Honestly, Game Freak really knew what they were doing with Volo's fight. Rather than just remake Cynthia's battle theme, they specifically chose the theme most closely associated with her by the fanbase, the theme that apparently strikes fear into anyone who's played gen 4, to convert into a full-fledged battle theme. Even myself, who's only experience with Cynthia comes in the form of a few Undella Town battles I barely remember after nearly a decade, even I had an "oh shit" reaction

Game Freak does a lot of things wrong, but we can't say they don't try to please the fans. Like you said, they deliberately chose that theme because they know everyone loves it! It's an excellent remix and a great battle theme, although I find the arrangement a little weak. Still a great music though. PS : If you haven't played 4G, you should definitely check out Platinum. If you can't play it on console, you can play that region in PokeMMO. This game is a must-play ^^.

Not only is Volo an amazing twist villan, this theme is amazing. If you squinted you could tell that volo was the villan, from his obsession with pokemon and especially arceus, but he also sent out gible in the temple, that was excellent foreshadowing. And his motives actually make sense, as you see how he longs to see arceus, just as many in the real world would do anything to see the gods they worship. Honestly my favorite twist villan in gaming ever.

I absolutely wish I didn’t get spoiled on Volo as a twist villain. I probably would’ve gotten suspicious as soon as he started talking about Giratina, but still, it would’ve had more impact if I got the full grand reveal. Still a pretty tough fight. The fact that there were three phases threw me for an absolute loop. I was already down to a couple Pokemon after beating Volo himself, so I had to use several revives on my Zoroark to get through the first Giratina phase. And then there was a third phase; I knew I was boned. Second attempt went more smoothly, getting through Volo with minimal casualties, but Giratina’s second phase still got me down to one Pokemon. I risked it all on a Strong Style Shadow Ball from Zoroark… and that was the final blow. Felt so damn good.

Volo and I literally had a back and forth, he’d take out one of my Pokémon, I’d take out his. It got down to my starter and Garchomp, and I pulled through, my starter only having a tiny bit of hp left. If it weren’t for Samurott being pretty bulky I would’ve lost, but I was able to revive panic.

When I say this battle made my jaw drop all the way to the floor and took years off my life….. …..I had a sense that I was going to need my A-team when the story was going back up to Spear Pillar. However, my team simply wasn’t ready for both Volo AND both formes of Giratina back-to-back with no rest or restoration in-between. I’m more of a casual trainer with some expertise, so this one stretched my limits to their breaking points. Seriously, this has to be one of the rudest things GameFreak has ever done (I mean that in a complimentary way). I love the reveal of Volo as the chief antagonist and the inadvertent reason you were sent to Hisui. And I love that it really feels like the battle of your life and a perfect climax to this story. 100/10.

I remember facing Cynthia back in Diamond for the first time when I was like 8. When she sent out Spiritomb as her first mon I genuinely thought there was something wrong with my game because I have NEVER seen a Pokemon that looked like *THAT* up until that point. Then realizing that it was weak to nothing (Ghost/Dark during Gen 4, one of the only combos to be weak to nothing and yet be immune to 3 whole types) made me panic. When this motherfucker pulled up with a Spiritomb and the theme kicked in, I shit you not I cowered in fear. Then I remembered that Fairy-types exist. Still took me like 5 tries to beat this asshole.

Most tense fight ever. We kept trading Pokémon, my Samurott and his Garchomp clashing heads MULTIPLE times until he switched it out. Rhyperior takes out Togekiss, only to faint to Roserade, who falls to my Staraptor. Staraptor dies to Garchomp, I bring in Samurott, and he switches. My trusted Zoroark, whom I trained so hard takes out 2 of his Pokémon, then falls to Garchomp, as it RAMPAGES my team. Only my Samurott left, it manages to live through a strong style attack, able to set up an agile style swords dance into a Aqua Tail, living on red HP. And then, comes Giratina, who I had to spam revives to try and live his MULTIPLE PHASES. I hate to say it, but this moment for me was even tenser than my battle with N and Ghetsis back in Black and White. A true finale.

I'm playing Pokemon Reborn (awesome fangame that's finally complete as of last month) and not only is it consistently difficult, but there are _many_ boss trainer battles that are back-to-back with no healing in between. I can only hope Scarlet and Violet amp up the difficulty, or even offer a challenge mode a la B2/W2.

This is the hardest battle in Pokemon history. It took me over 30 tries just to beat Volo, and another 20 to get past giratina. Anyways, the music is amazing.

Ong, this is a beautiful song. I remeber hearing it in the game for the first time, and I have not played through platinum so I had no connection to it whatsoever, but holy hell it still made me go "oh. I'm fucked." And just hearing it in its entirety out of the battle, it's amazing. They clearly put alot of heart into it.

I think my team must've been very over-levelled by that point coz I didn't struggle too much, though it did catch me off guard and slightly scare me that there was no healing between Volo and Giratina, but geez, what a brilliant battle and music!! Agreed with everyone's comments, they did a wonderful job!

i now realize i could have given my sylveon mystic fire and made this battle so much easier. i kept leading with it to take out spiritomb and then having roserade come in. it didn't always go for poison jab immediately, sometimes going for spikes if i had used calm mind but either way the lack of effective moves against it effectively made sylveon useless for the rest of the fight unless i healed it up

This battle was one of very few in recent years where I only just barely survived my first attempt with one Pokemon still standing… And it was my Hisuian Goodra, which I had evolved from a Goomy. I remember it had a very rough start, as it fainted to so many things as a Goomy, due to how slow and fragile it was at that stage… And now it’s at a higher level than my starter and can tank everything that the game throws at it… I’m proud of the lad for being the last one standing, especially against Volo and that damn Giratina

I really wish I hadn't been overleveled for this fight... was around level 75 when I got here, and he definitely left a couple marks before Giratina, but I was Star level 8 by this time, so I bought Max Revives before I got here... and Ursaluna/Luxray did the rest with Play Rough. Next playthrough I won't try so hard before I finish the story. ;v;

@@brenduck For some reason I can never get floatzel to work on my team? Every time I try to use one , it's not bulky enough and I can never keep it alive. Used a Vaporeon in my team this run.

aqua jet increases movement speed + insane speed stat already for really good stab chip damage, and then if anything survives you can strong style aqua tail to finish it off usually. rarely ever gets hit and is probably one of my main two assets in the post-post-game battle challenges

Listen. A lot of battle and area themes in Pokemon are meant to be scary or imposing, but this is the only theme in the franchise specifically composed to make *GROWN MEN SHIT THEIR PANTS.*

I feel kinda bad that I didn't struggle as hard as I should've with this sequence of battles. Hisuian Goodra is just too good. Obviously loved the twist and this climax and theme though.

My first few attempts at volo here were...rough, to say the least. This was the first ever time i was actually terrified of a boss in a pokemon game. On my first try only my gliscor and dialga made it to giratina, and i thought it was over...then that fakeout happened and i was steamrolled. Learning from my mistakes, i constructed a plan. Catching an alpha blissey and garchomp, and teaching my gliscor ice fang. Courtney absoluty fucking carried her whole team on try 2 and my garchomp got the final kill. Most epic fight in history.
