If some of you were thinking that 200 yards was a bit far for open sights, in 1972 Marine Corps recruits shot their M14 with open (peep) sights STARTING at 200 meters. Then we dropped back to 300 meters and then finally 500 meters. Some of us were hitting the 12 inch bullseye regularly and at no time did we use a shooting bench or sand bags. We shot offhand, standing on the dirt at 200 meters, then shot while kneeling and sitting at 300 meters and then laying in the dirt in the prone position at 500 meters...all with just a peep sight and the rifle sling around our arms for stability!

Apparently, basic training recruits use red dot sights for qualification these days

The CMP is getting greedy with their pricing these days. I don’t care if they do it with their auction page, but don’t screw Americans who’re trying to do what the CMP was created for.

The funny thing, the CMP has been trying to get out of the gun business for 25 years. It's a distraction from their actual mission, marksmanship. But the money in the gun sales is just too good to give up yet.
@inspectorkemp74392 ай бұрын
thats curious, when they can no longer sell $2-$3 million a year of surplus, how will they continue to fund their mission statement?

@Front-Toward-Enemy2 ай бұрын
@@inspectorkemp7439 They cant. The only other money maker they have is the CMP matches. But unfortunately, in my opinion, those styles of matches aren’t appealing to the younger generations. Who prefer fast paced matches.
@Boofi-quat2 ай бұрын
In actual fact, instead of being privately owned the CMP needs to be an actual gov program again, whose dual mission is to foster civ marksmanship and distribute surplus rifles amongst the population; all this must be done at no cost to the citizen participants.
@Front-Toward-Enemy2 ай бұрын
@@Boofi-quat thats a good way to insure the CMP completely fails. The Government can’t run anything better than the private sector.

Thanks for the tour. I'd go for the M-1 chambered in .308. Not collectible but definitely shootable.
@Front-Toward-Enemy2 ай бұрын
They are great for re-enactors. .308 blanks are a lot cheaper than 30-06 blanks. And because they aren’t original, nobody cares if it gets dinged up.

The front hand guard on the M1 rifle is supposed to be 'loose', there was, at one time, a letter sent to armorers NOT to modify the hand guard in order to 'snug it up' in service rifles, it was to allow for expansion. But, in National Match competition rifles not subjected to the weather, securing the front hand guard was a 'given'.
@kenschultz38362 ай бұрын
military surplus rifles should not be 1k or more , defeats the purpose of disposing military surplus. Only rich people can afford these rifles , way too much for a single shot bolt action or a 8 round semi that is older then 80 years. Nonsense prices, I know there is a historical side of this , but these days only rich folk can afford these. How about offering a Veterans a free rifle??? No? that's right its all about PROFIT!

I have a garand and it was reasonable on the price. More or less. I was excited to see the Kraigs coming. Then i saw they were pruced 30% over market for some junkers. Guess only people who live near a store get any chance. Anyway seems to me the cmp is done. If they are going to charge stupid prices for the everyone can get one page then i will just go to gun broker.

Update as of August 12th 2024. All 1903 are gone and will now be sold on auction site. Source my brother bought the last one and it was that trainer one in this video. The 1917 normally go for $600-$700 they had them for $1300. DO NOT BUY. The Kreigs were overpriced by $400 also listed at $1300. The only guns worth it are the m1 garands now. I got two 1941 M1s for $900 each.

Thanks for the update… I read on the forums and saw that. In past years, CMP marks items sold out regularly, then returns them for sale days/weeks/months/years later as applicable. The thing is, they recently came out with a newsletter stating they only had a limited supply left. Who knows if there will be more M1903s because they get them mostly from veterans organizations.
