In terms of the story for BfA, I do understand that they had books that contained really important parts and helped to establish motivations and characters. But it does REALLY frustrate me when this happens. I love reading. I read the quest texts, I read online stuff, and I love physical books. But I find it frustrating when ANY sort of medium requires you to access another medium in order to understand what is happening. When I'm watching a movie, I shouldn't have to go read a book in order to understand the movie. When reading a book, I shouldn't have to play a videogame to get it. If the books were SO important to understanding character motivations and other stuff, then why didn't they make those a part of the game? Have more quests that involved it, have NPC conversations that you can overhear, have snippets of books that you can read in-game (like they've done before). I've had a similar issue with other videogames, like FF15 having a 2 hour movie that explained the history and backstory of the characters and world.

With all intellectual property, a story needs to stand on it's own merit, even if it's an adaptation from an original work. In this case, it's the original work (the game) that lacks story. That is not acceptable. I should not have to buy other media to understand the lore of a game. This multi-media tactic is not done to give fans of different tastes something for each of them to enjoy, it's to create more shit for them to buy in order to be satisfied. There is nothing wrong with making a book of the expansion's story, but it can only be supplemental, not a replacement. If you can't fit that in your game, then make your game less lore-centric.

Class design and systems teams failed this expansion really hard. Moving from Legion to BFA with almost zero class changes, putting GCD on cooldowns and reusing the same talents which noone liked was an extremely terrible decision. Titanforging lottery system was replaced with another RNG system which is even more random, you cannot "target" farm corruption items because its all random proc... and ontop of that 420 blue item with tier 3 corruption is giving me more damage than a 475 item without corruption which is stupid. Designing classes around class fantasy and limiting them around that fantasy sounds good on paper but in reality its extremely annoying to play. As a Death Knight they limited our mobility because class fantasy but in return they balanced our damage around everyone else which lead the class to be extremely slow and doing the same damage as the rest plus not bringing anything unique. I dont get why they refuse to make essences account wide, farming the same thing for weeks on multiple alts is major failure. PVP/PVE Seasons in a MMORPG game is another mindblowing decision. This is not Fortnite or any other BR game where new seasons are fine. Spending months to get the best gear just to replace it within a few days after the new season start is really demotivating to play and farm gear. Overall i want to forget about this expansion, even WOD was more enjoyable to me than this. I really, really hope they listen to feedback and make Shadowlands different, otherwise WoW might finally die after another "BFA like" expansion.

"ontop of that 420 blue item with tier 3 corruption is giving me more damage than a 475 item without corruption which is stupid. NIX i agree with you on all of your points, couldn’t have written it better myself. Can’t say i agree with this hirumadex guy at all, he rated BFA far too high, almost 7/10 really? Rose-tinted goggles much, but I guess that is his subjective opinion. I really hope they turn things around in Shadowlands, but the fact that they won’t bring unique class (tier) sets back is already very disheartening. The whole reasoning behind it is just an excuse for saving costs because they can’t pay artists enough to come up with good looking gear, for each class. Designing armor sets themed towards the current raid tier? Yeah, I get that. None of the new “sets” are transmog worthy, or worth grinding for. What a huge fail. I’m definitely not prepurchasing ever again for a digital copy (that fake scarcity of supply). Blizzard needs to prove that they have learnt their lesson, and adding countless of unique mounts to the store/ behind a 6 month subscription plan just shows what kind of scum they really are. I could keep going but i’d rather stop here.

The only thing I would bring up is how they kinda killed heirlooms even for questing, normal appropriate level enemies will take me down to like 30% health, and they broke heirlooms entirely for 110-120 so that they're just entirely worse all round. Considering how expensive they are I would have knocked gear down another point for that, however it could also have been a side effect of scaling that they may never have fixed(dunno I just dropped the expansion entirely). I don't know if I could disagree with you more about outside extra sources, they should be extra, people got Illadin and Arthas in Warcraft 3 from that game and didn't need any kind of extra stuff to get Wrath of the Lich king provided they had played through previous games, any books and outside stuff should be supplementary to that not essential to that you should want to read the books to know more, not have to read the books because that's where the actual meat is.

Paladins: almost all specs lost their fluidity compared to Legion. Only may a highly geared, BiS traited ret pally with rank3 essences can come close to what we had with the Ashbringer. Glimmer saved Holy though I enjoyed it in 8.0 as well but the healing capabilities were subpar compared to Legion - in raids. In dungeons, Holy can be extremely powerful and surpass even a disc priest if handled with skill. Now I am able to enjoy Retribution again after a decent grind thanks to the Essence + Corruption combos. 8.0 theorycrafting was a fun until you had to pray for world boss loot. Warlocks: look what they did to my poor boy. I was a Demonology main. The spec transitions from WoD to Legion were awesome and while Affliction retained the better changes and got new ones to bolster their capability, Destruction was not really good until the Essences came to the picture and while Demo got a little bit of highlight in 8.1 due to the azerite trait changes, Affliction still held the higher hand and only got dethroned by Destro in 8.3 - and 8.3 Destro is broken. Sargeras may see my soul that I tried really hard in every patch to play demo to the level I was the only one in 8.0 after A LOT of farming (spamming Island Expeditions to be ahead of the curve, targeting gears in M+, begging for Uldir loot, etc) with decent numbers. My titanforget Azurethos' Singed Plumage might have helped a lot in hindsight. Hunters. I will never forgive that they killed Marksmanship. With some farming, theorycrafting and loot targeting it was decent enough but BM always had a higher hand due to lower skillcap (basically you only need to manage frenzy which is _waaay more_ easier in 8.3 due to the essences and corruptions) and kinda brainless in my opinion. But good numbers equals to Mythic raid spots. Shamans: oof. 8.0 was sad. Nothing could've been done. I always wanted to prepare an Elemental shaman 'just in case' I get bored of warlocks and Blizzard heard the playerbase and delivered really good changes to the specs. I got exploded to the top of the dps charts and had fun. That, also, needed a lot of farming and stuff. But after 8.1 I didn't really play them becasue I had so much work to do in 8.2 on my main (warlock). You may see a lot of 'theorycrafting'. I always loved to make personal BiS charts, ranking the dungeons (if it worth to spam M+), combining traits and later essences to see what works and what not. In most 'simming' you can't really equate how fast a raiding scene changes. If you gotta move a lot then your simmed Patchwerk numbers means less if you are a caster. If there's 2+ constant targets in the raid then something else will happen (Destro gots ahead of Demo and Affli). If you have to deal with a lot of downtime then the dot specs will come ahead slighly. I am 'proud' that I was able to make Demonology work well in 8.0 contrary to the fact that they were absolutely horrible in sims.

I consider myself a guy who's into the story in WoW, I read the extra materials, etc... and I still think the story of BfA was bad, overall. There's a lot that seems like it comes out of nowhere - for example, I reached the end of the Alliance storyline where Jaina summons the fleet, and I went "Wait, what? The amulet is magic? What?" because if the information was there it was so badly presented that even trying to pay attention, it didn't get across. Similarly, Saurfang and Anduin's exchange about "why did you spare my life" - I was like "when did that happen?" because, in game, it didn't. It happened in the BfA intro cinematic, and by the point of playing through the in-game version of the battle of Lordaeron a few times I had forgotten about it. Even then, it was months before I figured out that that was what Anduin was referring to. And even then, the obvious question is - why would Saurfang kill you, Anduin? You're not a threat, and you're the Alliance leader most likely to convince his people to surrender at some point. Keeping you alive is just good tactical sense. Maybe it's not so much "the story" I'm complaining about, but the direction. Like if the script for a movie was good, but then the director and the editor were bad. For example, following a quest where the player rampages gleefully through an enemy army on top of a laser dinosaur with a cutscene where it's all "ooh we're losing so bad, so sad". Which happened. Separately, those things are fine, but putting them right next to each other? Not fine. And that sort of thing is part of the skill of presenting a story, and something that can and should be criticized.

Set items wasn't just "Hunter looking set x 21 times" the sets where thematicly made for the raid like the current raid gear only each class got their own spin on that theme so the art team wouldn't run out of ideas for class based sets since they would be thematiclly tied to the raid that drops them to some degree. The major problem is some classes get quite underwhelming looking sets most of the time, mainly hunters and shamans, while others, warrior/mage/priest/pally, mostly gets great looking sets. And most Azerite traits sucks, most of them being passive and a lot of class specific ones not even being better then neutral ones means you have the same shit as someone else as another class just becouse X trait is so much better then some class specific ones, and the good ones got nerfed a few times.

The problem with outside sources is that you're money gated from lore when you're already paying to play the game. Those who can't also afford the extra stuff but want to know about it are stuck waiting for channels like nobbel to get the extra story. It should be an open database on their site open to people who are subbed to the game, not full novel prices.

Agreed. Makes no sense to me. If it was a different type of game, take league for example where lore is literally the least of importance, sure pay for lore. But wow is, arguably, literally a lore based game. Itd be like when single player (story driven) games put vital lore or even full blown endings in paid dlc. Just doesn't feel right.

Pros: - Artwork is beautiful as always - Quite some of the music is breathtaking - Flashier than ever - Many allied races, the most in any of the expansions - Many ways to level alts, with zones scaling in level - Transmogging possibilities are at the peak at the moment, a ton of quality of life features for it were added in BfA Cons: - Much grindier than any other expansion - 2 or maybe even 3 expansions stuffed into one - Major villains got only a single patch.... - Alts are easy to LEVEL only, but not to gear up ( see contra #1) - Classes are balanced and not at the same time, some essences and corruptions are so OP that there are... - Too many hotfixes to kill the fun. - PvP is getting more and more abandoned in a PvP xpac... - Aside from raids and M+, it cascades towards an online singleplayer - You are treated as a hero FROM THE BEGINNING, killing the actual feeling of progressing, which would be most satisfying. Yuck!

Really well done video. I stopped playing BFA shortly after release (no reason besides life) and started back up a little before 8.2 came out. Prior to that I never raided or did mythics so all of that was completely new to me. I enjoyed the expansion for the most part. Raiding EP for my first raid ever was pretty fun. I liked the Azshara fight a lot. I do wish getting alts caught up was easier. I main a ret paladin, but currently learning how to heal with resto Druid and I’m not looking forward to grinding essences out again. Gearing as been a pain with corrupted pieces, but I like the idea behind it. Just feels bad when my 420 infinite stars sims higher than heroic raiding gear with no corruption. And simming every piece of gear can get obnoxious. I’ve gotten to a point where I’m just collecting pieces of corruption because I cleansed pieces I shouldn’t have in the beginning.

I liked BfA. The zones for alliance and horde had really cool themes and aesthetics, the story of each zone was compelling, islands and warfronts were a fun little casual side activity, I played a bunch of alts and was never that bothered by Azerite gear, Nazjatar and Mechagon were both super unique and getting to swap between the two made doing dailies feel like less of a grind. Also we could actually fly in all of the end game zones cough Argus cough. Honestly it was nice to come out of the "save the universe from the biggest bad in all WoW lore" and back to smaller self contained stories.

Despite joining in recent times I consider myself good at knowing lore but far from an expert, I know about big events but not a lot of the smaller ones so I knew who N'Zoth was but I hated how we dealt with him. I loved the final fight but the idea behind it was one of the only things I hated about the raid.

I'm so glad more people are starting to see what they were going for with Saurfang's story. It wasn't him suddenly changing his idea of honor for one singular act, it was an old soldier who thought he would have his warrior's death by now. He went along with everything but the tree burning wasn't just where he drew the line on what he'd do, but it was the point where he began to even question his own past actions. Saurfang's story has easily been on of my favorite stories in WoW but I guess if you didn't read A Good War you might miss a lot of his inner thoughts on what was going on.
@desertguy13624 жыл бұрын
Yeah 100%. Saurgang back story reminded me of the movie "The Last Samurai" when you have an ideology for so long it is the only way you think and only when one lives the live of his/her counter ideology over time they become self aware of their past actions their whole life was basically brainwashed from the environment they grew up in. It is a subject that is extremely hard to pull off well and requires very good writing and acting to make the reader/audience realize the same thought process but if done well make a true warriors tell.

She pretty much immediately brings the whole quality of the song down right in the beginning.

@Dottoman There are a lot of "professional singers"-they tend to often sound the same and are too keenshow off their vocal range at every opportunity. It can be tedious to listen to. Laura Bailey does an excellent job of conveying the emotional resonance of that song, despite her technical limitations. You might consider that half the most celebrated vocalists of the last half century have no more technical competence than Bailey, but found a large following because they were unique or passionate.

Good things 1. Art as always 2. Raids : raids have always been pretty good even in wod. 3. Dungeons are really good aswell Bad things 1. GCD change ( In my opinion, it has to be the worst or one of the worsts change in the whole game's history, everything feels slow and clunky now). 2. Class design : i remember in legion i used to have so many alts, but now i barely have alts because classes are not as fun to play, and a lot of classes are just the same as legion but whitout the cool powers of the artifact weapon 3. Azerite gear: just a disaster, i don't have to explain 4. Tier sets: again they just changing the game so much from what its supposed to be, this and the gcd change are the worst changes in the history of wow. 5. Gear: this expansion there is really not that much reward to raid because there are no tier sets and you can just spam mythic +10 and you pretty much have full heroic gear 6. Essences: i mean this pisses me off because its not account bound anf the grind is pretty long wich is fine, but its so ALT unfriendly 7. Azerite and essence grind 8. Island expeditions feel boring and repetitive 9. Warfro't being only pve, if it was pvp it would have been awesome 10. Lore : iam really upset that sylvanass just one shotted the Lich King( i am aware from a lore standpoint it might make sense) but still its just so weird seing bolvar getting rekt even whitout landing a single hit on sylvanass. 11. Also sylvanass is apperantly invincible and we never know what she is up to, she is protected by plot armor and she is always ahead wich is cool, but its been like this the whole xpac

As someone that joined late I got the best of all worlds. Neck was trivially easy to level for gearing and essence slots, Azerite traits were actually pretty interesting (Fury popping Reck+BotE to near guarantee huge bleed applications, Prot Warr getting insane on-demand burst with Avatar, Streaking Stars on Balance having massive DPS and rotation implications, Deadshot hitting like an absolute truck on Outlaw when procs line up), Essences were super cool (Vision of Perfection major effect needs to be a legendary or riot, BotE feels amazing to press), as much as Corruption has serious issues and was implemented at launch as poorly as nearly everything else in this expansion but Titanforging is dead and I hope it stays dead forever and never sees the light of day again. Sans issues with corruption, gearing in 8.3 has come a long long way.

I think the story telling and lore was A+ in this one. I loved the Saurfang and Jaina stories, they managed to reintroduce and reshape Thrall to more resemble his pre-cata days in a way that felt natural, and I love the direction the night elves are going now. My only negatives for it were that they should have at least hinted at Sylvannas’s potential plans to help players understand her newfound powers, and I think the brevity of our encounter with N’zoth after years of buildup was hugely disappointing. Still, 9/10 on that front for me. It makes me really look forward to shadowlands.

I would give gearing a 6/10 if they have made Mechagon items gearing more avaliable and viable at end game. Mechagon's gearing adds a lot of combination to the table but sadly it is hard to grind them in m+, and it would be better if you used that time on somethingelse. I wish they could add something like a 'wishlist' for M+, it allow you to drop an wished item from any M+ dungeons, rather than the specific ones.

The good: The zones. Easily the best feature of this expansion, Nazmir is so good it's become a contender for alltime favorite wow zone. Going over to the opposing faction zones, especially early on when you don't have outposts yet, felt exciting and actively hostile. Couldn't follow the roads because of guards, had to climb a lot of hills and hostile terrain because of it. Was just a great time. The bad: the war campaign specifically (Horde perspective). Most other parts of the story were kind of cool, especially Nazmir during the Uniting Zandalar part, was so much fun, learning about g'huun and whatnot. Invasions were cool, just a lot of cool stuff, but my god that war campaign was awful. I genuinely felt like I was just being dragged all over the place by people with conflicting agendas without even a shred of player agency. But the quests were "mandatory" so I went out and did the things that made absolutely no sense for my character to do. It sucked a lot and is the reason I actually quit the game for over a year.

Questing: I think it felt better as a fresh character than Legion, but not quite as good as WoD (WoD being the best leveling experience in WoW history). Some zones were better than others, but all in all, really quality questing content, and everything had a satisfying conclusion (outside of Drustvar since Gorak Tul just kinda went *poof*). Gear design: I like Azerite armor as a concept (and as it's been since 8.1); I think it would have been much better received if you only needed to grind neck levels to unlock the +5 ilvl bonus rather than constantly unlock the same trait on a direct upgrade. I also didn't mind the lack of set bonuses, since the main problem I had with Legion was "Hey! I got a mega-titanforged piece of loot with amazing stats...but it's in the same slot as a BiS legendary/tier piece." Essences are great design, IMO...just make it so unlocking rank 3 on a character unlocks rank 3 on your account once you get rank 1 on an alt (i.e., if you get, say, rank 3 Condensed Life Force on your main, getting rank 1 on an alt will give you the full rank 3). World design: stunning. It feels less theme-parky than WoD and Legion; there's less hard transition between zones and a bit more flow. There are some swamps in Vol'dun and Zuldazar on the border with Nazmir. The mountains of Kul'tiras tie the 3 zones together while still having some unique features (SSV's farmlands, Drustvar's dark forests, Tiragarde's openness). Dungeons: I'm a moderately high-end M+ runner (run a few timed +10-+15s a week), that's what I'm basing this off. Everything but Shrine Of The Storm was really well-done. Shrine seems to be the "no matter the affixes, this place is going to suck HARD" dungeon, like Cathedral and Seat were in Legion. I kinda wish we got a couple of new dungeons with 8.2/8.3 (to break the monotony a bit...Mechagon was nice as a parallel to Karazhan, but there was no new dungeon to progress the story like in Legion). I enjoyed the seasonal affixes as a mechanic, too. Really solid all around, and Awakened is the best seasonal affix so far. Raids: Uldir was really cool, even if Zul trash was the worst trash since AQ40 Mindslayer packs and G'huun kinda sucked; B. BfDA is one of the best raids ever...on par with WoD raids, A+. Crucible: It was okay? C. Eternal Palace: I enjoyed it, and most of the encounters were really well done, but nothing groundbreaking; B+. Ny'alotha: I still haven't cleared heroic or attempted mythic, but everything looks and feels incredible and the bosses on normal are excellent; A. Islands and Warfronts are like MoP scenarios: good ideas on paper, but either not rewarding enough or it's just a better use of your time to ignore everything else and just go for the goal. Visions: YES!!! Challenging solo content! Rewarding but not quite NECESSARY to do the most ball-bustingly hard content to progress your character. I mean, once I'm in full corrupted gear with a rank 15 cape and maxed out memento research, sure, it'll be kinda easy, but still fun (like...risky and demanding challenge content with good rewards).

This is true i boosted a toon in 8.3 with the boosted gear and flying i was able to do mutliple zones in a day. Its very underwhelming drust was cool as alliance though

Would love to see you talk more about Disc / Shadow Priests. I quit back in Cata and was wooed back to BFA solely for my Shadow Priest

I only started playing WoW back in February or March, so i only experienced the last year of BfA, but i actually really enjoyed it. I still choose to level through BfA for my alts alot.

I understand that they removed tier sets but i like farming transmog, so i would have raided in bfa if they had tier sets or atleast class spesific set but the armor type tier sets where just awfull in my opinion (except for the mythic ones). I just wished they remade old tier sets like the tos sets. :(

I really liked your review of BfA and i agree with most of your points. Finally someone who doesnt outright call it a bad expansion. I loved many parts about it as a mythic raiding Holy Pala. My main dislikes were only AP grinding and a bit too much rng. I like the corruption system though, but not only in a good way. Stupid fun i'd say.

This expansion I have met/lost SO many WoW friends in such a short amount of time and I think it was due to how bad it was. So many people quitting left and right and guilds falling apart ever since Uldir.

I don't expect the same people to play for 15+ years. Meet a new crew and you'll have a blast.

@@immortalzealot9725 no like. I've met so many brand new people and then seen them quit shortly after because they hated BFA. I've gone through 4 guilds disbanding due to people quitting. Something very unique for me to this expansion alone and I've played since Vanilla.

I play disc as well and I love it, I feel your pain with the nerfs but you can understand why, my. Obly worry now is, disc has made any other healing spec feel Incredibly boring for me, feels like I'm just watching health bars go up and down. Where's disc you really feel like your planning your healing, at the end of 8.2 I found it fun trying to get to match the tanks dps. So far in 8.3 my dmg feels incredibly low, but I'm hoping it's judst the fact disc scales incredibly well so we might be up there in damage again

*Raids* - Always great. Best casual raiding experience since WoD for me. *Dungeons* - Love M+ still, greatest addition ever. Gearing from it felt great every patch despite azerite gear and AP bullshit and affixes kept me coming back weekly. *Art* - Every frame a fucking painting. Find any corner of this game and you could immerse yourself in it with how realized it is. You may not like its particular aesthetic but it is absolutely refined. *Music* - I love the music but I usually have it turned off as well as sound effects because they're so loud and distracting when talking with others (Shift + M and Shift + S to toggle them on and off is amazing!) and I was never taken out of the experience by music and sound design, which meant they absolutely did their job. *Class design* - Legion to BFA felt like SHIT. In Legion we were badasses pumping out millions of damage with high APM rotations and so many classes really felt amazing. Immediately BfA felt slow and clunky just in comparison, not even to mention the stat squish to make us feel like we were Level 50s with toy swords... This happens every expansion, but the power level gains in Legion were so massive that BfA's starting state was a huge hit. As someone who mains 3 classes and has alts of every other class I got a real feel to the struggles some main classes felt, and in retrospect it started and ended with Azerite. Hopefully they've learned their lesson... Overall the class designs felt better with higher stat totals in Nya gear than they did in say Uldir. That again comes back to Azerite but still. *Expansion Features* - I didn't hop on the Islands farm train, but they fulfilled their role to me as casual, repeatable, lucrative and rewarding fun content for solo and small groups. I REALLY hope they add something similar to this in the future, always having something to do with friends as a quick pick up was fantastic. Warfronts were dumb and a waste of time, cool but a waste of time. Allied races tho. Hold my beer while I level up 5 new toons rq. World quests making a return to the grind really didn't bother me that much, I just had to choose 1 main at the start of the expansion and that was the only one I got to play until this patch where I can actually catch up since the patch is going to last a year. I just sorta accepted my fate and embraced it. I thought Legion was bad for alts. hooo boy. *Other stuff* - I like pet battles and this expansion was full of em. The mini dungeons and all the new critters released every patch gave me something quick and fun to do solo whenever. The grind for flying felt like shit this xpack, mostly because I got really bored of 8.2 lands and had 0 desire to gear alts. And the rep grind at the beginning was automatically done for me because I was preparing a raid-ready main. It was mostly the 8.2 slog for me. That said I appreciate the "Timeless Isle" patches Blizz pumps out every xpack, but Mechagon/Nazjatar just felt like the barriers to flying rather than the fun of exploring new zones. Guess I was just too jaded to appreciate them honestly. I ended up writing a lot and I'm sorry, this just was gonna be bullet points but I ended up elaborating a lot. Thanks for the vid hiruma, made me reflect on my own experiences with Bfa critically.

Queen Azshara was taken by N'zoth and he tried to torture her for being too strong that she could ignore his whispers. But Deathwing gave in to him. Does that mean Azshara is stronger than an aspect?

Thank you for the thoughtful and even-handed approach. I agree with most of your sentiments - except that I would argue that your assessment of classes based on your experiences was a bit narrow. I played a lot of disc and some shadow in BFA and it was indeed fun and took quite a bit of skill. My other two main specs from Legion (frost mage and holy priest) lost so much depth that was never recovered after the loss of the Legion artifact that I can’t say that class design was a top feature in BFA for me. Perhaps in the future you could harvest opinions from friends you trust who play other specs to get a more well-rounded approach. Overall, great video. I like how you tried to be honest and ignore a lot of the hype/negativity.

My favorite part is that at the beginning I thought it was alliance and horde battling for rule over azeroth and turned into an actual battle for azeroth

On the note of infinite progression systems; I think they are great for the long-term health of a game in most cases...if we're talking about a game with a significant amount of meaningful singleplayer content. The issue with infinite progression in MMOs is the competitive aspect; you feel pressured to keep up the pace with other players in order to stay relevant in high-end content. It's that pressure that leads people to burn themselves out. If WoW had more end-game singleplayer stuff to do (i.e. Visions is a great example of something you can challenge yourself with in solo content), then infinite progression wouldn't be as nasty of a concept. But the fact that you're forced to play/compete with other players for the best rewards will always restrict infinite progression and prevent its success.

I ended up playing a Priest aswell, after going through Warrior, Mage, Shaman and Druid. Priest really is the only class that i found fun to play.
