Hey Indy and crew this is a question for "out of the trenches" what happen to the trenches after the war ended? I couldn't find any books about it at my local library and I'm afraid looking it up online will give me the wrong answer. Keep up the great work from Michael. PS I don't have an account for Twitter so is this okay.

At first, not much at all. Until most of the belligerents signed actual peace treaties, which didn't happen for many months and sometimes years after the armistices of 1918-19 were penned, they kept the trenches in case peace negotiations broke down and war resumed. Most soldiers on both sides didn't return home until long after November 1918. After the treaties actually ended war and everyone demobilized, the vast majority of trenches were slowly filled-in to allow the resumption of productive enterprise by the landowners. Most trench lines are now growing crops as they did before the war. However, many stretches of trench line, especially in France, remain because there are too many unexploded shells or toxins from poison gas to justify the cost of redevelopment. Some trenches are also just not in places where people cared to use the land anyway, so their trenches slowly rot away from natural causes alone. Many choice areas were intentionally retained as memorials to the war, cemeteries especially, and their trenches either restored, maintained, or allowed to be reclaimed by nature. The channel has some videos on these locations.

I hate to be nitpicky, but I think I must point out a sad mistake - the name of the poet was Anna Akhmatova. Andreyevna was her patronymic name. Patronymics in Russian are used either with the first name or as a familiar nickname (e.g. Lenin is usually referred to as Ilyich), but never with the surname only. In other words, her full name is A.A. Akhmatova, you can call her Anna Akhmatova or Anna Andreyevna (Akhmatova) if you mean to show some respect, but not the way you have put it. Still, you have done a great job, thanks a lot!

She was born Gorenko, Akhmatova was her nome de plume. She took it in honour of her Tatar grandmother, of whom she knew little, by the way: Anna even claimed her grandmother was a descendant of Akhmat-khan. Which was unlikely. They say she had to made up a pen name because her father, Adrey Gorenko, had asked young Anna not to bring disgrace upon their family name with poetry.

Kristian Trayanov it was designed in 1891, and was used in both world wars. In the first world war as the 1891 model and in the second world war as the 1891/30 (a new model)
@KSmithwick1989
@KSmithwick1989 6 жыл бұрын
Epitoma Rei Militaris "Three Line Rifle" is the Russian colloquial term, it refers to the old imperial measurement system (1 line=1/10 inch). Mosin-Nagant M1891 is the proper name and "Mosin" is the colloquial trade-name, at least in Texas. I haven't heard any dealers use the term "Three Line Rifle", one even got confused when I mentioned it. The "Three Line Rifle" term was dropped shortly after the small-bore rifle commission cleared the rifle for production. The Russian weapon designation system follows the Weapon Type, Designer, and Model Designation. Regarding Mosin-Nagant as colloquial is basically the equivalent of calling the K (Kalashnikov) in AK-47/AKM as colloquial. The weapon's designer's last name is actually part of the weapon's official designation.
@ShaDOWDoG667
@ShaDOWDoG667 6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Smithwick Head of the commission, General Chagin, ordered subsequent tests held under the commission's supervision, after which the bolt-action of Mosin's design was ordered to production under the name of 3-line rifle M1891(трёхлинейная винтовка образца 1891 года). This is the same as the M1 Garand being designated as the "U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M1" and not the M1 Garand, everyone calls it such but it still isn't the correct designation of the rifle.
@KSmithwick1989
@KSmithwick1989 6 жыл бұрын
It's actually a little different, because of the shift to the designation Vintovka Mosina (Rifle Mosin) M1891. The Russian designation system was under a process of change. The old Imperial system of measurements was being phased out, think along the line of British artillery pre- and post WW2. Pre-war British artillery was measured by standard shell weight (ex: 25 pdr, 6 pdr, 17 pdr), post-war the system was designated by bore diameter. Referring the U.S. designation system is a straw man argument, because the Russian system uses the designer surname as part of the official designation. Changes to the Russian indexing system, meant the 3-line designation was dropped. The wiki article you got your reference from is full of flaws and misconceptions. In fact as a collector of that pattern of rifle, I was recently discussing the rifle's history to a friend of mine that is interested in becoming a collector. I opened the wiki article for reference purposes, then notice that someone did the bad edit that currently up. The reference section is worthwhile, although there is some questionable edits. Such as ".... invented by Colonel Rogovtzev, by Lt.-General Chagin's Commission, Captain Mosin and small-arms manufacturer Nagant, therefore it is only fair to call it Russian 3-line rifle M1891.[citation needed]". No professional publication would accept subjective statements such as "therefore it is only fair to call it Russian 3-line rifle M1891". Is pretty apparent someone that didn't fully understand the subject was making edits. Recognize that some of these people don't even make an effort to properly transliterate the designations from Cyrillic. Which is telling that these people are copying and paste material that they are often incapable of reading.

Great video ! I was told about those "trench sweepers" in middle school, the teacher said that these soldiers were used to destroy any remaining resistance in the trenches or straight up commit warcrimes by killing wounded soldiers that were left in the trench after attacks or that were trying to surrender.I was also told that they recruited maniacs, criminals and mad persons for the job. I don't know if it's true.

As far as I know, there was two kinds of trench special troops in french army. The "trench cleaners", as Romain noticed were there to "clean" the trenches after/during an assault. And the "trench raiders", who were there to make prisonners mostly at night. They were not the same soldiers.

And, guys-guys-guys, Akhmatova (nee: Gorenko) actually had a first name ;) It is - Anna. (Andreevna is, actually, her "father's name" - the "daughter of Andrey"). By the way, at the time she was married to another famous Russian poet - Nickolai Gumilyev, himself a WWI hero with His Majesty's Own Uhlans, and recipient of 2 Soldier's Crosses of St. George (Russian Empire) - 4th and 3rd Class - decoration, of which Akhmatova herself was rather sarcastic at the time...

The poet's name is Anna (Andreevna) Akhmatova, where "Andreevna" is the middle name. In Russian, a middle name is given after the name of a person's father, in this case - Andrey. It's most commonly used as a formal and polite thing (i.e. a child would call their teacher Anna Andreevna, same is for business meetings or for people who don't know each other very well). Just a little correction there.

2:38 Hah, that picture is actually from after the main action of WW1, from the Latvian independence war/civil war/Latvian-Soviet war/whatever. The name painted on its side is "The Curronian" like someone from the western region of Latvia, Kurzeme/Curronia. The aftermath conflicts of WW1 are quite interesting. You see the already very much improvised solutions especially common on the Eastern Front taken to a whole new level. In the Latvian War Museum you can see things like a signal rocket gun made from a stick and some wire. That thing wouldn't look out of place in a Mad-Max-style post-apocalypse.

That armored truck in 2:39, has ''kurzemnieks" writen on it which is in latvian. It is a word for men who are coming from Latvian region Kurzeme (Kurland). This truck was a war trophy taken after Latvian freedom battles in 1919. And the pucture is taken short before USSR ocuppation of Latvia in 1940. Because it still was in latvian army arsenal then.
