I went back and played through this again yesterday and was blown away. It is probably the single greatest FPS war mission/scene of all time. I’d never seen a game capture the terrifying essence of war like this. This is truly a work of art and makes it look like two entirely different studios worked on BF1 and BFV.

The implementation of the characters' names are what resonated with me most, in addition to their birthdays; being that I am lead to wonder of these "random" soldiers' stories, who they were, what they did before the war, if they were married, who they left behind when the telegram was sent stating that he'd been killed in action on the Western Front. The manner in which the game presents a simple name and birthday further humanizes those of the Triple Entente (British, American, Canadian, French etc.)... Though I can't help but also wonder of those men whom the tank gunner is mowing down, for example, as they flee... Despite being the enemy, they have names and birthdays of their own. This content is unprecedented, and I hope that the player walks away with more than just a kill-count...
@lars4217
@lars4217 7 жыл бұрын
I think it would be great if the developers would implement a feature that displays the names of the man's you killed. to make sure you know that your enemy is just a human too. Ps. Please keep in mind that English is not my native language and I couldn't think of a more suitable word for great.

Man I love the way Dice made this. The A.I feel like real people, some are fighting but others are actually scared and hurt. It doesn't feel like most games where it's just endless A.I. I actually felt bad watching this. Knowing this actually happened. I love the concept where you play as multiple people then play as the main. It felt so real. I love how Battlefield shows you that war is pointless. The campaign is what I'm most excited for and hope it's as good as what I was seeing. Great Job Dice! Oh my gosh Great job!.

I love the way DICE chose to present the gameplay and story. To having you play as multiple soldiers dying in the midst of combat until you got to the real guy, that's great! I don't I've ever seen a game do something like that before! It helps you immerse yourself in this war where everyone's getting killed left and right! The single player department over at DICE has seen some improvements. I like what I see!

I REALLY like this approach to death in a game. I'm just surprised nobody did it sooner in a military shooter. I know they did it in games like ZombiU, but I've never seen it done in a game like Battlefield. It really works well at the whole "failure state" problem in gaming. Overall, it looks great and like they really captured the atmosphere and are trying to humanize the soldiers. This looks good.

In other words, they were shellshocked, that happened to lots of soldiers during the war. It isn't because they are dying or actually want to die it paralyzed them and they couldn't control it. @@Gage-nt It's a bit inconsistent because the one who played this shot one downed soldier but then spared another. However, if you are in the middle of this brutal battlefield you should end any downed enemy in your sight. For one they are suffering and bleeding out, I know I would want a quick shot to the head as my death instead of me slowly bleeding out. Another reason, you are in the middle of a battlefield, you don't know if the downed could pull a sidearm out and shoot you in the back as you are trying to take down their comrades. If there wasn't a battle going on you should show mercy but downed enemies can be just as deadly as enemies who aren't downed. However, I took this all into a "what if this was in real life" so it might not hold up that well.

“We came from all over the world. So many of us thinking this war would be our right of passage-our great adventure. Let me tell you: It was no adventure. New killing machines, like the tank, changed the shape of the war overnight. Luckily they were mostly on our side. Mostly. Instead of adventure, we found fear and in war, the only true equalizer was death. They push… We push… Every once in awhile, we pushed hard enough that the light breaks through the clouds - so a world beyond the war glimmers. Just out of reach.... The war is the world. And the world is the war. But behind every gunsight is a human being. We are those people. We are the jaded. And we are the naive. We are the honorable. And the criminal. We are the bound for Legend. And the lost to history. We are the knights of the sky. The ghosts in the desert. And the rats in the mud. These are our stories.”

I've been writing a critical Analysis on this campaign for my WWI class. I really like the details. The reference to Harlem Hellfighters.. like, the main character's helmet is French... In history, the US didn't want to be beside the blacks, but the French were happy to take them... saw them as equals on that battlefield... it really gave me chills.. idk. A really Critical detail that wouldn't be noticed had one actually know it. I absolutely loved the prologue. Very real.

a war like this will never happen. we as humans in today's society have accept that one nationality or one country isn't better than another. nationalism and patriotism isn't toady's words. In a world were economic strangleholds that can destroy a nation, there is no need to use men and taint the earth with red. also with new technology such as social media and computerized weapons, a major war is only a call to annihilation and no victory .

That stuff actually resonates with me. Even though it's a game it actually makes me slightly uncomfortable. Games like Company of Heroes for example. When I'm playing CoH2 with my friend, I like all the explosions, but when you drop an arty into a group of soldiers, listening to them cry and such actually makes me not want to play the game anymore. I enjoy ultra immersion but sometimes it's too much. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing by any means, it's all a personal thing.

Keith Davis I actually find it fine. The devs and game writers took their times to convey their feeling about war, it's cruelty, the helplessness of the soldiers, the crass of the battlefield. They may be pacifist and it the game hammered it in your face a bit too much, but the precision on how it's done is impressive.

I'll definitely agree to that. It takes a lot to move me. I've seen executions from ISIS, the wars over there, people getting ruined left and right and that is what it is. But once that add that element of humanity to it, masterful. I guess it lets me know I'm not desensitized.

It's still a possibility, though. I think that the reason all of the people he plays as are black is because if you survive, you'll get to proceed to the next location that we can see in this preview and eventually get the cut-scene. Another thing that can back this up is the text that appears right after he takes control of the guy after the tank crew, it says: ''NEW OBJECTIVE - HOLD AT ALL COSTS''. Maybe when you survive the phases it tells you to move on to the next one and that's why it's there, otherwise it would be rather pointless.

I don't think so, the first guy, the MG guy and the tank guy had to die to get the final cinematic. The other ones, thought, i don't really know. Unless you can survive with the first guy long enough for him to become the guy of the final cinematic (both were black)

Why do they always give this kind of playthrough to someone who feels like they only just started playing FPS games the night before? I know it's to show off the game and not his gameplay per-say and I'm not expecting 360 no scopes or anything but it's cringy to watch at times...
@ralfidude

So ignoring nades under your feet and shooting your own team is also what they want to show off? I mean I get what you are saying but I'm more or less referring to the fact that they play like they themselves don't understand how an FPS works.

I've never seen this narrative structure on a game before, you just don't die and respawn to try again, every man has only one chance, and you will die for no good reason. This looks a lot like more an anti-war FPS game on the single player campaign. Didn't see this coming, can't wait for the release!

Man WW1 was cool, semi automatics, fully automatics. That gun straight out of Metro 2033. I feel so bad, I didn't know how many African Americans fought though, a shame a video game has to tell the truth in 2016. Respect to all the Americans that died though, can't wait to play.

There were approximately 65,000,000 soldiers involved in WW1. Maybe 34,000 max were black, or .05%. For every 2000 white europeans, there was MAYBE 1 black guy. Not to piss on the service of these people, but, it's a MASSIVE over-representation, as usual. Let's see them make a game about the Zulus and have 25% of the characters be french canadian. That's what they did here.

I just read the comments, and everyone is complaining that the character shown here was black. I don't have anything against anyone's opinions, but isn't the story going to showcase several characters from different countries and their stories? It would be odd if only the black guy and his team is shown, as the would misrepresent a load, but I don't think that the campaign is going to go in that direction. I could just be stupid though xD
