+Phillip Jeffries Schnepp is always right. John Campea's "checklist" of things he needed to happen for this movie to be good comes off like a DC fanboy at best and a 12 year old boy at worst.
@thomas94518 жыл бұрын
John Morgan The movie clearly has very big issues. Its pacing, its transitioning from scene to scene, underdeveloped characters, horrible writing...and the list goes on and on. If you loved it that's ok, but objectively it's not a good movie. To me, it's pure GARBAGE actually. I am a huge DC fan and to see them treat Batman and especially Superman like this really made me angry. DC / WB clearly rushed here and crammed everything into one movie because they want to catch up with Marvel, while they should have done their own thing, with standalone movies for Batman and Superman before BvS and Justice League. I agree with Schnepp, Superman didn't have to die and Doomsday didn't have to be in this movie. This movie should have been between Batman and Superman (as the inappropriate title suggests) but what we get is only a few minutes of them fighting once. Think about it, DC lost an opportunity to explore the death of Superman in its own movie and then you have Doomsday. That's gone all out the window now and I'm really worried for Justice League...they need to fire Snyder and get someone like George Miller.
@robertreitermanjr29738 жыл бұрын
+Phillip Jeffries I disagree.....Schnepp has good points, but I feel he takes it a bit too far, Campea had good points that made sense and Schnepp tried to break those down. It just feels that it didn't deliver on what he was expected and he's angry. I loved the movie, I understand people's issues with the cuts and edits, but I feel there were so many strong scenes that they out weighed the problems with the editing and pacing. Henry, Ben, and Jesse, all were strong, the action was great, and it sets up the Justice League well....so there shouldn't be this much anger. Maybe they were expected it to be the greatest superhero movie of all time? I loved it, and I don't agree with Schnepp on it, but it's his opinion.

Schnepp seems like he was so hyped for BvS that it couldn't live up to his expectations. so he was underwhelmed and disappointed. I had tears in my eyes when Clark pleased to Bruce to save Martha. It humanized Clark in a way that Bruce was invaluable of seeing. He was older and tired and had lost Robin. He lost his humanity. You take a man who is so haunted and cracked by the loss of mother and father that when he heard that name years later, it stirs him out of his rage. Batman promises Superman that Martha won't die tonight. He has a chance to make sure Clark never goes through what he went through, all those years ago. It was so powerful to me. I love how Bruce ruminates on his legacy and how he wants his legacy to be having saved the world from an alien menace by killing Superman. Now, his legacy will be saving the world from an alien menace by assembling the Meta-Humans and creating the Justice League.

It is a poorly written and directed film. It's messy and there are far too many things happening. It's not focussing on the central plot of the film which is Batman v Superman. They had one interaction before they have their big showdown, which isn't enough to establish the weight of their battle. The fact that they fight each other because Lex has captured Martha is such a cop out and a rubbish plot device. The exciting thing for many people was the fact that there is two heroes with differing ideologies on achieving a similar goal and the conflict such ideologies cause between them both. It was that conflict I felt was what I was interested in and that barely played a role. It also tried to deal with Lex and his ego believing that he can break gods so to speak. Interesting theme yes but that warrants a film on its own. There was just way too much going on. It should have been cut down to make a more focussed film. One of the reasons Deadpool worked so well as a movie is because its a very focussed film. I really wanted to like this movie but I'm sorry it is not good film making. On a side note, the editing of this film was atrocious!

I am in the middle between them both. Schnepp voiced legitimate criticisms about the lack of motivations and the mishmash of disconnected scenes, locations and plotlines but he also didn't give the film enough credit for what it got right (which was a lot). Campea was more honest about the good parts but not critical enough considering the poor editing and disconnected storytelling. 7/10 which is a shame because with this cast and characters this should've been a 9/10.
@jpwrye418 жыл бұрын
TheShreester The movie could've been virtually the same but if they changed the motivation for Superman to stop a crazed "unstoppable vigilante" in Batman it could've been better. What they should've done was have Lex and his mercenaries take the batarang left at LexCorps after Bruce stole the Kryptonite and gone to Gotham to like a scene of a big mob drug deal and kill everyone in a gruesome fashion, brand all of the bodies and leave the batarang there for Superman to find. This would've been a better way to get him to try to stop Batman than the Martha angle.

Everything made sense if you think about it afterward. 1. Bruce dreaming about his past events in the first 5 minutes as good. It was a nod to frank Miller, and brings us to the Falling Action. 2. The man that was pinned down under the beam was very critical to the movie. He hates Superman for causing the building to collapse on him. In which Bruce after saving him in Man of Steel and now finding out the man he saved died really got to Bruce. His anger finally exploded. 3. flash-forward to Lois lane was well put. We know 18 months past and she is trying to get a story from the local terrorist ring leader. Jimmy Olsen is killed of screen for nobody is going to want to see him getting shot in the end in a comic book movie. I have a feeling in the extended cut Rated R version we will see it. 4. Superman probably heard Lois was in trouble and decided to go there in the first place. Him taking out the man that held the woman he loved was a big mistake. True he could have just put him aside yet we believe he killed the man. It isn't confirmed he did. 5. the bullet Lois found was a plot point that could show evidence that Lex Corp has done shady things for what purpose though? 6. The whole desert scene was to show case how they were going to frame Superman. While the Senator wasn't convinced upon this per say, she does believe Superman's actions as a whole conflicts with the law. KGB Beast is later a TIE into the Batman plot line that has a rather good conclusion. 7. The Superman Lois scene was heart touching to see Superman is happy with Lois Lane which you can tell has grown. However Superman is sadden that the world is trying to find a reason to hate him since he is a "freak", a "monster", and alien menace that brought his own kind here to earth. 8. Batman branding the criminal was good. He spared him to say at least, and they made Batman MOVE and show case that he does inflict fear, and the police scene when the officer shots the guy was quite funny and quite scary. 9. As the movie starts we know that thanks to the Kryptonion ship they discovered a radiation rock that can cut threw kryptonion skin. This also Ties into the Emerald city myths in which a city was made out of emerald. Also a good Wizard of Oz reference. It is being transferred over by Lex Luthor Jr who is the one that ordered the KGB Beast squad to frame Superman but also start getting this attention to Batman. Nice tie in since KGB Beast was in charged to retrieve the shipping order and Batman discovered at the nick of time after the Wonder Woman scene incident. 10. Batman has a nightmare about his parents tomb bleeding for it is to show HE himself is bleeding on the inside. The loss of LIFE such as his parents, Jason or any Robin, seeing friends turn evil has gotten to him. Thus Man Bat makes a appearance to show Bruce's fears are starting to come back. The "fever, the rage, feeling of powerlessness, that turns good men cruel" is very forth telling after that scene. 11. We know Alfred has been working on Batman's armor already, and gear. It seems like within the 18 months that had past Batman was getting ready for the showdown with Superman if it came to that. Alfred also points out Bruce isn't acting himself as he once was, in which this batman is branding, and mowing down those in transportation. 12. We later go to Superman trying to talk to perry about how the Batman is acting outside the law, however Perry doesn't care for it isn't his problem. Thus this picks up interest in Superman wanting to at least attempt to talk batman out of this by any means. I can go on, and i will yet the point being is EVERY scene has a purpose and heck Lois Lane going back for the spear didn't make sense to me at first yet later on after the movie ended it DID. She is a reporter, she saw this thing was created from the clash alien ship. She takes a wild gamble that this weapon that Batman created could be the key to finish off this foe. However Not only that BUT if LEX gets his hands on this weapon it would be an end game for Superman. Thus this is speculation on my part at best but i mean if she can use her brains to point out by connecting the sightings, the myths of this Man of Steel, and find out who Superman was in Man of Steel. Then i have no doubt she could figure out the spear could possibly kill Doomsday. I am sure this will be further explained in the ultimate Rated R version yet in all honesty the first half WASN'T boring rather than fast scenes that BUILT upon what will later happen in the film. telling minor story's to build a further grand scheme was a great way. I can see why people/ and critics find it messy YET after looking back on the film it really wasn't.
@thehowlingfantodz8 жыл бұрын
+Sora: King of Hearts. Most people are saying that batman's motivation makes sense. No one is claiming not to understand why lois went back for the spear. Now, explain lex's motivation.
@masterblaster79538 жыл бұрын
Gh05t The critics were asking why did Lois go back to the scene. I also pointed out Batman for there are some people and critics that didn't understand why batman was doing this. Lex's saw Superman as his enemy. He sees Batman as his enemy yet he plans on using two people he doesn't hold in high regards to take one another out as a plan A option. Superman is a figure that could be an enemy to the public, he is the "savior" yet Lucifer was an angel, he has seen that all that he has done, his father's legacy is all for nothing if an alien race could just destroy everything in a blink of an eye. After learning 100,000 different knowledge gather by the alien ship he is now full of knowledge and is very unstable. You can tell Darkside has gotten to him, and that he wants to prove he can defend humanity by killing off Superman by his own genius mind. For if he can't then Darkside is going to win. It is a matter of survival for Lex, and that is the motivation i can tell and Jessy's take on Lex in the interviews. He even says " he sees batman, and superman beneath him" Thus the line and " now god kneels before me" dam.
@masterblaster79538 жыл бұрын
Mahooza Thank you.
@thehowlingfantodz8 жыл бұрын
Sora: King of Hearts. But how did the movie demonstrate lex's motivations. I get that he see's them as his enemy, but why? Because superman can destroy him? Well they should have played up his insecurity more, his fear more. I understood batman's fears, but lex's? Whatever weirdly constructed lines he said alluding to gods and devils he seemed like a bored kid with too much money and power playing pranks on people. He wasn't funny, he wasn't interesting, he wasn't threatening or menacing, he was just an annoyance. Overall I didn't like the character, or the performance. IT wasn't good enough. Did you think it was? I'm curious. And I'm not interested in getting into a flame war about it.
@masterblaster79538 жыл бұрын
+Gh05t 1. lex was abused by his father. God did nothing and it slowly ate at him. He realized that if god is all powerful then he isn't always all good, and if God is good then he isn't all powerful. Thus God plays no sides. He just acts upon his OWN interest. Thus if Superman wanted to he can take over the whole world. 2. His interaction upon the ship changed him towards half way after the court room scene. You see he is more unstable and very scared about something. We later find out at the end of the movie SOMETHING is coming and now that Earth's "God" is dead there is nothing able to stop it. 3. Lex points out to the Senator that the devils come out of the sky rather from the ground for it shows that something is out there and since Superman is one of those things form another world. Then only fuels Lex's rage and hate towards things that are above him. 4. lex points out that his father once use to live under a dictator/war lord. Over there they would have people WAVE flowers at the warlord. Does that mean the war lord is GOOD? NO they are just afraid of him and thus act "good" towards him when they are afraid. Thus the MAIN reason why people are holding Superman up high is because they do not WANT Superman to turn evil, to just decided to rule the world. However Lex wanted to take Superman's "good" image out of the equation and thus when Superman takes out the warlord either by killing him or not. Lex's troops pose as the warlords criminals to frame Superman THAT his actions caused many others to die. The court room scene was meant to not only break the bat into taking action, but to show Superman just how WEAK he is, just how despite ALL of his power he was unable to stop the bomb. "If god is good, then is isn't all powerful" that line rings right there at that moment. lex isn't so much afraid of Superman just rather wants him gone. He stands as everything Lex has grown to hate, he hates god, he hates those that have all the power YET are not good people all the time, and those who are good that have all that power WASTE it all. HIM learning about Darkside and the true nature of the so called "new gods" really shows how much Lex is torn by this and just breaks. Too much information left him crazy and he needs to to process all of this. Thus while this Lex isn't all business and bulky, he does retain the deviousness of lex, the coyness, the insane ideas lex comes up with, and is threatening if you don't take him seriously. That is why both Superman and the senator fail at that. The man who wrote the Ar of War clearly tells you to NEVER underestimate your foes. If you do you only set yourself up. How do you think Thor fails half the time when it comes to loki. You should know not to underestimate loki yet you know the moment you do you are screwed.

This is the kind of movie that provides character justification- But not actual character motivation. And that's the difference between Campea and Schnepp. And sadly for a lot of you fans that's why Schnepp is 100% correct. When I left the movie, I remember I told my buddy that this was the greatest "Comic Book" movie ever made. But after a day of thinking back on it, I realized it was the worst FILM it could have possibly been. Visual spectacle shouldn't carry a movie with batman and Superman. This isn't a Transformers movie. Beyond Batman and maybe Wonder Woman, no one has any motivation other than the plot. Superman isn't motivated to save the world. His externalized lack of hope proved that. Lex isn't motivated by power or wealth, his comment about daddy issues proved that. People keep saying, oh well, Luthor hates Superman so that's why planned this. But then, what motivated him to include Batman in his plan two years in advance? What if Superman had killed Batman? What would he have done with Doomsday then? What if Superman hadn't killed Doomsday? Would he have let Doomsday destroy earth? Hatred isn't a motivation, revenge is. That's why Batman works in this film. Plus the absurd Africa sub plot, the forced sequel references, Batman killing, Superman's death, and the quick turn from enemies to friends... ALL FAIL miserably because the movie doesn't stop to focus on WHY these characters are doing what they're doing. Nor do they tell us in a cohesive manner. And at 2 hours and 30 minutes it really could have. It's a shame.

This movie deserves less than 30% that got on RT. What was WW's purpose in this movie?? It would've been absolutely the same without her. Why did Lex had to kidnap Martha? Batman and Superman would've fought anyway. He didn't know that ,but it made no sense to me. The fight between Batman and Superman had no weight like at all. They didn't fight because of any ideological differences , but cause they think the other one is a douchebag.If they had like one minute conversation the fight would've been unnecessary.Which brings me to my other point. Captain America and Iron Man had more screen time and dialogue in a movie about the Avengers than Batman and Superman had in a movie called Batman v Superman. And the Avengers had Thor,Hulk,Black Widow,Hawkeye ,Loki and Nick Fury. What did BvS had? Lois Lane , 12-13 lines from WW and 30 seconds clips from Cyborg, the Flash and Aquaman... worst cameos in history.Doomsday was absolutely wasted.This movie also shits on Superman big time. Why does he threatens Batman straight away? What did he do to him? He gives him crap about him being too brutal ,but the first thing Superman does in this movie is flat out kill a guy.. WTF?The only purpose of this scene is to make Batman angrier.His death had no impact whatsoever.There is no conflict between Batman and Superman it's just misundestanding , that's why from Batman being ready to kill him went to Batman being his best friend in about 10 seconds.. Overall disappointment. This movie shoul've been much more. And im no Marvel fan , Superman and Batman are my 1 and 2 and that is not what they deserved. Batman is badass there's no doubt about that, but he is a murderer as well. He kills people without any explanation.That's my opinion.If you like this movie, than Im glad for you, cause I didn't and by the looks of it many others share my opinion. 5/10

I really freaking enjoyed this movie!!! 😁😁 Now I did go in to this with moderate expectations and I totally agree with you guys about the lacking character motivations (Besides Batman) and writing issues, but overall I left the theater excited and pumped! Did not see the Death of Superman coming but all in all I think it worked in the general tone of the film and the world motivation of this DCEU. Especially how it sets up Justice League Part 1. Hopefully Sydner can pull it off, not worried about his visual direction tho. All the visuals were intense and crips. I was never lost in all the action and debris. Now I was really worried about the DC cinematic universe because I didn't really like Man of Steel. But really loved all the set up in BvS. Seeing the Flash in that future Vision was intense and mystifying. And every single Gal Gadot scene as Wonder Woman was FANTASTIC!!! I even enjoyed Alexander Luther (He's not Lex Luther to me) and agree with Campea. His motivation wasn't fleshed out but it was there. I was lost for a second with the darkside "ping ping ping" but you guys cleared that up so thanks ^.^ in the End the DCEU has a very different tone than the MCU and I appreciate that. As a Comic book fan it felt as if some scenes hopped right out of the page and onto the big screen. Hopefully Zach Snyder does get a co-director for story flow cause the Resurrection of Suerman story could get wonky. But I'm pumped for what the DCEU has to offer!! I rate BvS 7.0/10 👌🏾👌🏾

@brendonkivell98878 жыл бұрын
I'm with Schnepp on this one probably because hes coming from a writers and filmmakers point of view as am I. By the time all the cool fighting stuff comes around at the end I simply did not care because the writing was bad, there are too many conveniences story wise, explanations that were rushed over and it just came over as lazy. However that's why I can see the dividing opinions between fans and so called "critics". Most of the fans arguments are that it looks amazing, the fights are cool and can brush aside the more technical issues because they got what they wanted. While critics of the film agree too that it is a good looking film, character motivation, bad narrative throughout and bizarre editing choices make BVS seem sloppy to people who appreciate story telling as a big aspect of what makes a good film. Did like Campea's last thought though. Keep Snyder on for the visual side of Justice League but get a co-director to sort out the story and character elements.Shit save some time searching and let Afflect do that. Argo and The Town are great. Warner bros and DC haven't screwed up the cinematic universe. There's enough good stuff that they can still make it work. .
@dygz8 жыл бұрын
It's bizarre editing choices if you're expecting a linear Heroes Journey or Save the Cat formula, yes. Again, it's more Picasso than Rembrandt. Lots of dream sequences and flashbacks. Yes. But, again, that is also helped by knowing all the references. Also, very reminiscent of the storytelling methods Grant Morrison was trying with Final Crisis.

Bravo Schnepp, I 100% agree, It was a messy film, bad writing, I however loved the action, but thats about it. The whole making Superman ‘accountable for his actions’ was a bad move, bringing in that debate was pointless cuz during the doomsday fight I’m sure they killed a cpl hundred ppl. Bats motivations was messy too; Bats was going kill Superman but didn’t when Lois whispered Martha? Oh now he’s a good guy cuz he’s trying to save his mama named Martha?? Bats watched him for 2 years!! He didn’t see all the other good things Superman was dong??! I dont think the motivations were as questionable as you guys say they are. Like John said, Lex's motivations are like Batman's. Superman can do whatever he wants....he could rule the entire world if he wants or destroy it. He isnt a fan of either of those options, so he needs to die or there needs to be a check in place (kryptonite). I thought this was pretty clear in his speeches to the Senator. Also he had daddy issues. He feared his dad more than anything else in the world and now he has to fear gods. Superman doesnt like Batman cause he is a vigilante and taking out criminals the wrong way. I thought this was pretty clear in his convos with Perry and Bruce at the party. His motivation for fighting him was that Lex took Martha, but Superman actually didnt bite on this one, as when he confronted Batman he tried to get his help. Wonder Woman's motivations......Doomsday is blowing shit up and Batman and Superman needed help. I dont think any of that was confusing nor did I have to think too hard about any of that.
