The series concludes with Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House and the surrender of the western Confederate Army to Sherman in North Carolina in the spring of 1865. I lived with the Wilderness Batterfield at my backdoor. This land is swampy with very thick brush. Just imagining a battle in this area is incredible.

Abraham Jasper McCall was my Great-Great-Uncle. He served in the Confederate States Army, Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate States of America (CSA). He enlisted as Private, Company E, 49th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry on May 10, 1862. He was elected Jr. 2nd Lieutenant on December 24, 1862; promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on February 2, 1863; promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 28, 1863; killed at Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia on May 6, 1864. G.M., BT3, USN; HSC, USCG, (Ret.)

There is a nice 1/2 mile walking trail at one section of the Wilderness Battlefield. Has a nice monument to the Vermont unit. Can still see the trenches made by the soldiers

I live in Columbus Ohio. A large Army base & POW camp, during the war. Most people still don't know anything about it. A Confederate Cemetery with 2260 soldiers is all that remain.

Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House have taught future officers fire and maneuver lessons. Despite technological advances, our young officers will face challenges in 2024 and beyond, including knowing the enemy's location and attacking with limited visibility. Approach to the Spotsylvania battlefield on May 8-10 includes critical actions often overlooked compared with the savage, close fighting of 12 May. JEB Stuart's battlefield management of horse artillery and MG Anderson's approaching infantry at Laurel Hill and Spindle Farm is a classic combined arms battle.

Lee was the better tactician, but Grant was the better strategist.

Grant never could catch Lee. The Rebs couldn't replace their troops. Grant could. Lincoln after Gettysburg had a strategy of attrition. He told Grant to go for it.
