If the test would have been conducted with a 1C discharge rate, the LiPo would have been the incontestable winner because of it's low internal resistance. What more, after years, the internal resistance of lithium batterie do not increase as much as other technologies. For those two reasons, after a while, the winner in each categories (even the price) is the LiPo for a high power device as an eBike :) Nice video, usefull informations !

This is really a good way to look at battery power. I use 18650 type cells due to there energy. Lead acid batteries can be dangerous as well. When charging they give off hydrogen gas, that can explode if there is a spark, plus they contain lots of lead and sulfuric acid, so not really the safest option. The 18650 can be dangerous, but as long as you are careful with them, they can really be useful. They are getting safer everyday and they are getting more out of them as well. I look forward to seeing just how much better they can get.

One thing you should always take into account when looking at the different batteries and the prices it the amount of cycles you will get out of them. Yes lead acid is cheaper when you only look at the initial cost but you get a lot of cycles out of them and will result in replacing them on a regular basis. Li-Ion can give you a lot of cycles depending on the quality and they have a higher DoD than most batteries thus giving you more usable energy. Lead acid typical DoD is only 50% and when discharged past this point (that you can do safely) will drastically reduce its life time and could cause permanent damage to the unit.

One glaring inaccuracy: Lead-Acid can explode catastrophically when overcharged and send shrapnel flying when they do. Also, when overdrawn they can overheat and spring a leak blowing sulphuric acid steam. They're only safe because the charging technology to safely charge them is commonplace.
@BlackCatRedScarf8 жыл бұрын
You could include de A123 LiFePO4 cells on this comparison. You should think about discharging capabilities and recharging speed too. Example: LiPo batteries offers great currents and lower voltage drop, which makes it a nice option for low weight and high power projects. Example 2: LiFePO4 A123 technology make the cells able to be charged much quicker than the others (it's not unusual to recharge at 4C or 15 minutes) and these batteries are much more safer than LiPo batteries (most of LiPo batteries are recharged at 1C without much safety nor lifespan concerns and only few higher quality and more expensive cells can handle been recharged above 1C.) Thanks for the great videos! 😉

This is because they can handle a lot of abuse regarding discharging - charging and of course they are cheaper regarding the capacity. Personally I always prefer them if weight is not a problem for the application.

Excellent basic primer but would have liked to see LifePO4 in there. One thing you forgot to factor in to your cost per mAh was cycle life. So if a LiIon batt lasts three times as long as a lead acid and possibly 50% longer than NiMh then you have to adjust your figures accordingly. I know its outside the scope of this video but even though lead acid looks good on paper, cheaper versions of lead acid are only about 70% efficient, although more expensive versions like AGM last longer and are more efficient, they still don’t rival lithium chemistries.

Best part about NiMH is the fact you can use them in almost all devices that take AA or AAA cells safely because their maximum full charge voltage is just a shade lower than a full alkaline AA or AAA cell and so they wont destroy devices that were meant for disposable cells. This saves a ton of money since I have lots of devices that use AA and AAA cells ranging from remote controls to powerful flashlights and even a few camera speedlights which eat through alkaline cells. NiMH with its tolerance of delivering their maximum rated current nets me higher performance and lower cost than disposable cells... and since they're standard AA sized cells they're better than Lithium Ion or LiPo. Reason is most devices that use lithium ion are USB charged and have internal batteries that are not removable... this is the major flaw in Lithium Ion technology, not the battery itself but the fact that most devices use fixed internal batteries and if they are removable... they're proprietary. NiMH being made commercially available before the advent of USB chargers is immune to this and this provides unbeatable battery life. Sure the energy density isn't as high as lithium... but it's also effectively infinite. It is ALWAYS faster to switch out the dead batteries for a fresh set than to recharge... especially with how many devices cannot run properly if at all while charging their batteries. If our devices used some Lithium standard like 18650 cells or anything that works that isn't proprietary, I would switch to Lithium tomorrow... well during the summer at least. My experience is that lithium ion seems to suffer more from cold weather than NiMH which usually doesn't take any permanent damage and also seems to still pump out their rated current in the cold. Then again I am testing new Panasonic brand Eneloop NiMH which are absolutely head and shoulders above the competition (any other cells made in that plant perform identically to the eneloops, its just the eneloop brand is easier to get for me than other brands).
