Story starts at 4:40 for those that want to get right into it and skip my intro. This is arguably one of the most popular Batman stories ever written. This was the first real adult superhero comic I ever read, it was my gateway into the world of comics, so I will always have real sentimental attachment to it. Hope you all enjoy my coverage on it. Does the book hold significance for any of you? Do you agree with its place in comic history, or is it overhyped? Let me know your thoughts.

I also love this book. Frank Miller does 'gritty' very well. I think his art works very well for this type of book. I think it might be my favorite batman book, also. I also loved the two sequels, though they aren't quite as good as this one, though my favorite thought comes from the second. It's either from Hal or the narrator: Alien races come to Earth, then run back home, for fear of the only race with orbital defenses that point down to themselves. It's a paraphrase, sorry, but I don't have access to these books right now.

Im gonna be totally honest, and I swear I’m not just being a contrarian; I despise this book. I get that Bats had to get a public makeover to distance himself from the corny era, but good god… feels so forced edgy to me. Catwoman, an old whore. Alfred strokes out and dies. Superman, a limp noodle cowed by a corrupt government. Batman, who’s been grieving for Jason for a decade just suddenly picks a new Robin who’s big skill is slingshotting, calls Jason a “good soldier” (I guess his decade of reflection brought him to the conclusion that he did nothing wrong and Jason dying was just how the cookie crumbled) and then he recruits a whole army of under aged kids. The Joker breaking his own neck after killing a bunch of children. Why not have someone stomp on a litter of puppies while we’re at it. Like, I get it, it’s grim dark. Also, I don’t think the cops would seriously have an issue even if Bats beat the joker to death in front of them; weird take to have the most corrupt police force in comics see a dead MASS MURDERER and be like “hey man, that’s not cool, he had rights!” And why is every normal person sooooooo stupid in this book? Idk, I just never got this one and I know I’m in the minority there, and I’m glad other people enjoy it. Just not my cup’o’tea at all.

Joker was definitely terrifying here; he was at his best as a fairly realistic psycho. Also, I liked how the Batman vs Superman fight went, it wasn't like Batman would have an easy win, he heavily relied on Superman being weakened and having Green Arrow as his card up the sleeve plus the armour and knowing that Superman wasn't going at him with everything, because they are still friends

Can I just point out two things. I think Batman killed Joker. I interprete his conversation with Joker as Bruce justifying breaking his one rule. In Bruce’s mind he didn’t kill joker, joker killed himself. Also, I think Batman shot that thug, the panel is painted Grey as if to signify Batmans moral code slowly decreasing (also the speech bubbles on the final panel with Joker is also coloured Grey) Just my opinion :)

The only ones that are legitimately great are Batman Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. Some of them are not that good. They were not published in order, it all began with Dark Knight Returns in 1986, so there is an argument to start with that one. But this is the full Frank Miller Batman-Universe in Chronological Reading Order: 01 - Batman Year One (1987) 02 - Superman Year One (2019) 03 - All Star Batman & Robin (2008) 04 - Spawn: Batman (1994) 05 - Dark Knight Returns: The Last Crusade (2004) 06 - The Dark Knight Returns (1986) 07 - The Dark Knight Strikes Again (2002) 08 - The Dark Knight III: The Master Race (2017) 09 - The Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child (2019)

I wish I had the means and the position to do it. The key to getting that right is to follow the comic as a script and to get the look right. Gotham, as a character, has to be made scary and claustrophobic but also gaudy and glitzy. The bright colours contrasted with dark shadows are what really make that book aesthetically-speaking. Also the political subtext and satire must be kept.
