Colonel Hessler (Robert Shaw) leads a Panzer division against US Forces in the Ardennes led by Lt. Col. Dan Kiley (Henry Fonda).
About Battle of the Bulge: Theatrical Release December 16, 1965
In the winter of 1944, the Allied Armies stand ready to invade Germany at the coming of a New Year. To prevent this occurrence, Hitler orders an all out offensive to re-take French territory and capture the major port city of Antwerp.
Battle of the Bulge shows this conflict from the perspective of an American intelligence officer as well as from a German Panzer Commander as this Belgian front offensive could turn the tide of World War II.
Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, Robert Ryan, Dana Andrews, George Montgomery, Charles Bronson and Telly Savalas star in this spectacular recreation of the true and crucial campaign.

I saw this movie in a theater when it first came out. I went with my dad and he got in free because he was a Battle of the Bulge veteran. As a kid, I thought the action was great. I tried to imagine my dad in the fighting. I soon realized, that I had an American hero as a dad! The tank battle at the end of the movie was a stretch. There were no big tank battles in the Bulge. The tank battle looks like it takes place in the Sahara Desert, not the Ardennes. There is some good acting and some quotable lines in the movie. Robert Shaw’s character is loosely based on Joachim Peiper and his 1st SS Panzer Division. Shaw has a great line when asked why his advance is slowing down. He replies, “The Americans are learning to retreat!” Because the Allied forces were stretched so thinly in the Ardennes, it was necessary to pull a “Strategic Withdrawal” to the west and consolidate the front. Dad said that may have been the most accurate depiction in the movie. The big thing the movie got right is that the Germans were short on time and gas. The actions of the Americans and the shortage of fuel, eventually led to the failure of the German attack.

No, that's not the biggest sources of historical inaccuracy. Beginning with the narration, "To the north stood Montgomery's Eighth Army...." when they were in Italy at the time. The film was shot on location in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range and Madrid, Spain, which bear no resemblance to the rugged, heavily wooded Ardennes of Belgium, Luxembourg and Western Germany. Aside from the initial American encounters with the German offensive, the weather during filming was also at odds with the actual battle, which was fought during waves of heavy snow. The film's major tank battle scene, and some other battle scenes, were fought in flat, bare, arid territory. The film creates the false impression that large numbers of American tanks sacrificed themselves against heavy Tiger IIs and, in the process, lured the enemy off course, which caused them to run out of gas. In reality, they were already stranded.

There is also one more accurate thing that I noticed from this clip. The breath clouds are visible when anyone breathes, so you could tell that it was actually cold outside during filming. That's actually something pretty rare in movies. Even Band Of Brothers didn't have that. Of course, there were a ton of inaccuracies in the movie, but it is cool to see a detail like that.

This film was denounced by former President (and Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during WW2) Dwight D. Eisenhower soon after its release in a press conference due to its glaring historical inaccuracies. Instead of snow some paint on the ground, instead of forests some lowland steppes, a Tiger II tank (Patton :D) shown as a secret weapon, although it was already fighting in Normandy in July 1944. This is actually a pretty good war film in it's way. It doesn't show any specific battle during the Bulge but, it does a good job to get across the confusion and the frightened green troops, the Maonedt massacre and even Bastinge. Granted, during the movie those scenes are truly respective representations of the incidents only generalizations. It's very entertaining and i loved it as a 12 yr old. The Germans singing scene actually gave me goose bumps and I even learned the words to the song. For what it us, a good general war movie irrespective of the actual Battle of the Bulge. Just enjoy it, not very many movies vack then were meant to be historically accurate portrays of the specific battles.

The movie did attempt to show the difference in scale of German versus allied tanks, just with different tanks than historical. Now the filming location I think is fair to criticize, especially the final battle. Though the scenes shown here make a good effort, Spain at least has some forests. For the 60s, theres only so much you can do with your cameras to compensate for the weather/lighting conditions. As others have said, enjoy the film for what it is. Regardless of anything else it is entertaining and engaging, highly rated imho.

Yes and no. One thing Hitler did right in this battle is he really kept it hush hush. Nothing on the radio at all so Ultra didn't pick it up. And the Allies really did think the Germans were finished by this time. So sure they missed some things, but it wasn't blatantly obvious. Plus their plan was just plain idiotic so was hard to guess they would do it. But what they should have realized was Hitler knew he was a dead man if they lost the war so no plan was idiotic to him if it had even a 1% chance of success, which is probably all it had.

That is a much more accurate tactic. It’s called over watch. As in, one section/platoon/company is watching over the movement of another. The first element moves up. Then the over watch element moves up to join them and/or advance beyond while the first element becomes the over watch. Repeat until contact with the enemy is made or your objective is reached.

FURY with Brad Pitt is the best Tank movie I have ever seen. Very realistic, at least by the terms of a "movie" and entertainment. I wish the director of FURY would make some more World War II era movies because they did an excellent job. This movie was a big budget film back in the day but the technology is so outdated compared to movies being made in 2024. Technology in film making has come a long way since this movie was made.

Scratch the paint on the frontal armor. Might mangle some exterior parts such as radio antenna if they hit the roof. It’s just a small HE round. Not much bang. Lots of shrapnel in a small area. Need at least a decent sized shaped charge warhead to do anything. Even the bigger bazookas we had didn’t do much unless you got a lucky hit on a track or the engine compartment in the rear.
