Short version: the South's economy was dependent on slavery, and their leaders became increasingly militant and authoritarian in defending it until the US elected Lincoln, a President who planned to prevent the spread of slavery outside of the Southern states. The slavers were afraid of losing their political power and used it as a pretext to separate from the US. Lincoln considered the secession illegal and refused to surrender Federal forts in Southern territory, Southern Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter, and Lincoln declared war. Over the course of the war, the North became increasingly anti-slavery, eventually abolishing slavery altogether. The war also saw a lot of innovations in stuff like the use of railroads and telegraphs in warfare, early attempts at submarine warfare, ironclad ships, and machine guns, and trench warfare, and in some ways foreshadowed WW1 and the modern concepts of total war. The war is still an extremely divisive subject in the US, which lead to white supremacist terrorist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, and we still have protests and riots over whether we should tear down statues honoring Confederate leaders. Many Southerners still insist that the war was fought for "states' rights"- something which is technically true, as long as you understand that the "states' rights" they were fighting for was the "right" to own black people, and that the South was happy to violate State's rights in order to force Northern states to accept slavery.

Lee nearly got his ass whipped at Antietam. His lines cracked 3 times (left, right and center) but McClellan was too cautious to capitalize on it. "the confederate flag" used in this is accurate because the units are all under the command of general robert e lee. the flag was the flag of the army of northern Virginia (his army's flag). The flag was rejected as the nations flag in 1861. The nations flag was the stars and bars it had 13 stars in a circle on blue in the top corner with 2 red stripes and one white stripe.

Yea because the south didn’t like the taxes on exports and many southerners didn’t Even own slaves but some did rent them

Indeed. The initial separation of southern states from the union was due to the fact that Abraham Lincoln was voted into office. They felt that they were not getting the representation that they deserved in an increasingly anti-democratic government. As such, they separated from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. The hostilities began at Fort Sumter, where Confederates demanded that Union forces within the fort leave and turn over the fort, due to the fact that the fort was within Confederate land. Both sides had explicit orders not to open fire. Both sides disobeyed orders. Abraham Lincoln believed that he had no choice but to declare war upon the Confederate States of America. From then on, the civil war was essentially a war of supremacy between two neighboring countries. In the East the confederacy benefited from forces made up of hardened veterans and exceptional leadership from Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. In the West, Grant was able to defeat and demoralize inexperienced but plentiful conscripts who left their farms to defend their homes. Grant's brutal methods of no mercy and purging entire towns earned him quite the reputation and also demoralized the enemy. Lincoln's Gettysburg address, made only because of the narrow Union Victory at Gettysburg, was a purely tactical move. He believed that the promise of freedom would cause many slaves to defect and flee to the North. In truth, it had little effect. The Union freed slaves as they moved South, but it should be noted that the Gettysburg Address only freed slaves in the south. Even though northern states were not officially considered slave states, it was still legal to own slaves in the north. Slaves in the north would not gain freedom until the 13th amendment was passed, outlawing slavery entirely. At the end of the day, history is written by the victors, and always in their favor. It is easy to overlook one's own atrocities when you focus on those of your enemies.
