I like them when they're done right. Yamaha for example, does an incredible job with their BB lineup. But a lot of PJ basses just pair an overbearing P pickup with a weak J and it effectively becomes a P bass with an extra knob

I feel like G&L is almost always a better VALUE for the same dollar. A lot of Fender is branding at this point. Of courses they still make great instruments, but I love my G&L L1000 to death and it was far more reasonable than the top of the line Fender equivalent P-Bass

I always wondered why Leo did not design amps with G&L. I know he had to sign a 10 years non-compete contract when he sold Fender to CBS in 1965 and that is why he stayed in the background when Musicman started building amps but after 1975 he was free to do whatever he wanted. By the way... he sold Fender for $13 million which is the equivalent of $107.5 million today.

I can't believe I guy that has spent his life at a guitar store actually thinks that the weight of the two basses might be down to some of the components rather than considering the very real possibility that it just simply the variance in the wood that was used *that* day (that they were manufactured). Guitars/basses of the SAME model often vary by as much as a pound and a half (check Sweetwater). How does he not know this???

Put that Squire JB or P-Bass through an Ampeg amp with decent speakers and they will display some character that is lacking here. These little practice amps especially for bass just don't cut it for me because the bottom end is so feeble. Nice playing as always Nathan.

After 45 years of playing bass (and guitar, too), I have to say that the Precision Bass is the instrument that has made music in many forms what it is today. Let's thank Leo and his guyz' George Fullerton, Forrest White and Freddie Tavares for changing the sound of pop, rock, R & B, country, and jazz music. And to make that happen, - we can't forget James Jamerson, Carol Kaye, Duck Dunn, Sting, Peter Cetera, Chuck Rainey, Ron Baker, Gordon Edwards, Roger Waters and all the great P-Bass players that made us pick up the instrument and play away!

Only tone off with a P Bass? Surely, you jest! My '77 fretless maple blank plank P Bass just recoiled in horror at the thought that it's a one-trick pony. For you P Bass players out there who think a P only does tone rolled off, explore the full tonal palette. Play behind the pickup. Play in front of it. Stick foam under the strings at the bridge. Take it out. On a fretless, explore fretting with the pads of your fingers and then compare with the fingertips proper. There are a zillion tones to be had in that OG.

To the point of the CV sounding more classic, on my old SB-2 (arguably slightly different pickups from the LB) you could pretty well nail down classic P by rolling the volume down to about 75%. No one ever gives the volume respect as a tonal device...

While the Squire Jazz is a pretty good bass, the G&L has enough upgrades with the block inlays, the upgraded bridge and the high output pickups to more than make it worth the price difference. To me the Squire is a great modding platform for those who want to change things and make it their own. The G&L seems more like it is better from the get go to the point that you would not have to upgrade things. There seems to be a similar thing going on with the P style basses but without the inlay upgrades. Having said that, the 6 bolt system on the neck makes the G&L pretty tour ready - you know the neck is going to break before those bolts ever get ripped out.

OK I was kind of insulted by that visual comment that is not the only way to check out a guitar. I check out a guitar all the time and I am totally blind the way it feels when you play it the action I have a classic vibes, jazz 60s jazz bass by squire and it’s fretless and I’m blind and I play it, I love the way it plays am I gonna fix it up? Oh hell yeah but it not being a fender I can cut I can fix it up without it losing its value. I am going to put new machine heads on it I am going to put a high mass bridge on it. I am going to put new pick ups in it probably new pots in it And I am going to take some. I don’t know maybe 30,000 grit sandpaper in my cloth whatever you wanna call it and redo the fingerboard a bit but otherwise I might get it epoxied the fingerboard epoxied I might haven’t decided on that one yet but stop the visual things OK cause you have no idea. I am a pro just like you And the bases in guitars that I have had I have had a fretless Reichenbacher bass that was awesome. I had a it was a 5001 I had a 4003 Rickenbacker with Fritz. That was awesome. I have two Ibanez I have a five string Ibanez and a six string Ibanez. That is absolutely fantastic. They have both have Fretz and I have my 60s classic vibes fretless by squire it’s a fore string. It is awesome. I once had a five string that I gave to My Son. It was an awesome bass too and I’m going to put a high mass bridge on on my fretless so there are lots of different ways to check out an instrument you don’t have to be cited in order to check out an instrument OK watch those comments by the way, I do like your show And dictation I have to dictate my stuff because using the keyboard on the phone it’s just ridiculous but my Rickenbacker fretless was an awesome bass. It was a 5001 Rickenbacker fretless base that one played like a dream I wish I still had it to be honest, but hey, you live and learn 22:17
