The Battle of Antietam or Battle of Sharpsburg particularly in the Southern United States, was a battle of the American Civil War fought on September 17, 1862, between Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and Union Gen. George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac near Sharpsburg, Maryland. It remains the single bloodiest day in American history, with a combined tally of 22,717 dead, wounded, or missing. By midday, the action had shifted to the center of the Confederate line. This sector of Longstreet's line was theoretically the weakest. But Confederate troops were in a strong defensive position, atop a gradual ridge, in a sunken road worn down by years of wagon traffic, which formed a natural trench. Leading off the fourth attack of the day against the sunken road was the Irish Brigade of Brig. Gen. Thomas F. Meagher. The mostly Irish regiments lost 540 men to heavy volleys before they were ordered to withdraw. The carnage from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the sunken road gave it the name Bloody Lane, leaving about 5,600 casualties (Union 3,000, Confederate 2,600) along the 800-yard road.

Huzzah to the 132nd PA. Their monument is the soldier cradling the stars and stripes along the sunken road. They were part of French's Brigade, to the right of Israel Richardson. My wife's great great grandfather, Thomas E. Harder, was part of company H of the 132nd PA. He became a prominent businessman afterwards and is buried here in the little town of Catawissa PA where we live. We also have his discharge from the Army of the Potomac.

One will never fully comprehend what happened on the battlefields of history, but ideally visiting or the very least viewing one's visit will reveal far more than a textbook can. Seeing the slight swells that riddle the landscape in from the lane start to explain why it was so difficult to break through a numerical thin line. Then further explains why it crumbled when the union soldiers finally got in range. The landscape would be the salvation or destruction a soldier at any particular time during the fight for the Bloody Lane. One of your best, Sir Project_Past.

I learn so much going to these sites. Like you said it really sheds light on things we often don’t think about when reading a textbook or watching something on TV. Hard to Believe so much carnage happened at these sites.

Father Corby later became the President of Notre Dame University in South Bend Indiana. There is a statue of Father Corby in front of the administration building and Corby Hall is named in his honor. When I visited Antietam there is a flat rock with a sign next to it that states that Father Corby stood on this rock while giving absolution to the troops of the Irish Brigade.

@@ProjectPast1565 Absolutely. I was there for the filming of The Bloody Lane, Cornfield and A.P. Hills Counter-Attack for God's and Generals. It was in '97.. I am a re-enactor since age 10 and my parents were not. So, at that time, sadly, I was too young to be able to participate other than marching in some scenes. Which those weren't even used.. what a shame. I believe some footage was put in the Bonus Footage. Let me tell you.. the location, the thousands of re-enactors.. was INSANE. The hair on your arms raise up hearing the cannons, and the non-stop musket fire (sounded like 50 automatic machine guns in the middle of the fields. What a sight to see, hear and feel. Although exciting, it was also horrendously scary picturing the continual Union charges on The Bloody Lane. A mind would think: "Well, you could run!".. No. Absolutely not. Not because you wouldn't want to. But, because you could never run or hide from that many soldiers attacking you. It just wouldn't happen or work out, at all. Finally, the Irish Brigade make their charge on the lane. And, holy cow. The promoters were kind enough to mail every participant a VHS and we were given a dog tag in rememberance (I still have both). And, you can find an upload of the video on yt. You should check it out and see some of what I saw in-person. I will never forget it. In the search bar, type: Antietam 135th Anniversary (1997). Let me know what you think. Again, your presentation was fantastic. Keep up the great work in explaining what those Americans did for us all.. the ultimate sacrifice! Death to Live! And, thank you so much for doing the leg-work, explanations and editing so that all can understand the severity of that scary battle(s). A++

the amount of bugs is not to far off today because of the lame farming practices. The amounia from poor fertilizer use is the bug issue. plus the irish has sprigs of grass using up some of that nasty fertilizer they had back than. Today it is out of hand all the grass was the souls May god have mercy on your soul never giving up the fight for the next day to eat a sandwhich even today cleaning up the grounds. We fight for the unity of the three whatever that means this looks close enough go get em We have some boys with a crazy out look of 3 put them in front they know a higher number than 1. Fire at 3 paces with 3 buck shot in 3 flanks with 3 sandwhiches give them the saber rattle within the 3 paces. When down plant the springs so the next round can find they made it to the right area Welcome to the grass we stand on today
