I believe that there is a lot of material for new tv series regarding the Balkan conflicts and Bulgarian history. Netflix or HBO can make a masterpiece, following the history of these lands. Bulgarian lands are really complex and the drama here is 100% guaranteed. And like in "Vikings", the early Bulgarian history has gods and believes which are in confrontation with the Christian religion. There are glorious victories and unthinkable defeats. The outcome from all actions is absolutely dramatical. And there are a lot of legends and persons which deserve a TV show production.

I've often thought largely the same things as well. And not just about our country, but this whole region in general. Byzantine history, in particular, is an even better, truly excellent source for a movie or, better yet, a series. For example, when I was reading Michael Psellos, especially the part about Basil II, I thought "Damm, with a bit of skill, this could be made just as interesting as Game of Thrones" (that's while GoT was still good, of course). Respectively, the medieval Balkans in general and also much of Europe during the Early Middle Ages are highly underrepresented, while having quite a lot of potential. The same goes for much of the rest of the world as well.

Bulgaria emerged as Byzantium's chief antagonist to its north, resulting in several wars. The two powers also enjoyed periods of peace and alliance, most notably during the Second Arab Siege of Constantinople, where the Bulgarian army broke the siege and destroyed the Arab army, thus preventing an Arab invasion of Southeastern Europe. Byzantium had a strong cultural influence on Bulgaria, which also led to the eventual adoption of Christianity in 864. After the disintegration of the Avar Khaganate, the country expanded its territory northwest to the Pannonian Plain. Later the Bulgarians confronted the advance of the Pechenegs and Cumans, and achieved a decisive victory over the Magyars, forcing them to establish themselves permanently in Pannonia. During the late 9th and early 10th centuries, Simeon I achieved a string of victories over the Byzantines. Thereafter, he was recognized with the title of Emperor, and proceeded to expand the state to its greatest extent. After the annihilation of the Byzantine army in the Battle of Anchialus in 917, the Bulgarians laid siege to Constantinople in 923 and 924. The Byzantines, however, eventually recovered, and in 1014, under Basil II, inflicted a crushing defeat on the Bulgarians at the Battle of Kleidion. By 1018, the last Bulgarian strongholds had surrendered to the Byzantine Empire, and the First Bulgarian Empire had ceased to exist. It was succeeded by the Second Bulgarian Empire in 1185.

Bulgaria's only defeat at the time - by Tomislav. Bulgaria defeated Hungarians, Serbians and especially Byzantines. Simeon could have taken Constantinople but lacked the navy , so he allied with the Arab caliphate in a joint naval attack , but the Byzantines intercepted the plan and rained rich gifts to Arabs to discourage them.

Russians about that: "Under the Byzantine influence, the Serbian Zhupan Zakhariy rebelled against Bulgaria. In 924 Serbia was conquered and annexed to the Bulgarian kingdom, and Zakhari fled to Croatia, proclaimed a kingdom in 925 and a former ally of Byzantium [95]. A Bulgarian corps led by Alogobotur invaded Croatia (926), but was ambushed in the mountains of Bosnia and was defeated [7]. Fearing a Bulgarian response, the first king of Croatia, Tomislav I, agreed to dissolve the alliance with Byzantium and sign a peace based on the status quo [96]. After the conclusion of peace, Pope John X sent his legates Duke John and Bishop Madalbert to Veliki Preslav, who recognized (in the fall of 926) the imperial title of Simeon and the patriarchate of the head of the Bulgarian Church. So, there was no real war between Criatia and Bulgaria...
@zarni000

he defeated just a small contingent not the main army was a contingent lead by a general. nothing to do with what Simeon lead. Don't be so surprised. After he ambushed that contingent and destroyed it he knew that what was coming was going to end him so he sued for peace through the pope. Croatia gave up it's alliance with byzantium and there was no need for anything further. BTW that was only reason why Alogobotur and Marmais were sent to Croatia because Croatia took orders from Byzantium to attack Bulgaria from the rear.
@zarni000
@zarni000 9 ай бұрын
BTW it's just pathetic how the Byzantines kept using Servia and Croatia against Bulgaria. We should have all slavs united against the romans who were the enemy. Servia was always a sell out to other interests. If slavs had united there would be no ottoman conquest and slavs would have dominated the balkans and roman empire would have been subservient.

The last summary of the results of research on the Bulgar-Turkic criteria and their chronological validity was made by Lajos Ligeti in his monograph on Turkic-Hungarian linguistic interrelations (1986). In the paper the author has presented several recent Middle Bulgar-Turkic loans of the Volga Kipchak dialects, following Ligeti's criteria: (1) the prothetic y-; (2) the initial š < si/sï; (3) Ancient Turkic -n ∼ Chuvash -m.

Aheloy is a river in southeastern Bulgaria, Burgas district (Aytos, Burgas and Pomorie municipalities), flowing into the Black Sea. Its length is 39.9 km [1]. The Aheloy River is formed by the descent of the rivers Mangarska (left component) and Arnautska (right component) at 166 m above sea level. about 3 km exactly from the village of Beli dol, Pomorie municipality. Both rivers spring from the Aytos Mountain, right from the village of Dryankovets, Aytos Municipality, and the Arnaut River is considered to be the beginning. It flows in a wide valley, near the village of Alexandrovo to the east, and then to the southeast. It flows into the Black Sea to the Aheloy campsite, 1.2 km south of the town of Aheloy.

what ottoman empire has to do with the byzantine? also which byzantine empire? byzantine empire has totally different phases during its 1000+ centuries. the early period has nothing to do with the late period. not only in lands , but in many things. in the historical sources this difference is obvious. the early byzantine empire was more roman, or better romanized barbarian (i mean in its elite class, the emperors, and the way of life, of course because it was close to the ancient roman empire as a successor and continuer- but the late roman state of the east part has nothing to do with the early. from the elite class and the emperors, to the people and the cultural ressainance. especiall after 1204 we have a totaly different state in character than that of the 6th century for example.

71. And Vitalian, moreover, who was commander of the troops in the province of Thrace, being a man of perverse heart, hated Severus the saint of God. Now the emperor Anastasius had appointed Severus patriarch of Antioch in the room of the heretic Flavian, whom he had banished, when the orthodox bishops of the east testified in the favour of the former. 72. And Vitalian, whom we have just mentioned, raised a revolt against the emperor Anastasius, and seized Thrace and Scythia 206 and Mysia, and mustered a numerous army. 73. And the emperor sent against him a general named Hypatius. And when they fought together, he was vanquished by Vitalian and taken prisoner. And on the payment of a large ransom he was set free. 74. But immediately on his return to the emperor, the latter removed him from his command, and appointed in his room another general, named Cyril, of the province of Illyria. 75. And he also gave battle to Vitalian, and there was great slaughter on both sides. Cyril the general retired into the city named Odyssus, and stayed there while Vitalian withdrew into the province of Bulgaria. 515 AC!!! Province Bulgaria!!!!

@@SuperTupcu it was mostly about military , romans ,greeks ,Egyptians, indians left thousands of things before they vanished am I wrong? I don't see much architecture , philosophers , etc from ottomans at least like the others ,and you cant compare other empires like ,Roman,persians,hellenistic empire of alexander ,and many other to ottomans can you? Anatolia had better ancestors and they obviously took better care and left thousands of things behind their path, I have not problem with Turkey or ottomans but you cant compare them to other empires,ottoman was mostly militaristic,and barbaric, that was the type of the empire ottomans had ,others like greeks focused on civilisation,Indians on peaceful life and civilisation, romans on a little bit of everything,I am not saying that ottomans were shit or they werent worth ,but there are things that we cant compare,and you are right I don't know much about ottomans as I am focused on other empires that have better interests in me and history , and mongols and ottomans are pretty much the same thing ,a little bit by blood as ottomans came from asia ,and the thing that they were something like nomads ,and went to places they didn't belong and made empires ,the differences are that mongols were larger and they were way worse and obviously they killed thousands or even millions, now for ottomans they didn't burn and kill as much as mongols but they did rape and killed thousands especially in Balkans, and took kids ,now days even many of the turks are these kids as ottomans werent large in population at least when they first came ,other kinda of people joined them either forced or willingly, and that's why Turkey now says doesn't have clear dna and many have greek Armenian and other dna . Have a nice night.

@@cruelty5780 Yes. You are right. There is no archeological proof of any Slavic tribes before the settlements of the people who came in the 6th century to that region. Early Slavic archaeological findings are most often associated with the Przeworsk and Zarubintsy cultures, with evidence ranging from hill forts, ceramic pots, weapons, jewelry and abodes. However, in many areas archaeologists face difficulties in distinguishing Slavic and non-Slavic findings since the early Slavic culture over the subsequent centuries was heavily influenced by the Sarmatian culture from the east and by the various Germanic cultures from the west. The Proto-Slavic homeland is the area of Slavic settlement in Central and Eastern Europe during the first millennium AD, with its precise location debated by archaeologists, ethnographers and historians. Most scholars consider Polesia the homeland of the Slavs. The latest attempt of locating the place of Slavic origin used genetics and studied the paternal lineages of all existing modern Slavic populations. It placed the earliest known homeland of Slavs within the area of the middle Dnieper basin, in present-day Ukraine. This fits perfectly with I2a1b-Dinaric which comes from this exact region and spread during the middle ages. According to historical records, the Slavic homeland would have been somewhere in Central Europe, possibly along the southern shore of the Baltic Sea. The Prague-Penkova-Kolochin complex of cultures of the 6th and the 7th centuries AD is generally accepted to reflect the expansion of Slavic-speakers at the time. Ancient Roman and Greek historical sources refer to the early Slavic peoples as Veneti and Spori (allegedly from Greek σπείρω "I scatter grain") in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, and later in the 5th and 6th centuries also as Antes and Sclaveni. The 6th-century Byzantine historian Jordanes referred to the Slavs in his 551 work Getica, reporting that "although they derive from one nation, now they are known under three names, the Veneti, Antes and Sclaveni" (ab unastirpe exorti, tria nomina ediderunt, id est Veneti, Antes, Sclaveni).[8] Procopius wrote in 545 that "the Sclaveni and the Antae actually had a single name in the remote past; for they were both called Sporoi in olden times".[9] Later, in the 8th century during the Early Middle Ages, early Slavs living on the borders of the Carolingian Empire were referred to as Wends.[10][11]

But he didn't dare attack himself . He had to plead the Russian for help. also Constantine V despite having few successes in battles failed to eliminate Bulgaria after 9 or 11 attempts. Basil II is their only real victory and lets not forget they lost first half of the war and Basil was defeated. (AC 499.) Ind. VII, Joanne Gibbo solo cos. Aristus, leader of the Illyrician army, with fifteen thousand armed men, and with twenty hundred wagons loaded with weapons necessary for war, set out against the Bulgarians who were ravaging Thrace. A battle was fought near the river Zurta, where more than 4,000 of our men were killed, either in flight or on the precipitous bank of the river. There the Illyrician valor of the soldiers perished, Nicostratus, Innocentius, and Aquilinus being slain. This year a huge earthquake shook the province of Pontica. (AC 502.) Ind. X, Probos and Avieno coss. The common nation of the Bulgarians, which had been plundered many times, ravaged Thrace again, with no Roman soldier resisting. Amidas, the most opulent city, betrayed by the cunning of its monks, Choadis, king of the Persians, in the fifth month after he had begun to conquer it, broke into it, and cut down its betraying monks.

@@simeonsimeonov5205 not understanding what you meaning when saying old bulgaria only one state! bulgaria was enemy of rome and byzantium from 681ad if i recall corectly, from Heraclius time they were allies. not true the bulgarians were the strongest of the enemies of byzantium. byzantium always had the majority of its army stationed in asia minor due to constant muslim threat, ither from land or from sea. even before the muslim expansion again the majority of the roman armies stationed east to fight the Sassanids! maybe a 60-40% ratio. from the two comanding high military generals the magister militum of the east were superior of his colleage from the west. if you study you would see that the greatest bulgarian victories were always when ambushed the byzantines in narrow roads or otherwise. Samuel armies were inferior of byzantines, thats why he used extensivelly guerilla warfare and raids. he must also had shortage in money that prevent him to gather a large regular army. when Basill II conquered bulgaria he order that the taxes be payed in goods and not in coins as bulgaria had acricultural economy and coins were expensive to find, trading goods were more common.

You ask us also in your epistle: "Of what people, of what family, and of what tribe are you?" Know that we are descended from Japheth, through his son Togarmah. [In Jewish literature Togarmah is the father of all the Turks.] I have found in the genealogical books of my ancestors that Togarmah had ten sons. These are their names: the eldest was Ujur, the second Tauris, the third Avar, the fourth Uauz, the fifth Bizal, the sixth Tarna, the seventh Khazar, the eighth Janur, the ninth Bulgar, the tenth Sawir. [These are the mythical founders of tribes that once lived in the neighborhood of the Black and Caspian Seas.] I am a descendant of Khazar, the seventh son.

At the time,the new Khazar qaganate was expanding westward,squeezing out the Onogurs,or Bulghars as they begin to be named. One of the Kuvrat’s sons,the Asparuch (Asparux,Isperih) now celebrated as the founder of Bulgaria,forcibly crossed to the Danube arpund 679 to occupy imperial territory Moesia after defeating the forces of Constantine IV (668-685). The event is recorded in the preserved text of a Hebrew letter of a Khazar qahan,who wrote that the Vununtur(=Onogurs=Bulghars) has fled across the Duna,the Danube. Even if numerous for the steppe,Asparuch’s pastoralist warriors and their families were of necessity relatively few as compared to the agricultural Slav population that lived south of the Danube,and thus the Turkic-speaking Bulghars were assimilated linguistically by the Slav majority to form the medieval and modern Bulgarians. This particular ethnogenesis occuree gradually over a period of more than two centuries: there was the Turkic qan (or khan) Krum (803-814),Qan Omurtag (814-831),Qan Presian (836-852),then the wan who converted Boris I (852-889);then came Tsar Symeon (893-923), Tsar Peter I (927-970),and so on.But this transformation of Turkic shamanists into Slavic Christians did nothing to diminish the warlike character of the empire’s new neighbours. Because even warlike neighbours can be useful at times,the relations between the empire and the new Bulghar qaganate encompassed every possible variation,from intimate allience to all out-war,as exemplified by the career of the Bulghar qan or khan Tervel (or Tarvel-Terbelis in our Greek sources),the successor and probably son of Asparukh who ruled for some twenty-one years within the period 695-721,extant chronologies being inconsistent. “Bulghars and Bulgarians.” The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire, by EDWARD N. LUTTWAK, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts; London, England, 2009, pp. 173 The strategic and economic importance of this juncture is clear: in an age when much long-distance travel was by water, the confluence of the Volga and Kama rivers provided a three-way maritime link between Europe, the Near East, and East Asia. The Bulgarians developed feigned retreats several times and the Eastern Romans took the bite quite many times. Fortunately for the latter, that bad habit ended with emperors Jonh Tzimiskes and Basil II!

John Tzimiskes didn't defeat Bulgarian empire, he just occupied the eastern lands (not even whole of it) after Russians conquered Bulgaria. exaggerated coward , that's what he is .:)

@@aleksk4151 Is that so? after centuries of constant defeats at the hands of the Bulgarian Empire, Eastern Rome started to reply good starting with the "coward" and following with Basil II. History is that curious...

@@explorer1968 When you see that a tactic works why change it, it costed you more. For this battle in perticular we had the same number of soldiers, the reason at that moment they were less was that we had to deal with the Pechenegs and Serbs who too tried to rebel 3 times.

@@vasil.kamdzhalov That's the point: the Bulgarian army was an expert on ambushes!

John Tzimiskes was the guy who avoided war with Bulgaria face-to-face and gave money to Russians to strike at Bulgaria , so Tzimiskes can collect the lands freely . Exaggerated character. Oh and let me remind you ....what happened after SAMUEL rose to power ??? where is this guy Tzimiskes??? Samuel returned everything even began conquering Greece, Serbia, Croatian coast etc.

Better ask of battle ( he hasn't done of a ruler explanation thing, only battles) here is more of a random one but hopefully you get one you like. I don't expect this battle to be shown of it wasn't one of the bloodiest in European Middle ages.
