Even though the Neo-Geo original is easily accessible nowadays, I still have a soft spot for the Genesis port. Great conversion for a 12MB cart, great interpretations of the original soundtrack and most importantly (which few people know about): the move inputs for the three characters were updated to their FF2/FFS inputs, making them much easier to pull off.
@Silanda5 жыл бұрын
It's interesting how the Mega Drive and SFC (SNES) developers took different approaches to the problem of fitting the game into a 12Mb cart. The MD developers tried to keep most of the presentation from the arcade, but lost two characters, while the SFC developers cut back the presentation, dropped the two plane system, and added some loading screens, but managed fit all the characters in. Personally, I think I prefer the MD version. I've got a soft spot for it though, as it was the first SNK fighter I ever played. I hadn't played the Neo Geo version at the time either, so I didn't miss the removed characters.
@RetroCore5 жыл бұрын
Looking back I do prefer the Mega Drive in the presentation and maybe even in playability but it does sound awful which is a shame. A lot of Neo Geo ports to the Mega Drive sound like crap. They should do since both system use FM Sound.

Nostalgic glasses and all, I love the 1st Fatal Fury! I loved Street Fighter 2, but this game had a charm to it that made it more than the sum of it's parts and was fun to master back in the arcade. The sound was unforgettable as well. Genesis version is what I played before I dreamed of the AES.
@StevenCusic8 жыл бұрын
The first Real bout was my favorite in the series, I really liked the combos and how you could know people into the subway trains and watch it take them away. I had the original on the Genesis my 2nd post street fighter game I ever owned after deadly moves, which at the time I thought was quite good.

It's been a while since I've visited your channel, and once again you've posted an excellent video. The Fatal Fury series has always been one of my favorites next to KOF, Guilty Gear and the likes. The Mega Drive/Genesis version of the original Fatal Fury was actually the first true 16-bit fighter I really got into. Nowadays, I thankfully own a Neo-Geo AES complete with Fatal Fury 1, 2, Special and Real Bout Fatal Fury Special. (As well as several other fighting titles.) I also like to see the footage from other ports like the SNES version (wich IMO is inferior to the Mega Drive version when it comes to gameplay.) Once again, you've delivered with another great video Yakumo.

No problem. Be sure to visit more often :) It's cool owning an AES but boy, it sure does cost a lot to build a good collection.

Indeed guys. I myself own 9 games, with the most expensive one being KOF 2002. (It set me back for about 300 Euros). I wish I could afford some of the titles wich cost a fortune like Samurai Shodown V Special, Garou Mark Of The Wolves, KOF 2003 and of course.... KIzuna Encounter. But alas....

Neo Gunloc Yeah, this is why going the MVS rout is much more sensible. It justy doesn't look as sexy.
@NeoGunloc8 жыл бұрын
That's true, but that also means getting hold of a Supergun set-up of some sorts, or a (non-sanctioned) MVS converter for my AES console. And both of these options still costs quite some cash. Ahh, the life of a collector eh ? ;)
@SomeOrangeCat8 жыл бұрын
SNK was wise to licence so many of their first party games, out to other consoles. They knew the masses weren't going to pay that kind of money for a console, let alone games that each cost about as much as an SNES or Genesis.
@RetroCore8 жыл бұрын
So true. It's just a shame many of the early ports were pretty poor.
@puffolotti4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps somebody else already said it, but to me it looks obvious that in MegaDrive Hwa Jai and Billy Kane are missing because their gameplay requires them getting an item from the audience when some conditions are met. Kinda like Vega in Street fighter 2, who had a move where he was appearing as if he was climbing the cage around the match. They need to be in their own stage, in order to "function" correctly.

Awww, so much nostalgia haha, My dad gave me a Fatal Fury cartridge (I was expecting Mortal Kombat) for my super nintendo as a birthday present, too bad the controls sucks, and the hit detection was pretty bad too, it really was very frustrating and exasperating game, eventually I could dominate the gameplay with its flaws and with the pass of the years I learned that other versions/ports could swap the fighting between a background and a foreground, but never could do that in the snes port. Also I don't remember if I have seen an arcade machine of fatal fury here in Venezuela, never played it in the arcades neither. Nice BoP episode thank you very much! By the way I have to catch up with the vids, but the situation here makes it hard sometimes.
@RedRanger20013 ай бұрын
For me, it's either the AES (expensive in secondary market), the MVS (cheaper, but requires the cartridge adapter if you want to play it in the AES console), or the Neo-Geo CD (cheaper than the AES cartridge, but costs a bit more than the MVS cartridge, and has a long load time if you're playing it on the Neo-Geo CD console)...

I must admit I have a soft spot for this game, much like I have a soft spot for MK1. It's kind of pales in comparison to Street Fighter II, when it comes to controls, but I am one of those "freaks", that love to play fighting games for the story, presentation and characters, not for competition. And in this departments FF1 really delivers. Also, interesting soundtrack and some gameplay gimmicks make this game somewhat more than just another pre-SFII fighting game. NOTE: I know that FF1 was released after SFII, but it seems the difference in release dates was just several months, which means FF1 couldn't be SFII clone in any way and was created as its own game, basically, without trying to ape SFII sensibilities. Interestingly, that while FF1 is much more advanced then SF1, you still can see a lot of common points between two games, especially focus on the presentation and very few playable characters. Though, original Art of Fighting is much closer to the SF1 as far as realization goes. It even has its own "Ryu". I really love presentation of the Fatal Fury 1, with its focus on the story, which usually was largely ignored in other fighting games, its unique soundtrack, with use of voice samples and colorful cast of characters, especially Terry Bogard and Geese Howard. Also, this game was the start of infamous "SNK Syndrome", though it's not exactly as hard as some of the next SNK games. Enemies can be rather cheap, but all of them have weaknesses to certain moves or combinations. You can even cheese Geese, by repeatedly using throw. I remember, once I was even able to beat him without dying. All in all, this game is quite ancient, when compared, even to the games released by SNK itself few years down the line, but it's still somewhat fun and definitely shows potential, which was realized by SNK in its sequels and spin-offs..
@1983parrothead6 жыл бұрын
ShadowSumac MK's FF1 is Time Killers, which was released the same year as MK1, but Discoalucard of HG101 still calls Time Killers a MK clone because of how obvious it looks in comparison.

Got the MVS version, along with most sequels of this game. This was almost a contender for Street Fighter 2 before everyone else jumped on the SF2 clone bandwagon. I fed this one a lot or quarters, but don't have great memories of it now. MVS carts of this could have been bought for 10-15 bucks when neo geo went out of style.

For some reason, when I first played this game on the Mega Drive back in 1993, I thought that couple in the back in Duck King's stage were Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding from the Streets of Rage series. Talk about relating different/unrelated companies and properties back then when I was still a child (plus this game was older in the arcades than Streets of Rage on the Mega Drive so it couldn't be an intended homage either).
@RetroCore8 жыл бұрын
Hehe, pretty interesting but now that you mention it I can see why you'd think that. I'm sure as a kid I thought of really odd things similar to that too.
@Tempora1588 жыл бұрын
Fatal Fury was an evolution of Street Fighter, from its gameplay (no combo, same special move controller motion, similar physics) and presentation (limited character selection, choose from four opponents at the beginning). Unfortunately for SNK, Street Fighter II was a revolution with new designers at the helm. Street Fighter II could have been Fatal Fury if the original designers of Street Fighter didn't leave Capcom to make Fatal Fury for SNK.

hello Retro Core, ever since I told you about which version of Sega Touring Car for Saturn I should buy, my Japanese version came in the mail yesterday. However, I experienced the bottom half of the screen glitching. My system is NTSC and an ST Key cart is inside my system. Will the glitching stop if the game is played on a Japanese Saturn or will the same problem occur?
@RetroCore8 жыл бұрын
If you are using a PAL game you will have the bottom quarter of the screen missing or glitching. But you are using a Japanese game on a US Saturn, right? There shouldn't be an issues. Maybe your ST Card is mistaking the Japanese game as a PAL game?

Retro Core Okay then! Graphics: Many graphical bugs/oddities found throughout the game Some stages don't go through day-night cycle between rounds Rain is between shadow and character layers and looks off. CROPPED SCREEN Lacking animation Most backgrounds have no animation Characters don't have forward/backwards sprites due to cut game mechanic (but that's for later) Most fighters have far less animation Presentation: Cut down intro and ending SNES just has a wall of text for an intro. That's it. No picture. No music. Just text SNES censors the ending as if Nintendo is against you killing Geese Lacking in-game presentation Tiny windows for character screens between matches No image of beaten up opponent when you beat them (but for some reason, they're there along with your beaten up portrait if you fail LOL) Geese introduction literally skimmed over. No character being taken to him. Geese reduced to tiny portrait. Has nothing other than formal outfit etc. Characters don't finish Geese with a special move. They use a generic kick. No flashing health bars when on low HP Audio: THE MUSIC SUCKS nuff said Gameplay: Cut mechanics No dual plane mechanic from the arcade game Lack of 1P vs COM mode Lack of COM vs COM Gimped characters Some characters played outside the main mode lose features they could actually do in the main mode (in 1P vs 2P) This includes: Special Moves Jumping Crouching etc The game plays far worse overall FUCKING LOAD TIMES And probably a whole lot more I missed.

It is really surprising how much of the game aged poorly considering the fact that the team behind it was mostly headed by those who worked on SF II initially. But the good thing is that SNK got around to make an even greater series; which in my opinion is the perfect balance of mechanics and simplicity that maintains relative ease to learn and play. That is, the KOF series.

Scary!, was playing this game yesterday on MAME, and man has the game aged poorly especially when you compare how well SF2 holds up and this game came out after SF2!. The controls just feel sluggish, hit detection is way off, and the amount of damage you take is so unbalanced, you just feel like your never quiet in control and any victory feels like luck more than skill, which just results in a poor gaming experience in 2016. Glad they sorted it out for FF2

Because it was empty, unlike the SF2 machines :-) I got quite good at it and, if playing solo, would get to the end every freaking day. I loved using the glitch in Billy Kane where you can win the fight in two hits or something like that. It was not very good even back then. So no surprise it hasn't aged well. The problem with the two-plane system in this game is the player can't initiate a plane change to dodge an attack or flank the opponent, only the AI opponent can do that (i.e. you change plane only when AI changes plane). Makes the existence of the two-plane system completely pointless for the player until Fatal Fury 2.
