Always appreciate Jesse’s eagerness to talk about Canada’s contribution to the Allied effort! Canada substantially expanded its navy & merchant marine during the war, such that by 1945, it was the world’s third largest naval power!

Life and service aboard U-Boats and submarines during this era were a rather unique and special kind of nightmare for their crews compared to other military roles of the same era in regards to the day to day operations, living and working spaces, sleeping quarters, the smells of diesel fumes, oil, body odors, sanitation issues, bilge water, the temperature fluctuations, the limited recreational activities to distract them for even just brief moment, ration quality and ration quantity getting worse as missions went on, having to constantly be alert and on the lookout for enemies to hopefully preempt detection, anti-submarine countermeasures and a whole host of other problems…

With due respect, it should be South Atlantic, not Pacific at 5:04

Also they mixed up the river name, they used the English spelling River Plate but pronounced it as if it were Spanish. In Spanish it would be the Plata river.

This is my favorite History related channel. That being said, this topic has been spoken about ad nauseum and I'd say 1k views per hour upon release reflects this fact.

6:59 US submariners know the feeling.
@carterwgtx19 күн бұрын
Yes they were super successful and scared the British high command to death - they didn’t make such one sided deals with the US for destroyers for nothing. However, the British response in shifting ship building to escorts and the sheer size of its merchant marine across the globe absorbed those months of serious peril and then just squeezed the U Boat force to the end.

we're considering a War of 1812 documentary. But it's a tricky war to cover, so many campaigns and fronts.

It's obvious that the propoganda impact of The Battle of the Atlantic was more impactful than the actual battle was. The largest strain to GB's capacity to fight during the aforementioned battle was a lack of suitable harbors, and rail lines than ran from west to east. As a result, harbors became massively overloaded with cargo, and ships started to pile up as the cargo unloading times increased. Worse still, distribution time tables also were impacted as a result of the inefficient design of the railroad for the unloading and transportation requirements brought on by the need to suddenly need to unload countless ships in harbors on the other side of Great Britian, which had not recieved the proper funding, effort, and forethought to be prepared for its new duties. Had Raeder actually had the necessary Uboats according to his assessment to conduct operations in a meaningful and coordinated matter in force, he likely would've produced great results. And the battle of the Atlantic might be as important or impactful as it's propogandized assessment affirms. Otherwise, its way overblown. At best they merely caused a minor to slightly lesser major concern, and caused the UK to divert some resources into researching, training, and perfecting anti-submarine technologies, vessels, and tactics.
