s Batman show. But this episode forever changed Freeze into a more complex character with a very tragic backstory. I absolutely love a lot of the lines in this episode, mainly from Mr. Freeze. You can hear the cold and emotionless tone in his voice when he speaks. But you can feel the anger and utter sadness in what he says. Especially at the end when he says how he failed his wife. It’s such an emotional and heartbreaking scene but it’s one of the reasons why I and many others love this episode so much! You can understand why it won the show a Daytime Emmy award. Also it’s okay for you to empathize with Mr. Freeze. I know I did. I never really considered Mr. Freeze a full on villain because all he really cares about is saving his sick wife. It’s true that he shouldn’t just kill innocents just to get what he wants but with his backstory, you can understand the rage he has towards those who had wronged him and turned him into what he is. I’m once again so thrilled you enjoyed this iconic and memorable episode Meg! The next two part episode is another outstanding episode that I think you’re gonna love. It’s another heavy episode but it’s also pretty dark too. So can’t wait to see what you think

Also regarding movies with Mr. Freeze, there is Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub Zero that is set in this universe that was released in 1998 that you can check out later. There is also the live action movie Batman & Robin with Mr. Freeze as the main villain but unfortunately that movie is just downright awful and does not do any of the characters justice at all, including Mr. Freeze. So I'd stay clear of that movie completely

Also fun fact Meg, Ferris Boyle in this episode was voiced by Mark Hamill. This was actually Mark's first voiceover for the show, not Joker. Interestingly, Tim Curry was already casted to voice The Joker. But apparently the producers didn't think the voice Curry provided fit the character. So they recasted him and brought Mark in and of course the rest is history. Although in a later episode, they actually play a repeated soundbite of Curry's Joker laugh and it sounds so much different to Mark's

even more poignant than the snowglobe image is the ballerina/dancer in a music box. This might be a replica of Nora that Victor made...or a gift he bought for her; they don't say. It perfectly parallels Nora as a woman frozen in place, encased in glass. Victor is trying to bring Nora back by studying her condition, but the final touch of the music box freezing to his touch might allude to what life would've been like if she was revived - him being unable to directly touch her.

Before this episode, Mr. Freeze was just a one-note villain with a gimmick. This episode gave him so much pathos and made him a much better character. Also, they made a full-length movie called Batman and Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero a few years after Mask of the Phantasm. While it's not quite MotP, it's still very good. Certainly better than Batman & Robin, as movies go.

"I shouldn't be sympathizing with the villains..." That's one of the best elements of many Batman stories: that the villains are not entirely black and white (they kind of used to be, because comics in other time had to be more simplistic, almost by law); quite some are people who, in a turning point of their lives, went down a rabbit hole and haven't found their way back (which is their tragedy and why they have to be also stop: that they have motives doesn't mean they are free to drag others to their chaos and pain). Besides, these characters underline a bit the general spirit of Gotham City: in a place that has lived under the shadow of corruption for that long, not all the monsters can be easily identified because they wear an elaborated costume. If they can be eventually redeemed or not... that's a different commentary about the nature of humanity in itself. "Should I see other films featuring Mr. Freeze" Well, after the Tim Burton films, Mr. Freeze appears in the fourth film of that franchise (Batman & Robin), played by Arnold Schwarzenegger; but... many consider it's generally a horrible film (I guess you can enjoy some bits, but it's up to you XD).

Mr Frezze among Riddler was the hardest characterfor them to have multiple times becuse Friezze´s story is short and simple. They only use him a few times but he got a amazing arc that gose from this, to the movie Sub-Zero, to Season 4 of Batman and finally Batman Beyond that finish it all. Riddler was hard becuse they felt the riddles they come up with would be to hard for children watching or to simple for Riddler to use. So he barely got this 3 episodes he is relevent in. Season 4 only have him in the background, never as a character.

I'm mean, you're *supposed* to sympathize with the villain. He's a villain, but he's not a cackling, evil villain, he's definitely sympathetic. Mr Freeze, prior to this ep, wasn't really like that; he was a much more one-note villain. This episode re-worked his character entirely to make him a character you can understand and sympathize with, that was entirely the point. And, of course, it really worked. Incredible writing.

If you see the Batman 1966 TV series, you will see just how ridiculous and campy a villain Mister Freeze used to be. The only joke was a blue middle-aged man using 1960s teen-ager slang like 'wild'. That was the time when the Batman TV was so popular that many an excellent actor wanted to play a villain on the show, but quality was slipping from late in the first series until the end, Batgirl lifting things a bit for girl-watchers, but not much good. There was also a 1960s Batman movie, using the TV show as a plan, with a sort of Secret Society of Super-Villains of most of the Bat-rogues gallery.
