African Music: "To play Batta you have to pay us N100,000," Says Mr Akeem
In Yoruba land there are various types of traditional drums -- Batta, Dundun, Aaro, Gudududu, Sakara, etc. and each drum has its own sound and rhythm.
BattaBox presenter, Timothy speaks to Mr Oloyinlapa Akeem (a professional Batta drummer) who takes us into the world of traditional and talking drums.
Mr Akeem explains and shows all the different types of drums and the sounds that they produce.
"The dundun is used to make proverbs and arrange introductions," he demonstrates.
Clad in their traditional Yoruba attire, they sing and play the talking drums as Timothy dances to the batta tunes.

In Cuba they play the ancient Bata tradition from Yoruba revolutionaries from the Island and that tradition persist in al the Yoruba groups in the Caribbean. Their bata rhythm varies a lot to the current or modern one but there are a LOT of similarities

I'm fairly ignorant of African cultures in general so this look into the how, the why, and the fun put into these traditional drums has been very enlightening. Just look at these people. The music they make is energetic and upbeat and they're having such a great time playing it.

Don't miss the magic!! Notice how the Yoruba interviewer could connect the tonal pattern of the galu dudu drum (@ 2:10+) to a phrase in his language. This is possible because the drummer is squeezing and releasing strings on the side of the drum and altering the tension of the drum head. It's how the amazing talking drum actually works!

In Yoruba it was a signature of where a person comes from. Unfortunately as Nigeria adopts more western ways people opt for Paper or even digital records instead!

At 1:43 Why didn't that talking drum take root in Brazil and Cuba? Both countries received many Yoruba slaves. I've never seen Brazilians or Cubans with that particular drum. I wonder if it was because neither group continued to speak the Yoruba language in Brazil or Cuba? So there was no way to use a talking drum without it being applied to the Yoruba language?

dont be insensitive. yoruba people can have tribal markings that are significant to our culture. it’s a precolonial aspect that is not nearly as popular anymore so it is beautiful to see he still has them and wears them beautifully.
