Thruhike of the Batona Trail in New Jersey. 53 miles from end to end. Around 57 miles with some side trails to Buttonwood Camp, Batsto Village, etc. Good times with Chris and Lori from LiteAF, Dutch from Dutchware, Chris AKA Pine Barrens Leather, and Big Mike. I like to call him that because of his BIG personality. Interesting trail. Great group of folks. Fun times with new friends. Check it out!

Interesting to see a through hike video of this trail. I live within maybe 7 or 8 miles of Batsto, and have been here for 38 years. But I've only hiked 2 short sections of the Batona, both within Wharton State Forest. I have been to the top of the Batsto and Apple Pie towers, but that was a long time ago. When you went from Buttonwood Hill Camp, across the road to the river, that was the Mullica River. On the other side of the river is Atlantic County. Glad you got to experience hiking through the various types of landscape in the pine barrens. Now you know how special it is here.

Yes. I love the Pine Barrons. Not only was this a great trail, but I also made some great friends on this hike. I'll be back in 2024. We're planning to run the trail to raise money for charity. Im excited to see those white cedars again!

Can’t wait to do this trail. I’m about a 20 minute drive to ongs hat trailhead. I ordered a liteaf pack since it was local (again only about 15 min to their shop) and love that they donate to the New Jersey pine lands. Thanks for the inspiration.

I have started doing the Batona Trail. But I'm doing it on my own terms. I'm just doing parts of it each time since I don't live far away. I've just been parking, hiking a few miles and then returning to my car. No overnight camping. It'll be my project all fall, winter, and spring. Thanks for the helpful vid.

@@TheUltralightMindset Well I am finally going to do it. Outdoor Vitals has a UL 100 Challenge and I am going to participate which tie in to my desire to hike 80 miles in celebration of my 80 birthday latter this year. I do have a couple of questions. How are the water sources? I am hoping I do not have to carry too much water. And I am open to any suggestions. My plan is to do a NOBO and SOBO. Unfortunately, do to lay out I will have to stay at Brendan Byrne Campground 2 nights, overall plan is that I will finish on the 7 day. Wish I could stealth camp so I could do more miles. Oh well. Thanks for your inout.

@@davidson_oldbull_sectionhiker OH man. That sounds like a great way to celebrate. It's been a few years since I hiked the Batona but I don't remember having to carry a lot of water. We hiked it in March so it was cold st night and cool during the day. I agree, it would be nice to stealth camp and have more flexibility with daily mileage. Great trail. Let me know how it goes!

Nice video, I started at the opposite end as you when I had a go at this trail and remember seeing that sign at 22:14 but I couldn’t find buttonwood hill campground it started down pouring and I got picked up off the trail at the batsto water tower. Is the sign for the camp the one at 22:14 or 24:05?
@ChristopherAddes
@ChristopherAddes 4 жыл бұрын
Also is the walk to buttonwood from the trail a road turn off or a woods walk?
@TheUltralightMindset
@TheUltralightMindset 4 жыл бұрын
Ah....yea I guess I see how that could be a little confusing. The answer is BOTH. 22:14 is when we reached the turnoff to Buttonwood and 24:05 is the same spot, but we were leaving camp. Hiking south there's a wooden "Camp" sign on a tree, right side of the BT, facing north. The spur trail to buttonwood is a dirt road/jeep trail through the woods. Same road that the chevy blazer is stuck in the video. Buttonwood camp is about 3/4 to 1 mile off the BT and sits just off an actual paved road. Hope that helps.
