Just recently had my selection between these two vehicles. I thoroughly test drove both. I think I might be one of the VERY FEW in the world who preferred the STI. Something about it made me smile slightly more than the CTR. Both vehicles are great and appreciate both. Excellent AWD Boxer Rumble Aftermarket support is enormous Steering feel More of an old-school "RAW" feeling Prefer analog gauges over 'Playstation/Xbox' digital gauges in CTR Color scheme (I got the Hyper.Blue) Prefer less aggressive bolstering on seats Just my .02

I have the fk8 type R and have driven the wrx sti. The Subaru has an amazing old school feel, amazing 4wd, not the easiest clutch on the planet but great for enthusiasts. The CTR is amazing, less lag, miles cheaper to run as well (the STI fuel consumption is dreadful in comparison to the modern hot hatches, and generally cheaper to maintain than the sti too). Overall, the STI is a niche car which will appeal to the few remaining old school enthusiasts, but the CTR is the overall better car and easier to live with

I used to own a 2015 WRX STI and traded it in for the Type R. I only miss 4 things: Allwheel launches, the boxer sound and the feel of the hydraulic power steering and the defined bite of the clutch. Everything else is better in the Type R IMO. Better engine, better transmission, better seats, better electronics and driver assistance systems (mind you, German Type Rs get top of the line Civic specs). The Type R is quiter on the Autobahn and takes way less fuel just cruising. Oh and the Hoda didn't break down on me twice within 10K miles. Yeah I'm still salty about it. STI was fixed under warranty (together about 15.000€ in parts and labor on the new motors) but it just didn't feel the same after. You start to question every little quirk and noise. And the noise of a loose rod rattling on the crank still haunts me in my dreams. I had to get rid of it at that point and do not regret getting the Type R at all. Especially since it's so much cheaper...

@Mathieu Morin Pretty much the unluckiest person, I guess. Everyone at Subaru and every dealer/service partner I dealt with had rarely seen an STi break down this way. I loved the car and always treated it nicely. It was driven hard at times but was always given enough time to warm up and cool down, service was done generous and only high quality liquids were used. I did not cheap out. Also notice that I don't say STIs suck or they are unreliable. Just that my personal experience with one was not the greatest. Big difference. However I still like the CTR better overall but I would have never even test driven a CTR if the STI hadn't broken down twice and I would still be driving the STI today and I'd be happy doing so.

Wait. You think the STi has turbo lag? It literally has one of the smallest and fastest spooling turbos on any production car. Here's the thing. People get confused when it comes to the STi's acceleration, because of how smooth it is. I have seen countless people reviewing cars say even though the STi accelerated faster than the other car, it felt like it accelerated slower, because the acceleration is so smooth it doesn't feel like you're going fast. The STi's are at full boost at like 3,000 RPM, maybe 3,500 in the newer models. If you're trying to do a full out acceleration below 4,000 RPMS, you're not driving any cars properly. I've owned my own shop for 18 years, and build track cars from everything from old school muscle, European, to import tuners. The STi has the best starting platform out of any 4cyl import. The reason I don't compare it to cars like the Stinger, is because those cars, as in the top models, have way bigger engines, and the most important part, more cylinders. I'd still take an STi over a GT2 Stinger any day of the week. There's literally stock block STi's running 9 second 1/4 mile times. People that don't know any better think their engines are weak, when they are way stronger than other engines out there. The whole ringland thing wasn't because of weak ringlands. Actually, the ringlands were the strongest out of almost all production cars in the world. What had the ringlands failing was detonation, causing 2 detonation per combustion stroke. 1 was proper det, and the other happened mid cylinder and at an angle, causing the piston to get pushed into the side wall, rather than being forced straight down. I've personally seen Type R's get walked by STi's from a roll, and obliterated from a dig. The Type R's run the 1/4 in 13.9, at best, with a 102.5 trap. Even the newer heavier STi's run the 1/4 in 13.3 at 105. The older 04-05 STi's with a really good driver ran the 1/4 in 12.8 at 105, or with decent drivers between 13.0-13.1 at 104-105. Most comparisons done usually are by biased people, or someone that sucks at driving an AWD car. Even on a road course, the STi with a proper driver will eat up the Type R. However, if you have an everyday driver behind the wheel, or someone not familiar with a sticky AWD car, the Type R will eat up the STi. From the factory, the WRX and STi are made for offroad racing, and not racing on super gripy asphalt. So, in order to drive them fast on asphalt, you have to know how to break it loose a bit in the corners. Most cars now days are built to do everything for you, rather than the driver being in control. The STi, while they started to give more driver assist features, are driver controlled cars. You get the first STi's in the states, as in the 04-05 model, and that's the closest you'll get to complete driver control, just like the old McLaren F1, except obviously with a smaller engine and not as much power. Also, if you're in north America, and that is supposed to be a US Spec STi, I have bad news for you. They didn't make the US Spec STi in the bugeye form. So, the car you are driving is a modified WRX that is made to appear as an STi. In fact, there are zero left hand drive bugeye STi's in the entire world. In those year models, which was 02 and 03, they only made bugeye STi's in other countries, and they were all right hand drive. Someone lied to you. But, I believe you showed 2 different Subaru's in the video. But, like I said, the newer STi's are heavier, but still trap the same speed as the older one's, just about 0.2-0.3 seconds slower in acceleration. I'll take this "review" for what it is, which is a novice comparing two cars and not really knowing what they are talking about. Don't take it as an insult. Even popular car reviewers like motortrend and car and driver suck at reviewing cars because they have drivers who just flat out don't know how to drive certain types of cars. I even consider them novices in the car world, because they base things from their results, rather than results that happen when a proper driver is behind the wheel.

The type R's numbers are all over the place on 0-60, looking online you can find numbers anywhere from 4.8 secs to 5.9 secs. The launch would be tricky on the CTR considering it's front wheel drive. STI should be faster in 0-60 regardless but the type R tends to be quicker in 1/4 mile considering it keeps power throughout the rev range.

AWD is good to have in situations when you need it. STI seems to be more customizable. Gives owners their own special touch... no two are alike. Definitely better sounding exhaust/engine. The STI would sell better than CTR since they are more available. In addition the dealers are marking up the price which may impact sells negatively. Now the CTR is probably more reliable. Better looking (in my opinion). More versatile being a hot hatch... the red seats look way better! Infotainment system is probably better from what I hear Subaru needs to improve their set up. I traded in 18 sti for my CTR. I understand everything you said in the video. In terms of driving dynamics and performance I prefer the CTR as it is easier to drive fast and much more nimble. It is also a much better as a daily. I do have some things I miss tho. The noise and vibration of the boxer engine is just something I can't get on any other car. The rawness of it is just so special, although that's what makes it such a terrible daily car lol Recaro seats on the STI is actually really nice. I personally prefer that over my CTR seats. The reason honda will always make better sport cars and engines than subaru is because Honda was the first to pioneer the motorcycle engine . The first complete motorcycle, with both the frame and engine made by Honda, was the 1949 D-Type, the first Honda to go by the name Dream. Honda Motor Company grew in a short time to become the world's largest manufacturer of motorcycles by 1964. ... Its chain-driven rear wheels pointed to Honda's motorcycle origins. Unlike Honda... Toyota ,mazda , hyndai , kia , need to bring in Bmw, subaru, and yamahah to help build a proper engine or transmission . A prime example is the new supra , the transmission is practically BMW, the celica GTS yamaha helped with that engine as well. , Scion FRS

Why do you say that Honda makes "Sports Cars"? They don't actually except for a few limited production vehicles here and there that are cancelled in a few years. They can't give away the new NSX. Honestly if you wanted to be a "Sports Car Company" you would always make a sports car and keep that name going where by it creates a brand. Porche, Corvette, Mustang, Camaro, BMW M. Do you ever see a Honda "Sports Car" for sale on Mecum Auctions??? 10 years from now you won't be able to find a nice low mileage Stock Type R and that is because nobody ever associated that name with something that endures the test of time. I have recently had to make this decision and the STI was the choice for me. The reason i chose the STI was due to the feel of the car and the fact that the mechanical feeling of the car cant be beat with so many cars going to electronic steering. If i could have the "RAW" feeling in the CTR i would pick it all day. but when driving the STI it pushes the driver skill to get the most out of it. Just test driving both is really not enough to get the feel for the STI or the CTR. 2 months of driving the STI and it feels like a completely different car than when i first drove it. Main pro for the STI is the steering hands down. (also i know since the engine is old and has a lot of Research and development behind it modding the STI will be a breeze and parts will be cheaper.) Main pro for the CTR everything else is great but the steering. CTR would be great if you don't prefer heavy steering all the time. the CTR comfort etting makes turning and steering like a video game maybe easier. both great cars and manual transmission cars should be supported to show people still want them.

Sti. Cant drive the civic in the snowy mountain roads without chains or cables, and they dont make Subies put them on. Its one thing to drive in Nebraska where its flat. But the mountains here, awd is superior in hilly curvy roads, snow and ice. Not to mention rain, dirt, etc. And they are incredibly safe. I like the analog guages better too. Saying the sti hasnt changed the engine is stupid. Also, its like complaining Porche hasnt changed its engine deisng, its a boxer, the fact the design is simple makes it easy to work on. 20 minutes you can pull the motor. Sti has a stiffer suspension than the R. It's designed for track and rally.

I have a new STI and I completely agree the Type R is ahead of the game except I live in the the rocky mountains & Subaru AWD kills Type R. Plus if you have kid's or have 4 people in the car the STI trunk is way better than the Type R hatch. That's why you really cannot have an opinion based video for everyone especially someone worried about track performance when everyone's lifestyle is really diverse.

Constructive Criticism. You didn't start talking for two minutes into the video. The edits waiting until that point were not cool. Needs more cinematic shots of the cars on the outside that you talk over in that intro. Video quality was meh, shots in the car were shaky. Did you stabilize in post production? Microphone quality, please find a good audio recording solution! Honestly, watch Gears and Gasoline, Dustin Williams, and take some notes on their shots, quality, and edits. I think you have potential and I'd love to see another channel doing stuff like this, but if you want to reach 50,000 subs your quality will have to change. Best of luck to you, thanks for making this video.

Who buys a performance car to drive it like a Prius!... Who wants to drive a silenced sport car! ... A truly sport car has to have power plus a mean sound... That civic is mute!... The Sti you were comparing in this video was the cheapest one... You should of compared that Civic to the Limited Edition STI with Recaro Seats and some more goodies than that Base model you used!... And one more thing, you are wrong by saying that the civic is faster than the STI... Civic Type R 0-60 = 5.8sec while WRX STI 0-60 = 4.5sec .... The STI retains its value better than the Civic, and it is also better looking... That Type R's back is an eye sore...

I have an STI. I hate the rumble. In fact, the unequal length header sucks ass. Throw in an equal length header with a tune and the powerband will change completely, even with a stock downpipe. 301whp easily attained. But no, 5hp gain and still with unequal length headers for 2018. All the rumble fuckbois think I'm dumb.

On dry road/track a Type R will destroy an STI in all areas except launch. In wet weather/snow the STI will beat the Type R. I own both so I'm not biased, they are both great cars but CTR is the better performer in most situations. The CTR, handles better, is lighter, faster and even has more downforce. Feels more glued to thr road than the STI. 130mph+ in my STI is kind of sketchy... In the Type R you feel planted like a rock at speed.
