I ended up purchasing a 2018 Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited and ended up regretting that decision. I had that damn Jeep in for warranty repairs 3 times in the first year of owning it, not to mention the problems I had that the dealership claimed they couldn't replicate. Issues with the Sway Bar disconnect, Lockers non engaging, Alignment and Vibration issues, a mystery rattle ect... Suffice to say the Jeep has been sold and I ended up taking a massive loss. Standard AC, Hardtop, and the 8" touchscreen with Sync really tilt my favor towards the 'essential' (base) Bronco as a potential daily driver. Every time I configured a Wrangler Sport with those options pricing would take a quantum leap far, far above my proposed mental 'budget' and I'd quit my build. We own a '19 JLU Wrangler Sahara, and while we have the top and doors off all summer here in So Cal, we have never once put the windshield down. @carrdoug994 жыл бұрын
For me the clear winner is the Bronco. First off, the the two door wrangler cargo volume is too small for me to even consider buying it. I would remove the back seats no matter which vehicle I bought. My style of four wheeling doesn't involve rock gardens or desert racing, so the predictable crawl rate you get with the manual is a primary consideration. As you illustrated, the Bronco is the clear winner. I would get the Black Diamond. Upgrade to the marine grade seats/rubberized flooring, 477 gears (for 33" tires), and factory installed 2" lift. Ultimately I'd probably opt for the four dr because of a better overlanding fit, but I'd always want the two dr. That Bronco looks amazing!

The Badlands has some nice to have features like the disconnectable sway bars, but you loose the manual transmission. You also loose the manual transmission with the Sasquach package, so that's out as well. A question mark is going to be how much compression breaking are your going to get with such a small engine. Also, at what rpm are you going to approach the max torgue numbers. This manual transmission could be very short lived if we don't get positive answers to these questions. Which would be too bad.
@zaphods2ndhead1934 жыл бұрын
One of the big unknowns at this point is how much the Sasquatch package costs on the Base trim level. If that is affordable (say $2k) then it would blow the Wrangler Sport out of the water. Because of the lift and tires the Approach, Departure, Breakover and Clearance numbers also improve dramatically.

The bronco may be a bit longer. It's actually an advantage. It's not too long that it'll get hung up in most places the jeep can go. It makes it a better hill climber and will give it more room to work with while going over specific terrain. Also, it's only a half inch wider. Point goes to the bronco for a wider range of terrain it can conquer in it's 2 door base form. The bronco is IFS. An H3 can out turn ANY straight axle jeep product. What makes you think the bronco will be any different? But if you're looking for a true overlander (rough terrain but long trips), the bronco is your best bet. But if you're looking to build a wheeler/crawler. Get a Jeep. You're also less likely to take on door damage in a Jeep Wrangler. Simply by it's design. There are advantages to both. @jjc45774 жыл бұрын
The IFS was clearly an on-road ride quality decision. I remember waaaay back in the early 90s there was an SUV comparison (in Car and Driver of all things) between the Ford Explorer and the Jeep Cherokee. The Explorer got stuck twice in the off-road part of the test, the jeep did not and the only comment about it was how much better the explorer handled on-road. This is why the Bronco has IFS.

If you're looking to off-road you're going to be in a Rubicon or Sasquatch, so the comparison is sort of pointless. Unless...you're going to be going with a base and doing extensive upgrades yourself. In that case the Bronco is still a clear victor. The Jeep's clearance advantage vanishes when you replace the Bronco's stock 16" wheels. And who cares about fold-down windshields? And the contrived "top-down experience"? While a soft top is absolutely appealing, Ford or the aftermarket will provide one of those for way cheaper than adding a hardtop for a Jeep. This was dubious manipulation to make the test seem close. Bottom line is that the only way a Jeep makes sense is for those who really need to save a couple inches in length and width and spend their days hardcore, solid-axle rock crawling, without needing to haul much with them or care how comfortable they are getting there.
@AdviceFromYourDad4 жыл бұрын
Not to mention how much more civilized a Bronco will be on-road the 95% of the time you use it. Front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering will make it a much better daily driver. That extra wheelbase and length make it a better-riding vehicle with more room. There's a reason why Jeep's 4-door is way, way out-selling the 2-door. The 2-door is just smaller than all but the most hardcore owners want.

However, throw some 2.5'' springs, shocks, longer sway endlinks and any type flex-joint arms on the sport for about $1k cost and it's twice as good as stock. i am old enough to have driven the original small Bronco's back in the late 60's. their competition at that time was Jeep and International" Scout 4x4. the original Bronco was AWFUL! it had a coil spring front straight axle and when you drove it on the highway, it was hard to keep in a lane because it wandered so much all over the road. and as far as off road was concerned, the first Bronco's were no match for the original Jeeps and the Scout. i' purchased a new 2015 Wrangler and have been very happy with it. i do not do much off roading at all but do drive in the snow a lot in Pennsylvania and my Jeep handles that just fine. as to the folding windshield, it's true that very few Jeep owners ever do that. the Wrangler has a drive line that is 75 years old! there are NO-ZERO "surprises" with Jeep's 4x4 system. i think the real test for the new Bronco will be how dependable and "bullit-proof" it is in real use. the Bronco has an "advanced" 4x4 system and all that says to me is TROUBLE AND BREAKDOWNS! i'm not worried about Jeep losing ground to the Bronco. my Wrangler does everything just fine year round. in the summer i fold the top down and ride around in the open air. in the winter, i cruise through snow up to 12" deep with no issue at all. i have NO use for all the "electronic bells and whistles" on new cars and trucks these days. the very BEST thing i like about my Jeep is that when i do do pull the "manual engage 4x4 floor lever" back in low range, i'm driving a WW2 vehicle that isn't controlled by a "satellite."

Just a quick comment to provide some clarification on the removal and storage of the doors on the Bronco 2-door model. As it stands currently, only the 4-door model has the ability to store the doors in the rear storage area. Unless Ford makes a major change to the design of the 2-door model prior to rollout, it will not have this available storage for the 2-door model as the doors on the 2-door are wider than those on the 4-door. Useless. I can look up specs. I want back to back driving impressions on and off road.

I have been saying that the Bronco coming out will make Jeep better for months now. I am glad you mentioned that competition is good for both. I honestly can’t wait to see what the model after the JL will have now that Ford has crashed into this market with an absolutely amazing off-roader. This is going to be good for both Ford and Jeep fans alike. I think we will see more progress in both vehicles in just a few years and I cannot wait.

Ive ordered a base model in shadow black. Can't wait to get mine Buutt. I will have to sell my Jeep for it. But I'm not completely bothered by it

@Cody Berrier let's be honest. Many won't go off-road. And the IFS suspension in the front will be enough based on the stats. I'm sick of driving on the highway with that annoying death wobble to a decent trail. Besides Jeep has so many issues with transmissions it's obvious not to go with them until they have bugs like that fixed

@Cody Berrier I'm not a hardcore off-roader either btw. I rarely used my Hummer to off road. I only used 4WD for trips to my parents cabin and the beach since I didn't like how my f-250 acted in the sand. Don't hate on the Ford because this will bring out competition and improve ur little Jeeps. I may keep mine but that doesn't mean that it will continue to be my trail rig once the bronco arrives.

The Bronco won the open air category in my opinion. You can take the doors off the bronco at the trail head, store them in the back, and when you're done you can put them back on. Jeeps doors are too big to take off and store in the back so you would have to take them off at home. However, it is illegal in most states to drive on the road without side mirrors so getting the trail is impossible to do legally without purchasing after market mirrors. The Bronco base doesn't have a soft top so if it did happen to rain you would get wet. The Jeep wouldn't do much better in the rain because they would've left their doors at home, so they would also get wet. However, there is this thing called the weather forecast that would warn you if it might rain that day, giving you time to put the roof back on the Bronco or the doors back on the Jeep so weather is not a factor in this category. The open air category is best judged on a sunny day with good weather when people would actually have everything off. The Bronco's top roll crossbar is farther back than the Jeeps, giving a more open top feeling. Yes, the Jeeps front windshield can fold down, but I don't think many people will ever put it down so it is no advantage over the bronco. I'm assuming extra purchases is not allowed in this category, like the aftermarket side mirrors for the Jeep. Otherwise I would say you can buy a soft top for the Bronco, removing the slight advantage of the Jeep having one stock. The new final score, in my opinion, should be 4 - 2. Bronco wins.
