The Battle of Endor from Star Wars Episode VI recut with the deleted Moff Jerjerrod scenes.
These scenes show the Death Star II commander's struggling with the Emperor's orders to destroy the moon and murder hundreds of his own men.
Hopefully that comes across in this rough combination of faded cutting room floor footage and the film you know in HD.
Cut footage can be seen seperately here: • Video

Gamern07 Is that canon (Legends or otherwise)? I can understand packing up all personnel in case of discovery, but doing that only to bring them to a space battle on board near-defenceless transports seems utterly counter productive. It was noble what he did to hesitate firing on his own men One can argue though that Endor would have turned around if he didn’t hesitate If the Death Star II hyperdrive was built he would have escaped and save the battle station to be rebuilt another day Or he could have ordered an evacuation the moment the shield went out saving more Imperial lives Or had he fired at Endor at begginning it would have ended battle there At this point from a military standpoint Endor was compromised overtaken by the Rebels At Sacrif that might have been Tarkin’s reason to fire, to not only kill his rival Krennic but also an attempt to stop Rebels from stealing Death Star plans or other Imperial secrets Sacif was supposed to be a secret and the moment the Rebels found it, it and the Empire’s secrets was compromised So from that analogy it wasn’t as wasteful as one might think firing the Death Star on the planet Same With Endor the Empire was losing on the planet and without the shield the weapon was vulnerable destroying the planet might have taken out some of the Rebel fleet with it and demoralized them to retreat or surrender or at least make battle a draw if rebel ships still attempt and succeed in destroying Death Star jerjerrod was still noble and right to hesitate and help Rebels win unwittingly Still there was ways he could have done still

Great edit! However, among the deleted bits there was a scene concerning the destruction of the DS firing lenses, and you can find a pretty thorough description of this episode in the last mission of SW X-Wing Alliance (1999). If so, perhaps the chronology of the sequence should be rearranged, but of course there's another scene missing (unfortunately not released), i.e. that when Jerjerrod goes "duh?" when realising that the DS is not firing :D

modeem352 We see the Death Star being used at least twice in battle against these capital ships you mention. But i think the reason the moon was targeted was because it could've done so much more damage than taking out one more ship before the Death Star's destruction. Not only would destroying the moon kill leading figures of the Rebellion, but the debris and shockwaves would probably be able to destroy or at least completely cripple the Rebel Fleet in orbit, as in one last crushing blow.

This makes no sense. Once the shield is already down blowing up the planet does nothing but draw fire away from the fleet attacking the station and trying to escape. Plus, when the shield was already down blowing up the surface to prevent this was a rendered moot. Also, if used as a preventitive measure, blasting the planet before the shield was tampered with would do nothing but blow up the shield generator (along with the rebels yes), exposing the death star to danger and accomplishing the rebels mission for them faster and more efficiently.
@ProfessorPotatoPhD
@ProfessorPotatoPhD 4 жыл бұрын
ElderFan 1425 I don't think that it was meant as a defensive measure. I think that Palpatine knew that if the rebels somehow managed to defeat the garrison and deactivated the shield, that the Death Star's fate would've been sealed. I think that in that situation he'd have considered his Enpire to have failed to protect him, and thus did not "deserve" to survive, so to speak. We see more of that mentality elsewhere, with Operation Cinder for example in SW Battlefront II. And the point of destroying the forest moon would be to deal a crippling blow to both the Rebels that had dared oppose him, as well as the Empire that had failed to protect him. Destroying the moon would kill key members and leaders of the Rebel Alliance, including Leia Organa and Han solo, as well as some of their best troops. It would also kill the soldiers and officers of the Imperial Garrison but more importantly, i think that the aim was to also destroy both the Rebel and Imperial fleets in orbit around the moon. To support this you can hear Admiral Ackbar ordering the Rebels to move away from the death star after it begins to explode, otherwise the fleet might sustain damage. And look at what happend when Starkiller base destroyed Hosnian prime, in EP VII. There was a major portion of the New Republic fleet orbiting the planets, and you could see them getting absolutely destroyed. While this forest moon will not cause such big of an explosion as a big planet, i still think that it's destruction would cause debris and shockwaves to destroy, or at least severely damage, to all ships in the area. I see it as a order to just destroy everything, as a final, crushing blow.

I read in sources that blowing up Endor was Palpatine's contingency plan if the rebel had managed to cut off the shield. What was the point of that?, It wouldn't have accomplished anything save for killing the rebels on the moon. The shield would still be down and the Death Start would still be vulnerable to the rebel fleet and fighters. I don't see how Palpatine hoped to win the battle by having Endor destroyed.

Destroying the forest moon would not only kill key members of the Rebel Alliance leadership (As well as the Imperial garrison) But the destruction and explosion would probably create enough debris and shockwaves to destroy, or at least severely cripple, both the Rebel and Imperial fleets in orbit. Look at EP. VII, when Starkiller base destroys Hosnian Prime. The New Republic fleet in orbit gets pretty much evaporated. I think that was the goal of destroying the moon; Dealing one final, crushing blow.

@HiringHamblin

Thanks. I do get the impression that the similarities to the end of Ep IV are what saw these scenes on the cutting room floor. Also in the process of editing this I did feel that having both the Moff's scenes and Piett's was a bit redundant. We'd spend quite a bit of time with Imperial officers, perhaps too much. I think this would've played a part too, in the final edit at least. Piett was a returning character, and would be required to be involved in the Executor's sequences so I can understand them going with his scenes over Jerjerrod's.
@shamus10011
@shamus10011 7 жыл бұрын
I disagree on the redundancy. It would have showed the battle from all perspectives. I feel that Jerjerrod got short changed. The wonderful thing about Piett was that he was a fleshed out character in Episode V and you cared about him in Episode VI. I think you would have had a similar feeling about Jerjerrod if these scenes were kept. They also build the tension -- will the Death Star be destroyed before it blows up Endor and will Luke's sister and best friends survive on Endor or be blown up by the Death Star?

@@shamus10011 Actually extremely redundant due to the fact that the Death Star was already blown up in the middle of its firing sequence in ANH. What are the chances that a 2nd Death Star would also be blown up right in the middle of being fired? Regardless of the nice side-story showing all perspectives, it would seem repetitive and predictable to see the Empire again only seconds away from destroying another planet/moon at the climax of the movie. The fact that yet another Death Star's weak spot is exploited is enough of a repetition of the end of ANH.

The most logical reason which I can think of for them cutting these scenes is to prevent the movie from feeling like an exact deja-vu repeating of episode 4 and to make it feel more original and distinguishable.

@Zarrov
@Zarrov 4 жыл бұрын
he was more interested in creating a no-win scenario so that Luke will have no choice but to turn to the dark side in an attempt to kill him and stop this madness. Originally though, in first drafts of the script, Palpatine was supposed to be killed by Vader, and Vader was supposed to take the mantle of the emperor. They planned to have +3 movies at this point, but then they changed their mind. They cut this scene because it was unnecessary, and the complexity of Jerrjerod was a left-over from those drafts were he was kinda rival to Vader in plotting against emperor and trying to take over the Empire.

Jerjerrod's actor did a fantastic job, but I can see why they cut these scenes. It's a pretty grey plot line, not like the good vs evil story of the movie. Star Wars has alot of war elements but illustrating the kind of horrors of war might not sit right with the rest of it. maybe if Jerjerrod escaped it would have been better.

The additional scenes are interesting, but they slow down the pacing and when were jumping between three different locations during the final act (Luke/Vader/Emperor in the throne room, Han/Leia/Ewoks on Endor. Lando/Wedge/Ackbar in space), introducing a four just seems excessive, especially when it only involves a supporting character. Cutting these was the right call.

It wouldn't have mattered for the Death Star but the loss of Leia would of been a huge blow. plus they were in a very low orbit. looks like they may have been within the thermosphere, the rebel fleet would have sustained catastrophic damage, the rebel fleet being destroyed by the blast makes much more sense than the executor crashing into the Death Star now that was dumb. Anyway why do you think Ackbar ordered the fleet away from the Death Star when it was about to go? Cause it would have sustained heavy losses imagine what would happen if Endor was destroyed.

These original deleted scenes didn't have any post-processing at all (no music), and had some movie-set dude call out the Emperor's lines, as a cue for our heroic Imperial officer to do his own actual acting. Whoever put together this specific video interspersed the deleted scenes with the movie scenes to make their "Moff Cut", added soundtrack music - and in all likelihood, did their own Emperor voice acting, over the top of the movie-set dude.

At first I was with most of the commenters here, thinking "oh come on, they should have left this in, it would have been awesome" ... but on reflection, I think it was the right decision to cut. What would have been our hero's character arc? He's the commanding officer of the planet-smashing apex of the entire Galactic Empire. He might be another Krennic. Would the order to destroy Endor really stress him out so, simply because he's such a gosh-darn decent guy? Such an unorthodox character miiiight work ... but you'd also have to do a ton of extra work earlier in the movie to scope that out, to explain how someone with with such a soul of sugar-plums and fairy dust could rise that high in the brutal Imperial hierarchy. Doing justice to a topic that messy would require an entire subplot. Overcomplicates the story, doesn't dovetail with anyone else's arcs. Best removed.
