James Horner composed some of the best film scores ever. This may have been one of his earliest but in my opinion his finest.

James Horner.. his early works are the best.. this probably secured him the contract to score the next two star trek films..

I loved this movie! Space version of Seven samurai! Go James Horner :)

Lot of folks see this as a prelude to "Wrath of Khan". Personally, I think this one's superior; more distinctive, more memorable. Undeniably epic. They don't do it like this anymore.

This doesn't just "predict" how he was going to sound, this score is essentially a rough draft for Wrath of Khan.

Exactly ...also has some future-hints of Krull too! Fantastic soundtracks!

You can kinda hear that Horner wasn't given a large enough orchestra to work with or maybe the sound production was limited. But, I'm sure like most of the people on this movie , he was able to create something grand-scale with what he had.

Thats true and than came Star Trek II with a 92 orchestra players for him!

The horn section were clearly first year students the studio got on the cheap.
