I celebrate my 1 Year Anniversary as an all-in traditional DE wet shaver on April 12 this year. I went from shaving with a cartridge razor every two to three days (and hating it) to a daily shaver with a variety of new and vintage razors, and loving it. I look forward to each shave, focus on how to develop my technique, and simply enjoy this new daily ritual. Matt's videos - especially his tips on technique and best practice - have been invaluable, and Razor Emporium's service for revamping two of my razors (plus getting the Sentry slant to me) has been fantastic. If anyone's on the fence about switching from a cart to a DE, give a DE a try. Don't scared of it, but take your time, learn from some of the many KZbin videos, and learn to love your shaving.

Matt, I am into my third month, and I only experienced problems during the first week. I am still trying different blades and I'm slowly increasing my adjustable razor to more aggressive levels. Your videos have helped me a great deal and I'm glad you have such a large archive of them. I've watched some old ones when you were just a boy. :) What I like most about your approach is the encouragement you provide and your willingness to say that there is no one "best of anything" for everybody and that we all have to find what works for each of us and what we are comfortable with. Keep it up.

I used to hate shaving having experimented with both cartridge and electric razors. Plus being a cheap bastard, I was sick of sky high cartridge prices. When I saw the Henson ad on YT, I dove into the traditional wet shaving world 2 years ago this month. I shave every 2nd day and have followed many of your helpful tips. I love it when you said: “Just get started”. I have since given my Henson AL 13 mild to my nephew along with 80 blades or so. He was using a Gillette Fusion and getting ingrown hairs. He now loves his “new” DE razor. My one and only razor is the Karve Overlander - aluminum with a 4 inch handle. It is superbly made, reasonably priced, and shaves like a dream. My mantra is to constantly improve my technique. My wife is getting tired of me saying: “I’ve had the best shave ever”.

I bought my first DE razors (a Henson AL13, then a King C. Gillette shortly after that) a little over a year ago and, man, I don't know, I don't really think it's really that much of an improvement over the cartridge razors I've used for years. They definitely feel nicer to use as a shaving instrument, but the results aren't noticably different. At this point I go back and forth between all of them, depending on which one I feel like using.

For final results a multi-blade cartridge might feel smoother because it lifts the hair, cuts it, and then the hair retreats back under the skin. A smoother feel, but a greater risk of ingrown hairs. The problem I had with cartridges was that they clogged up with cut hair that was difficult to rinse out unless you have fire hose pressure. That extra hair being dragged along my face was just another source of irritation.

I never had any shaving issues. I'm just a James Bond fan, and it was cheaper to buy the razor from Goldfinger than an Aston Martin. I still use a compact head like the Atra or Sensor for cleaning up the tight spot around the top of my ears.

Hey Matt, i shave with a safety for almost 52 years now. Once in a while, i use a gillette mach3 on saturdays and it feels good although my beard responds better with the R89. It is all a matter of habits. If you start using a cartridge and keep on going with it your skin will feel good, and if once in a while use a safety perhaps you will feel some rash or serious irritation. It is normal.

I wish I had found traditional wet shaving back when I was in the military. Unfortunately I didn't know any better and only use multi blade cartridge razors back then. And daily shaving with them to stay within military regs, i grew to hate shaving. A few years ago I tried my first DE (a Henson) hoping it lived up to the hype. I'm so glad I gave it a try. Now I love shaving. I find it meditative. The process of prepping for the shave, building a lather, the skill and technique used to get an irritation free BBS is just awesome. On my days off when I have the extra time I like to Straight Razor Shave. Any other time it's a DE. My days are always better when I start the day off with a shave. For some it's a chore. For me it's a relaxing, Zen way to start my day.

I was using ShaveLogic cartridges. They were great and then they went out of business. I found Wet Shaving, especially, your channel and went with DE shaving. What a difference in the results and the face feel. Now, I am all in. My Konsul is the best adjustable there is.

Yep, a no brainer! But some people just don't get it. They're either afraid to try (no 1 excuse) or peer pressure/marketing BS. I started out using a Schick Injector at 15-16yrs old (thanks mom)and of course I tried everything over the following years but always went back to the smooth SE/DE razor. So for more years than I care to reveal I've had great shaves. With the continuing improvement and availability of software/hardware out there, shaving just keeps getting better for those willing to try. Great video Matt, thanks.

OK - here we go - I always use a DE and on the 3rd pass finish sensitive spots (neck) with a cartridge. Some notes: - DE shaving is an experience - it relaxes me and overall is a better shave - Cartridges just need need a different technique and - for me anyway - they DO work - the experience is worse but the net result for me is pretty much the same - DE razors - even if a shave is nick free - takes skin slicing to the edge - it needs more healing and post-shave care - Cartridge redness comes with the territory - but can be minimised with an oil shave - I can cartridge shave in the shower and don't need a mirror - It's ALWAYS about the prep - but for a cartridge shave is best with an oil - For me - a Cartridge is always the faster, more 'practical' shave but nowhere near as fun as DE

No ingrown hairs, but my first DE shave was fine…mostly due to being scared I was going to cut myself. But my second shave I had the worst razor burn on my neck. I’ve learned which blades are good for me and that I need an adjustable razor. Now shaves are smooth and more of a spa treatment than an obligation.

I switched to double edge razors a long time ago. I still consider myself a "newbie", because until recently I didn't have even one high quality, superbly crafted razor. Now I have one: an Envoy XL. I am enjoying it, too!

I concur 💯 Safety razors wipe the floor with any cart. That Edwin jagger head is the same as king c Gillette and the Merkur hd 34c. If I was forced to use a cart it’d be either skinguard or Schick xtreme 3. Those are only 2 that don’t give me ingrowns. Nice video

I’ve been DE shaving over 10 years now. I think I tried every cartridge that was on the market back then (a few electrics too). Ingrown hairs, pimples, irritation, and short lived expensive cartridges with EVERY shave. So I grew a beard for a while and I didn’t care for that either. Then I found the DE/wet shaving world and never looked back. I remember I tried the dollar shave club and with the one and only shave with their product I nearly severed my entire face off my head. So many nicks. Started with a Merkur 34C. The learning curve for a safety razor isn’t that bad and there is just no better way to shave that I’ve found.

Been a traditional wetshaver for almost five years now, and I'll use simple gels or creams, I'll throw on some Nivea balm, I'll still use simple aftershaves or scents if I feel like it, but I will never ever use a cartridge razor again unless I absolutely have to. I'd rather tape a razorblade to a stick at this point! 😂 It takes time to get used to them, but it's SO worth it.

While I’m a DE user, I’ve used these for my head. I’ve used the standard Atra clone carts and would bump up only in the back of my head. With these, I don’t bump up. Ive shave my head about every 2-3 days. Lastly, then skin guard head fits my Sensor razor handle for added weight.

Going the cheap way could be the problem. I went that route and always found using these electric razors unsatisfactory. Eventually with some other changes, I retried double edge razor and shaving soap and lather brush. Less noise during the shaves now, and the mess is of a different form.

I've been wet shaving for the past 10 years. I also like to try out new razors being it safety razor or cartridge, it doesn't matter. Used 34hd, Fatboy, Parker Variant, R89, R41. Astra SP work best for me in all of them. I still get the best shave (meaning smooth, comfortable and close) out of my Wilkinson Hydro 5 blade. It just works for my skin. If I shave every few days that is. I have sensitive skin and I don't think I can handle every day shaving with it. The Muhle R89 is the one I use when I have some skin issues because I know it won't make it worse. It's the smoothest safety razor I've used and most forgiving. I don't get BBS shaves with it easily, but leaves me smooth enough. I've tried Harry's 5 blade and while I like the razor itself and the whole presentation, the blades angle seem not to work for me and it cuts me regularly even when being extra careful. I had really high hopes for it being a German made razor and blades. I have Philips Series 5000 and I also get smooth shave with it. To each his own.

My first DE razor about 8 years ago was a Muhle R89 and things didn't go well so I went back to the cartridge razors. About 2 years ago for my birthday I wanted to have another go so I asked my wife to buy me a Gillete (King C Gillete). I switched to double-edge safety razors from cartridges about a year ago. I DO NOT regret it at all! First off, it's cheaper. I bought an inexpensive Merkur ($40). Which is what many multi-pack cartridges cost. Then I ended up going through my grandfather's old cabinets and found well over a thousand unopened Gillette razor blades from the early-mid 1960's. So I have a lifetime supply of blades for free! The best thing is, I used to get razor burn from the cartridges. But have yet to have a nick or hint of razor burn using the safety razor.

I used the orange BIC one-way cartridges combined with canned foam all my life (not every day, I used an electric shaver for my working day). I always had tons of cuts and I hated especially the canned foam. 2 years ago I heard of safety razors the first time and decided to try it out. I will be honest, it took me a long time to get adjusted to it. My hair is annoying at some places, especially on my neck which is almost impossible to shave clean no matter what. I started with the rockwell 6c (which, despite everyone's keep praising it, never really worked well for me), then Mühle R41, then landed at the super aggressive Yaqi Top Aggressive slant. Today, I have become very happy with super mild shavers like the Yaqi Mellon. And I have moved from bowl-lathering creams, to face-lathering soaps. I would never go back to the BICs, and even my worst safety razor shaves are still much better than my best BIC shaves have been.

Yeah it’s a no brainer the only problem is you can’t take it on the plane if you don’t take a luggage but a backpack instead and you are not allowed to have it with you on the plane but the double edge blades can’t be in your bag with you in the plane. Then you need a cartridge razor or disposable but they have a bevel safety razor disposable from target which is a good opinion for travel.

I wonder how many who try a DE safety razor get turned off because they get a nick or two? Maybe you've done a video to give tips to first-time DE wet shavers? The two things I learned when I went back to DE shaving: (1) use a light touch (never press), and (2) only do one pass for the first week. Learning the proper technique is the key.

I use a old ( 45 years and my first razor) schick pivot for trimming around the nose but thats all. I use to hate shaving but after the switch i love to shave every morning.

Been a wet shaver for nine years. I have accumulated a number of DE's. I wish I could point out all their names. Why can't DE manufactures label their razors? I can name a few of them but I have some great razors I have no idea what they are and I would like to. Also is their any benefit to turning the blade over? Using the Mach III cartridges for over 24 years now (after switching from electric), skin irritation in my case is more down to the direction of shaving and very much the shaving creme/soap/gel used than to anything else. A cousin of mine has did a 3 years hairdresser/barber apprenticeship years ago, and so she had to learn to shave with a straight razor too. At some point, she needed someone for practice before her exam, and so a few of us male relatives got a barbers shave by her. (they use the straight razors where the blades are changable and not resharpened and have to dispose the blade after each customer). And she did the whole thing with the hot warm towel beforehand and stuff, like they learned to. She did really well, but it still had the lower sides of my neck irritated. She was utterly shocked and so sorry, and i had to calm her down and explain to her why. (left and right at the height of the adams apple, i can't shave downwards or upwards but have to pull the shaver "backwards" in the direction of the back of my neck) So when even the professional straight razor isn't going to irritate less, the DE one will neither i guess. And it's easier to keep the correct cutting angle of the blade with the cartridges i think.

Matt, I struggle…I have been diligently working on DE razor technique for four years. I am pretty confident but still have issues with my “smile” area and lower neck. I get ingrown hair there no matter what I try. The only razor that consistently gives me a no irritation shave is a Gillette Skinguard😢. The best DE I have found is a Rockwell plate 5 with Treet Platinum blade. Any advice? Thank you sir!!

I am lucky enough to have found a virtually mint condition Eclipse Red Ring for almost nothing which I adore and it works really well for me. However I also use sometimes the Dorco Pace 4 which I also find works well for me and doesn't cause me any irritation issues. I like that the Dorco carts blades are spaced out more and I never have issues with them clogging.

Yes tried double edge, , single blade disposable, three-blade disposables, five-blade disposable. Mild double edge razors along with disposable Gillette Mach3 are the best. Gillette Fusion5 feels like scraping my face and sometimes gave cuts. BIC-1 okay for face shave, if I not mind at least a little irritation, but double edge razors are better.

Hey Matt! They actually rebranded the Good News razor as the Gillette Sensor 2. Exact same razor, under the Sensor name. It was just a remarketing ploy to sell the razors at a higher price. For nostalgic purposes, I still have 2 packages of the original Good News disposables. In a pinch, they will get the job done, but no way do they compare to the economy, comfort, nor efficiency of a double edge in my opinion!! Thanks for the video! JimG

I’m 58 years old and had shaved with cartridge since the beginning. Started using Schick Hydro 5 in the 1990’s. I started with DE about 2 years ago. I’m a shower shaver. I use DE about 2/3 of the time if I have the time. But when I need super close and fast, I still reach for the 5-blade Schick Hydro and trim around the nose with the DE. I can get as close with DE as I can with the Schick. That said - any disposable cartridge style I’ve tried has been AWFUL!!

I'm a little disappointed that the comparison was between a safety razor and a bottom shelf disposable razor- doesn't really feel like it's comparing like to like. If you pick a low quality disposable, of course the user experience will be bad. What about leading cartridge brands - like Harry's? I want to love DE shaving but I don't know if it's actually more cost effective when you factor in lather soap and other ongoing costs? How much is of it is hype based on it being seen as a hobby? (It's not bad for it to be a hobby but I want to know if its more cost effective)

We've done a ton of these style videos you can check out on our channel. De shaving can be done to save money for sure. It can also turn into a hobby because most people end up enjoying it.

Hey Matt, great review and shave but plz don’t use those crapy disposables. A decent cart razor is the regular Skinguard or Schick Hydro. They are some decent cartridges, expensive and not something you will absolutely love but wayyyyy better than those disposables. Also, I say this with a lot of love and positivity; you are a God with Safety razors, but the cart technique needs a little work 😂

Another great video! But you can tell Matt is wealthy. He thinks a good beginner DE razor starts at $50. You can get really nice ones for half that price!

That cartridge one was one of the worst, there are way better ones to use. To be honest, I’ve never had and red skin or irritation from the cartridge razor I use. Never even knew about double edge razors, will definitely look into this some more. The only time I got red and irritated skin, was with an electric shaver.

I always tell people to go watch the old Gillette ads from the early cartridge days when they tell you the first blade is designed to pull the hair. That’s why it hurts. All the extra blades and lubrication strips in the world arent going to fix that.

Matt, I've been shaving my face for 56 years and I always get a kick out of you young, whippersnapper beginners when you constantly extoll the benefits of DE wet shaving. When I started shaving, there were, of course, no such thing as cartridge or plastic razors. My dad had fought in both World War II and the Korean war. My first razor was the government-issued Gillette my dad first received just before storming the beach at Sicily. Luckily, he kept it because the Army was too cheap to replace it before dad prepared to give his life on the frozen battlefields of Korea. He could've been covered from top to bottom in mud, blood, yuck and mule manure, just as long as he was clean-shaven as per Army regulations. When inspection time came around, I'm sure he wouldn't have cared a flying f... if the razor he shaved with was a DE or cartridge...as long as he passed muster. He also wouldn't have cared about a little redness you could barely tell was there. So, years later, when he gifted me with his old Army razor, I was more than honored to accept it. I shaved with that razor for the next thirty years before even thinking about buying a new one. In the meantime, I've tried cartridge razors, and I never found them to be as horrible as you make them out to be. The Gillette Fusion Proglide Power and the Defender cartridge razors are as good as any DE razor as long as the beard isn't too long. I realize you'll more than likely take this post down as soon as you read it, but if you really want an authentic opinion and aren't too shocked to let others read it...here it is.

Your face, your rules. I'm 54 and spent the first 20 shaving years with the Mach 3, Fusion and other cartridges. I moved over to the DE world when I saw how expensive the cartridges were becoming. But I stay because, for me, it's a significantly better experience. I get a lot less irritation. YMMV, but I've noticed a bigger difference than even Matt has.

I used a brush and shaving soap with the Gillette Fusion for 20 years before I switched to DE. It’s still my favorite part of the shave

Multiple blade cartridges = Norelco / rotary electric razor = skin irritation. 1st blade lifts & tears, subsequent blades attempt clean up. If you're here, then you likely know the ensuing problems caused by this type of shave. BTW, does anyone have a solution to air travel and DE razors? Getting good blades where from a brick and mortar store is almost an impossibility these days.

Firstly double edge is better yes but you were using the cartridge in the same way as the double edge in terms of pressure (before obnoxiously going to the other extreme) come on man... lol. You had so little pressure with the cartridge that of course it was going to skip. Then you had so much pressure of course you were going to get razor burn. I get it you are selling DE products but cartridges aren't THAT bad. Most of my improved results from the switch simply came from the DE camp teaching me how to prepare my face properly for a shave, map/shave with the growth direction of my hair, and care for my skin afterwards. I have tried cartridges since with a greatly improved result. Maybe do the test again with a reasonable amount of pressure and technique.. you know actually try to get a good shave with the cartridge. Cartridges CAN shave well. It's disingenuous to say otherwise. You also sell soaps, brushes, aftershave etc. and provide knowledge that people who cartridge shave could use to improve their experience. Sell that and maybe those people might be more inclined to delve into the world of DE shaving. Meet those people where they are at. Besides, if they aren't doing those things making the switch to DE isn't going to help. Gotta start with a proper foundation. DE isn't the be all and end all. In truth there are pros and cons to both cartridge and DE.

@@xycan8734 Agreed - I would never use that technique with a cartridge and a cartridge has never skipped (for me). Techique should be shorter, firmer swipes - no need for more than 2 passes
