Batocera On The Raspberry Pi 4 is Beautiful!

Been using Batocera on my Pi 400 and have to say, it's awesome. Fantastic performance all round. Was even playing Saturn NiGHTS today with very few problems. Plus, big thumbs up for the stunning PlayStation X theme. Gorgeous!

The Pi400 helps a lot. Nights on a Pi4 not overclocked is slow as hell compared to Retropie. I just wish Retropie would come to the 400. My Mega arcade Image is close to ready ( all the CD consoles as well and a lot of Hacks ) but I need to keep a Pi4 to make sure it runs.

@@DownMemoryLaneParis Yeah to be fair my Pi 400 is overclocked a little. 2000mhz on the cpu, and 750 on the gpu. Without this they don't run great, but with it, it makes a helluva difference. I'm thrilled I can play NiGHTS on it, and Dreamcast performance is absolutely superb. Batocera seems just as complete as Retropie at the moment. Better than Recalbox easily, imho.

​@@creechrfeechr8094 Recalbox is splendid IMO, as i would rather have less options, but ease of use and overall compact experience. EXcept Recalbox is hard to customize. I mean splashscreen, videos, music...etc. Bactocera is great and Retropie is awesome...in term of performance and options. My only problem ( and I am facing it now ) is that sometimes, something happens and I cannot see where files are. Where to open. Where to change configs...etc. I wish there was a bit more clarity.

I've just finished building my retro arcade cabinet based on RPi4 8Gb and Batocera v.30. I chose this distribution because of its performance characteristics. It's quite fast, especially in the matter of shaders (early I tested RetroPie, Lakka and Recalbox).

And then there's those that take your work, slap their name on it and act like it's theirs with a rom added or two (or removed). However, hats off eternally to you and your work. Clean, fast and I learn a lot looking at them in details. @Hurstie, without you I would never have started to customize interface. Gimme a few more month to be part of the club !!! It becomes a passion. I am still relying on both of your awesome work ( and some others too like Supreme team ) as I am not a great coder...but it will come. Kudos to both to be the best of the best in Pi images, scripts and theme building

Well, shit. I used to make maps for some old school games and absolutely get ur annoyance. I have only recently got in to the Pi thing but have already been impressed by ur work. Wolfanoz, too. I have downloaded a number of ur respective images and have been blown away by the quailty. And, like Romain, have learned a lot by ur example. They say that plagiarism is the highest form of flattery ... Personally I think its a fuckin trash move ;) Chin up mate. There is a certain comical value in emulating ur emulation.

Nice build, and an Arcade section would make it near-perfect. I've strayed away from RetroPie lately, and lean more towards Batocera and RecalBox just for the ease of use and also the ease of adding ROMs.

@@Woodwerker Retropie is way more stable though. I build arcade cabinet, and Bactocera tend to be unstable after a couple of hours. But Retropie does need a lot of setup prior to that. Recalbox would be my choice, but some set back in the emulation side just kill it ( Saturn not available, PSP still not smooth, and NeoCD unstable ) All in all, Bactocera is the easiest and opened, Racalbox the most stable but limited, Retropie is like a PC vs a MAC. All is there, and more than ever...but requires tons of optimization. But man, the image I am finishing now is so neat. As for scraper, I use www.skraper.net/ sometimes does not work 100%...but seriously saving time and headaches. Even the latest Recalbox cannot compete.

I really dislike retropie. Takes forever to boot and saves are saved in with the games but in Batocera, it boots in less than 20 seconds and saves have their own folder with subfolders so you just drag and drop the saves folder to make a quick backup or put the saves on another device. And I love the batocera.conf file. I love how organized I am with all my controls and shaders that I set there and I dont have to worry about them getting changed. I personally will never use retorpie again but I do have a great build with lots of computer systems on there that I'll keep using. But yeah, Batocera is significantly better in a lot of reasons. Get to settings with one button press no need to scroll through all your systems to get to the settings page. I do want to try Retrobat for PC. BigBox kinda sucks. Too much effort getting everything up and running, and the sounds are annoying lol

It works fine on both Retropie and Recalbox Check the bios you use is M5. It was why I never got to make it work before. Now it is all cool.

I still say go with the portable SSD USB sticks from Ali-Express. Faster and cheaper. Solid State Drive in the size of a USB. It's awesome.

The Retropie version is smooth as well, and has less glitches ( some games on Bactocera have disappearing polygons...unplayable )

@@farisomeragic8900 As soon as my Arcade Image is ready, i will probably share it to Arcade Punk. I tried almost every games and the result on Saturn is really smooth ( though not hires. The dreamcast /naomi/atomiswave also runs at 60fps. The new Recalbox is also very good, with almost all running at 60fps except Jaguar, and psp ( and I think I can find a way ) Sadly still no Saturn. The saturn was such an underrated system. It might be because half or more of the games were also on 32x and Ps1 later.

@@farisomeragic8900 It does work well. I get an average of 50fos with overclocking at 1.7ghz. Average 40-45 without...but a pi4 should be overclocked anyway. My pi400 is at 2ghz... As for the games that run best, All 2D games...shooters or fighters run all at 60fps. in term of 3D, Daytona, Clockwork, Gug too, Manxx TT... 50-60fps. Nights has some drops around 45fps...which is ok. I play in native res, with Perspective correction + Zfast CRT shader. I tried with 2X res, but it impacts only a little. Tasselation does drop the FPS. The only glitches I got was on Panzer dragoon. Some effects would not render. But the games are playable and very cool

You seem to think that each theme only has one style for the game list. Each theme in Batocera typically has several gamelist view styles. If you don't like the way a particular theme lists games, you can usually change it. You need to set those options in the "Theme Configuration" menu under "UI Settings". The Carbon theme for example has a ton of gamelist views: basic, grid, detailed, gamecarousel, boxes, carousel, tiles, icons. Then you have a bunch of options to customize those views even further. You should really dig deeper into the Theme Configuration" menu.

This is another image that doesn't allow access to command line, preventing me from installing scripts to get my joysticks to work. Ive downloaded many Batocera images and they are all incompatible with my joysticks and wont allow me to set them up myself which after hundreds of gig's of downloading is pretty disappointing.
