Carlos Rodrigo Hi, the Schiltron was usually oval in shape and mobile, it could fight in any direction. If fighting in a static position it changed to circular. Some people say it gave rise to the later British square as used at Waterloo but that is just conjecture. Cheers.

King Robert the Bruce is buried in Dunfermline Abbey. Worth a visit. His name is carved in stone around the high tower. Stirling castle which is near to the battle site is very much worth a visit. It’s heaped in Scottish history of kings & queens. Plus the Wallace monument is nearby as well. The views from it are fantastic. Also, the Bannockburn Heritage Centre is also close by. It specifically there to celebrate the battle.

Was related to David I as well, why they supported him and where given the title Annandale, an ancestor of Robert (also named Robert lol). Was a procession to the abbey in 2014 for the 700th anniversary. The nave in Dunfermline is named after David I (why Robert I successor was David II).

What has largely been left out here is the fact that the English heavy cavalry was trying to charge and fight on very boggy and marshy ground. With the weight of the armour carried by the horses and knights the cavalry could not not pick up sufficient speed in the charge, or maneuver once contact was made. Bruce chose his battle site well.

Blame Edward II for deciding to pitch his camp in a marshy/boggy area where it would be hard for his cavalry to deploy. A really stupid mistake as he made no use of his light cavalry to spy out the land in advance and discover what would be suitalbe for horse, and where Robert the Bruce had dug his pits and traps in advance. THe English looked to Edward II for firm decisive leadership in a tricky battle dspite their paper advantages - they needed Winston Churchill, but instead got Boris Johnson.

@@achilles2095 Yeah but the French performance at Agincourt was even more daft than the English at Bannockburn. They were all too busy arguing about who should lead the charge(s) and never bothered to even reconnoitre as to whehter there was an easier and drier route to the English camp around and to behind via the trees. Oh no, I tell a lie - one French noble did send a few light cavalry to scout the area, and they reported it free of English and ideal for moving around and catching them from behind - but the noble then ignored their advice as apparently he felt that attacking the English from their undefended rear was 'cowardly'(!)

@@xj900uk Not to mention the French allied, numerous crossbowmen who were never re positioned or utilized! Henry knew, months if not years in advance, the French were in an defacto civil war and thus chose to start the campaign at the height of French disorganization and internal conflict.

This leaves out the role of Angus Og Macdonald, Lord of the Isles, who rescued Robert Bruce in 1306, took him to Rathlin, and stood by him in his many battles. Macdonald also brought thousands of his Islesmen and galloglass to the Battle of Bannockburn. He fought at King Robert's side, and his men were in the last rush King Robert ordered, thus helping to secure the victory.

It's not clear that Angus Og was there at all; only Barbour makes the claim. It is very likely that he was deployed to the west coast to disrupt attempts to bring troops from Ireland. IIRC Professor Penman has written about this in some detail.

Many historical accounts mention him and the longstanding friendship between Angus and the Bruce that led Angus Og to risk all for that friendship. Some even name Clan Donald's chiefs at the battle. I have Penman's book as well as 40 others. It's ok but not great. Many have the death of Angus Og wrong and some incorrectly say his older brother, Alexander Og, was a traitor to Bruce. History written by the jealous and those who lost. Why would King Robert reward Angus Og with all those isles and lands if he did not stand with him in battle? And why would he decree that the Macdonalds would forever have the honored right flank in battle?

@@reganwalker8858 There is only one account that puts Angus Og at Bannockburn and no contemporary account even mentions Clan Donald leaders at all. Given that the whole Scottish army might have been 7000 strong at most there clearly was not a force of thousands of Islesmen. Angus was killed in Action in Ireland. Dr. Penman is a great authority on this period and I think one would need to provide some very solid record/narrative evidence to contradict his analysis.

It's almost dumb luck since it's a defeat purely brought by arrogance infantry can't give chase to cavalry if instead of running head on they tried to encircle them while opening the front for archer fire and cohesive infantry advance on the front even if the english infantry were less disciplined they will contend enough for the cavalry pressure to be to much. In short normally 2:1 ratio with cavalry superiority means full on slaughter for same reason that infantry can't give chase to cavalry; they can't flee from cavalry it's why medieval armies are composed of lots of archers and cavalry gotta remember that archers also doubles up as simple infantry with an advantage of range threat.

I was born in Falkirk, our school was adjacent the Field of Bannockburn and I've worked in Stirling. The narrator omitted the Scots' use of calthrops alongside the pits on the first day one of the battle. These were 4 pronged tetrahedral metal spikes which fell with one prong facing up when scattered on the ground - an effective anti calvary weapon.

It seems that the Bruce was very well served by his subordinates in this battle. They were keen observers who read developing situations accurately and took appropriate countermeasures with the units they commanded without the need for direct guidance from Robert. One wonders it the battle of Flodden Field many centuries later would have gone better for the Scots if those commanders from Bannockburn had been in charge.

I couldn't believe my eyes when one of the questions were where did Robert the Bruce defeat the english?. At the time, the French was more famous in the christian world with the influence of the Capetians, since the Battle of Bouvines in 1214. It was not until the Hundred Years War that it was really put to the test. Especially because the English will have learned from this Battle.

Sir William Sinclair led the charge of the Knights Templar that won the day at the Battle of Bannockburn. The Bruce honored him as the Bishop of Dunkeld and Baron of Rosslyn. The English were pushed by the Scottish schiltrons into the Bannockburn where their heavy armor and horses drowned.

one thing often missing is the fact that the first rank among the schiltron was the armored lowland nobility. They shielded the lesser armed soldiers from arrows and had axes waiting for the men who made it through the wall of spears

@@jalanlengkok The Scottish men at arms were definitely inferior in number and many of the lesser lords were inferior in equipment and mounts. If they would have chosen to meet the English heavy cavalry head on, they would have been destroyed. They were aware of this and wisely chose to fight predominately on foot. The Scottish cavalry that fought mounted in most of the battles were usually lightly armored and mounted on fast horses that could avoid the English heavy horse. Just so you know who you're talking to, I have been studying history for half a century and have over 2000 history books in my library. It's not likely that you are as knowledgeable on this subject as me.

Arguably the ancients didnt have the same technology - namely stirrups and specialised saddles that allowed massed heavy cavalry formations with some rare exceptions. The Normans made the knight king of the battlefield but Bannockburn, or the Battle of the Golden Spurs in Flanders before it was arguably the day that infantry began to regain its importance. The lessons the English learned in Scotland, particuarly the use of massed longbows, served them well against the French up to the end of the hundred years war.

Attacking from the flanks or rear would have been a smarter use of the English cavalry, but this was still in a time when armored mounted heavy knights with stirrups and couched lances ruled the battlefield and pike-wielding infantry were once again coming back into vogue (like Alexander the Great's Macedonian Greek army of old). The rise of pikemen with gunpowder slowly decreased the importance of such knights.

However, this battle made cavalry very much obsolete. Giving rise to shiltron, which would then cause the English to focus more on archers and other forms of projectile attacks.

The Schiltrons did not work for Wallace at Falkirk or Bruce jr at Neville's Cross during the invasion of England in what along with Flodden Field is arguably the greatest defeat in Scottish History as at Neville's Cross the Scots outnumbered the English 2-1 and were almost completely annihilated with the Scottish King captured and spending the rest of his life in an English jail in both occasions they were shot to pieces by Archers. Their success at Bannockburn is more to do with infighting amongst the English leadership and their inability to work together and come up with any form of coherent plan than the inherent strengths of the Scottish Infantry

A dismounted knight was an isolated and easy target who could not be helped by his comrades, and fallen and injured horses thrashing wildly around would have been an obstacle to further charges and a menace to men on both sides of the line. Not a fun place to be.

well mostly what would have happened was not cycle charges into pikes but instead the cavalry would have attempted a charge, some would have tried going through it (and ended up dying) most would've just backed up and tried again. The main fighting force after the cavalry charge was the infantry as the cavalry continued to try to find openings. The issue again was a lack of openings and the fact the Scots continued advancing forward into marshy land which hurt the cavalries attempts more.

the best way to devastate pikes and spear walls are arrows. Once they retreat then you charge (but only if the ground is suitable), if not then dismount and attack on foot. the cav is kept in reserve to encircle or mop up if needed. battle won easy.
