With regards to your comment about the Spectrum version not being “a looker”, colour would have had to have been limited because otherwise there would have been ghastly colour-clash all over the place. The important thing is that it plays well, is fast and you can clearly see what’s going on.
@RetroCore5 жыл бұрын

Tiertex used a company known as Blue Turtle for the sound and graphics on the Master System version, they blame the limited cart size for not being able to squeeze all the arcade screens in. They had the coin op as a reference and every other home conversion available at that point. They also had Mike Hutchinson on their staff, who's coded the CPC version.
@RetroCore3 жыл бұрын
That explains why this isn't a train wreck on the Master System. If Tiertex had ported the game themselves it would be far worse. Personally, I think the Master System port is rather good.

The Amiga version seemed to split the UK press, some claiming it was arcade perfect 🙄 where as others said the coin-op was mediocre to start with and questioning why Elite choose to release a 5 year old title on the Amiga. I really hate reviews claiming home conversions were Arcade Perfect or played just like the Arcade version, when they had changes made and controls were off. C+VG were the only magazine I saw who had the honesty to tell people the gameplay had been altered in the Amiga version and Elite were charging far too much, for such an old title.

I think before the advent of VGA, a lot of EGA DOS games (particularly with multi-axis scrolling) had choppy tile scrolling, maybe due to lack of video memory for page flipping, or enough RAM for a framebuffer. I've also seen this on the original Duke Nukem.

Also, the pseudo-emulated version for PS1 on "Midway Presents Arcade's Greatest Hits: the Atari Collection 2" and two other arcade compilations by Midway (Midway Collection 2 and Arcade Party Pak) will only partially-work on a PS2 (mainly component or RGB) if video settings are set to arcade resolution. Common problem with Midway's retro compilations, as it had games which originally ran on 24KHz monitors (meaning games like PaperBoy on APP would run in 480i). When I get home from out of state, I'll test over composite and s-video and see if the result is the same.

They were also behind the impressive Master System versions of Gauntlet and Impossible Mission, hard to believe when you look at the bulk of their work.

There exists a GBA port of this game, which shares the same cartridge with a remake of Rampage. While I like the port, others don't, and I can kinda see why. The music can get pretty annoying. The GBA was capable of better sound quality. Speaking of sound, it does contain voice samples from the original game, but some of them sound out of place, such as saying "One less customer" when he breaks a window, even if it's the window of a non-subscrober. The hit detection can be a little wonky at times, and the bike veers to the right a-la Desert Bus. Also, the game has some glitches, such as being able to pass through houses, and actually being able to exceed the game's boundaries in some areas. I still like the port, though. What do you think?

I wasn't aware of that version. It would have been nice to add it to the show.

How could Atari go under when they were making original off beat classics like this?

More morons than talent I guess.

There's actually an Apple IIgs version as well, and guess what? It's literally identical to the Apple II version except with more colors. Extremely lazy.

Seriously off target with your appraisal of the BBC/Acorn version I'm afraid. It's woeful in every way. Atari were certainly clever in their approach to game design back in the day. I bet there were a few at Atari that said "How can we release a game where the player is constricted to the lower bottom right hand corner of the screen for much of the game? And when you're not there, you're racing for an ever smaller area in the top right hand corner of the screen!" I like how Atari made something mundane and turned it into a bright, fun and playable game. But not on the BBC. I played the CPC version back in the day and I have to say it was one of my favourite games.

Jason Tennant watching the video the BBC version does look slow but it's very playable, especially when you consider how primitive most BBC games look.
@JimLeonard7 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking the same thing. The BBC version runs slower than the Apple version, so not sure why you gave it praise.
