If Longstreet had Pickett by noon on the 2nd, we'd all be speakin' Southron. It's not that Meade had run out of corps to send south to stop the Rebels, it's that if 12th Corps in particular is not available to return to Culp's Hill late on the 2nd - and it would not have been if Longstreet had been able to put in Pickett after taking the Peach Orchard - Ewell would have had a clear shot at the Baltimore Pike on the morning of the 3rd, and the whole battle would have been over.

D.H. Hill was the least risky choice of all the Divisions commanders and at least as good as Ewell and D.H Hill. Was it as Longstreet said " Too much Virginia"? To me , he was the least risky choice as far as competence and his battlefield record. No?

Perhaps, but Lee didn't like him at all. By that point, Hill was in command in NC, giving Lee grief about reinforcements, so not doing himself any favors in getting a shot at coming back to the ANV.
