On this 158th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg podcast, we sat down on Sachs Covered Bridge with Licensed Battlefield Guide Jim Pangburn to discuss what happened after the fighting ended on July 3, 1863 and where the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac went. Plus, what condition were they in? Did George Meade really have Lee in his grasp and let him go? Was the virtually unused XI Corps really able to make the difference? Press play and find out.

it's amazing how much and how often timing issues affected the battle and its aftermath. Lee leaves a few hours later or Meade leaves a few hours earlier and odds are the Army of Northern Virginia is practically destroyed. Another interesting thing is Hooker asking for the forces from Harper's Ferry and West Virginia before the battle but being rebuffed by Halleck before he ends up resigning only to go ahead and eventually give Meade those forces anyways. Had they went ahead and given the men to Hooker while still firing him, there is a pretty good chance Lee has 10 to 15,000 men waiting for him on the other side of the river and with Couch coming down to help with another 10-20k they could have really put Lee in a bad position.

Two sevenths of your army have been wrecked on day 1. Eight out of your ten possible supply and maneuver lines have been cut or captured by day 2. On day 3, you finally hold the ground contested, and repulse your enemy's assaults so that you have a little breathing room. Now, chase them down and slaughter or capture their entire force! Go! What are you waiting for? GO!! Yea, nah, but thanks for the advice.

Exactly. They were banged up. I don’t see how meade could have done it any differently.

I can’t imagine coordinating the retreat from Gettysburg with 70,000 men and tons of wounded after 3 days of hell…miles and miles of wagon trains, columns of men, etc. Rather remarkable.

On July 4 Lee didn’t want a counter attack. No chance. ANV was almost totally out of artillery ammunition. They had 10s of thousands of wounded and 4-5k union pows. ANV was not in a position to successfully fend off any large scale assaults on July 4.

I haven’t listened to this since we recorded it. Did someone claim Lee WANTED a counterattack or that he PREPARED FOR a counterattack?

Gordon’s brigade was the vanguard for the ANV on their march from VA to PA. And, Gordon’s brigade was the rearguard for their retreat back into VA. Do we know if this was Lee’s decision (which brigade would be the lead brigade as well as the brigade who conducted the rearguard) or was this strictly left up to Ewell?

Good question. I doubt Lee would worry himself with such a detail. Do you know if the confederates rotated the order of March like the Union did? If so, then I would guess that Gordon was last because he was first into Gettysburg and so it was just his turn to be last in the corps’ order of march.
