You did a good job on the video , however there is a common misconception about Dark Knight Returns. While yes it was dark and it did take the Batman Mythos into a great new direction, it was not the first Batman comic to return it to its darker roots after 66 TV series. This was done by Dennis O’Neil and Neil Adams who in the early 70s did this and introduced very key characters to the Mythos, such as Ra’s Al Gul and others. But yes you did a great job in the video however.

True, to a degree. While those issues did come first, I would argue that they still weren't as gritty and dark as DKR was. Miller took batman to another level of darkness in both tone and story/character portrayals.

Great vid! Sweet editing in the front end of the video. The Batman v Superman scene is still one of my favorite moments in comics. ✌🏻

Thanks Kenny! I wish I had more time to give my videos the TLC they deserve lol. Been working on it little by little. & I agree the BvS scene was awesome!

Great review. I'm the same way about the story and art. But, as a 20 something-year-old when this came out, I, my friends, my LCS staff, and the comic community, were blown away by how different this was--for the character, for the story-telling, for the medium, etc. It influenced and inspired creators and companies (mostly indies) to go dark and try new things. Is it my cup of tea, no, but I'm not into the dark/dystopian stuff anyway. Not to sound like an old man, but so much of DK Returns has been put into titles in the last 2 decades--and really to a further extreme--in darker art, stories, themes, etc., that younger readers may see DKR as "tame". (I hate to use the word "desensitized".) But it was such a gut-punch to those of us growing up with Krypto, Lois Lane's dream weddings to Superman, and Robin eating cookies and milk! 😆 Thank you for your review. I may have to go dig out my old copies now!

Exactly, same boat - it may not be our cup of tea but we can recognize it's significance in comic history & respect it. It's so cool that you were reading comics at the time and were able to witness the impact it left on the community! & I totally understand what you're saying about the younger generation being desensitized. I think they/we definitely are! This reminds me of how my parents always told me "The Exorcist" was one of the scariest movies they'd ever seen growing up. By the time I watched it, at around 9yrs old, I didn't think it was as scary as they made it out to be...but for their generation it changed the horror landscape!

Good day. I enjoyed your review. You highlighted the most important parts of the comic. When it came out it took everyone by surprise. There was a maturity in it which was mostly absent in most DC and Marvel main stream titles, with the notable exception of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, which Moore took over in 1983. The independents, underground comix, and the European market had already been dong what Miller did with Dark Knight, bringing in real world issues, politics, and satire into their stories. Cable news was relatively new, and opinion shows were growing in number, with experts or so called experts weighing in on issues. Miller predicted what would become common place in the media by the 90's and onward. The Cold War was hot at the time with tensions rising between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, as characterized by Superman doing the U.S.'s dirty work in Central America combating the equally dirty work by the Soviets. (Alan Moore's Watchmen, like much of popular culture, novels, films, and European music videos constantly reminded us that if both super powers went to war, it was the end of the world). It made sense to me that Batman wouldn't be part of it nor Green Arrow. As I type this I think of two songs, Red Skies by the Fixx and 99 Red Balloon by Nena, and the FX show, The Americans, which takes place in the 80's.

Thanks GV! You of all people know, there is SO much to talk about in this book. I've known the basic plot and significance in comic history for some time but it seems like ppl often brush over the analysis...which in this case, is EVERYTHING, holy smokes!...& still, I don't even feel like I did it justice. It was a feat trying to reel it all in for this review. I didn't even go into the females in positions of power or as you said, the Cold War parallel. Just so much to touch on & so radically different than any other Batman book i've read! Glad I did this tho. Thanks for your thoughts & insights!

I did review of this on my friends channel. I love The Dark Knight Returns comic. Year One is my personal favorite because I love Frank Millers reimagination of Batman's origin.

Great review! I read this all in once as well and found the constant news reports to be annoying, but I get why they're in the story.

Thanks! & yeah i found myself putting the book down whenever they'd pop up. Just felt super redundant.

Great review JoJo. I really like this story as well. It is not my favorite version of Batman but it is definitely different and interesting. I have all 4 of the original books. The animated version of this story is awesome too.

Def such a unique and interesting take on the Batman, even for today. That's awesome that you have the originals! I still gotta check out that animated movie. Thanks for watching, R!

I love the fact that Batman is an old man and beat up the other thing I like about the book is the social and political messages. I agree that the art work is harsh, it's definitely jarring and not for everyone. Loved the beer break, If I did those in my videos I would never finish, it would just end up a video of me drinking beer. Excellent review!
@FlixandComix4 жыл бұрын
Yeah this book was pretty dense so the beer break was def merited! hahaha I'm currently reading "DK Strikes Again" so we'll see if i'll need a beer for that review too lol Thanks for visiting, Cup!

It took me a along time to read this. Never wanted to pick it up because of Miller's artwork inside. After watching the animated movie I fell in love with the story and it pushed me to read the books. The story is amazing and it deserves all of the praise. But again, Miller's artwork is a miss for me.

Yeah, i def felt similarly reading this book. Good to know you liked the movie tho, still gotta check that out.

I, too, got sick of the TV talking heads and talk shows. It *really* didn’t age well with this book. Miller being overtly topical was kind of new at the time, he was given license, and he just went with it, I guess. Some of it is kind of funny. The pencil and marker sketches, in supplemental material(s), of his splash pages are really fun to look at. Very chaotic and energetic. The best in this vein was in his Ronin book from a few years earlier. Yes, the animated movie is fun. OMG on the beer break! Love the UFC jersey. Ya gots to do an AMA on your UFC experiences/opinions/travels! Or I’ll just continue to bother you at the end of your live streams. 😜 Dustin Poirier for the win!
@FlixandComix3 жыл бұрын
Hey, you were ON POINT with everything you said in this comment. Especially the Dustin Poirier part!! Hahaha I still gotta do the "Master Race" review. That one is up next & yes, i've def pondered doing more MMA talk type of content! Maybe in the near future, we shall see.

Reading it right now, loving the story but I’m not loving the art and absolutely dreadful lettering. The lettering was especially confusing…

He certainly does! Def outside the box type of writer. The beer is from a place here in Vegas called "Beer Zombies Bottle Shop". They have a bunch of really good craft beers! Not sure if they have a website but they def have an IG page. The artwork on their cans is super cool too!

It was originally a 4-issue set but they sell it as a collected graphic novel as well.
