"Thou shalt not judge" and "Follow your conscience" but "I'll never, never keep my birds in cages". Speaks a lot about you Dr.Daniel. The biggest challenge is when we become commercially successful or face crisis we forget our farming principles. On the other hand your objectives outweight your wealthiness. Your passion is a great inspiration especially to those farmers in Africa and developing Nations. It not just important to have commercial success but we need to keep in mind the life of farm animals and their right to a good life in their life time. I would still stress barnyard poultry are a way more safe and happier than unhappy caged birds.

Nice Video Daniel . You give a fairly balanced argument for deep litter vs cages (although you are clearly biased against the battery cage system) .I agree with your assessment-Cages are more commercially viable -less labor required for maintenance, less space, easier disease control and egg collection (lower risk of damage and vices )and cleaning.I think the manure from cages is better because it’s pure and not mixed as is the case with deep litter . deep litter manure depends on what material was used initially (coffee husks/wood shavings ) and how long it spends in the chicken house as well as effects of water spillage which make it harden .It can be quite exothermic when applied directly to plants causing wilting . Having tried out both free range and deep litter ,I understand the moral dilemma with cage system . But I believe as a farmer you have to set out clear goals and follow through. Chicken should be free to roam around but we still keep them in enclosures so as to manage their production more effectively. Battery cage system takes this to an extreme many are uncomfortable with .

Iam out, i will never think of battery cage system again. The reason why i wanted it was because of easy management since i wont be at the farm 24/7, secondly the labour is way cheaper and lastly, eggs dont easily break as they just roll and boom ready for collection and also easy to clean etc...... Okay after your detailed explanation, i will never use battery system. Oh i love chicken breast but not bruised with with cages...

I have a free range/deep litter chicken farm and If you automate a lot of the feed and water requirements, it makes it easy for you to manage. Animals know how to take care of themselves if the resources are there for them. I spend about 30mins per day with a flock of 5000 broilers . Cages are convenient but also more startup costs and just cruel. You won’t have good production .
