Well battleships cost three times as much as aircraft carriers and have half the firepower and less power projection so it was a good switch
@Denton19528 жыл бұрын
+William Poole battleships don't have "half the firepower." Even carrier Admirals acknowledge that battleships have greater firepower within their damage radius. 1000 shells, 9 guns at 2 shells per minute. Carriers--up to 100 planes, not all of them for combat, launching maybe 4 at a time and you have to wait for their return between sorties. Penetration is also a factor--missiles can penetrate how much concrete again? The 16" shells can break through 30 ft. Carriers have greater range. That was the tradeoff.
@SherlockHolmes0008 жыл бұрын
Battleships do not cost three times as much as aircraft carriers. An Aircraft carrier is a floating city with thousands of marines/crew members, that costs a fortune to maintain, and require specialized training for aircraft/pilots/nuclear technology. Every aircraft used on an aircraft carrier also costs a fortune, as well as the ordinance used to strike from them. A battleship could level an entire city from 20 miles away with sustained 16 inch bombardment over a period of a week for far less cost than sending pilots/cruise missiles. The main usage of an aircraft carrier is simply for range, nothing more. The reason for the disbanding of battleships is actually to a change in war doctrine, battleships cause collateral damage, and people today don't have the stomach for war, and the idea of civilian losses frighten them.

Steve Forsyth If you rewatch the movie (or listen to the director's commentary) you can see that the aliens were not here to destroy earth...or even to attack. They are not even equipped for a military operation. Not everything is known about them...but they are some form of a crashed scientific expedition that has lost its communications, and wants to hide in the water until it can figure out how to phone home...and miscommunication and the navy mess up their plans, more or less. So its like a science or mining group making due with minimal weaponry... They're not entirely peaceful but they're not very warlike, either. And then it all escalates and gets out of hand...

noobkiller117 Where in the movie is this?

Those might be scenes of our aliens attacking other planets. At any rate, its far from a clear statement that the aliens were here merely for refuge. Alien mind melds I guess can be confusing.

@TheFates6668 жыл бұрын
+Lady Deadpool 💋 That's why I've always loved the Covenant in Halo. They always try to just go for glassing from orbit if possible. Also spawns a lot of my favorite quotes, like Master Chief's musings in the books about how the Spartans ALWAYS won on the ground but that didn't help when the covenant could just stay in space.
@Lady_Deadpool8 жыл бұрын
Bring back the Battleships The problem with that is I can't think of any resource found on earth that aliens couldn't find or easily grow/make themselves. If it's ores like iron and copper etc then the same materials and ores can be found all over our solar system seeing as all the planets, moons and asteroid fields etc were made from the same debris that make up our planet too. If it's something like trees or water? Seriously? How hard is it to grow a tree? The moon Europa around Jupiter is made up of mostly ice and the size of a moon! There is even ice on Mars. If they just want to move in to our planet without destroying the environment then they still can easily take us out from orbit by just introducing a virus with no cure or at least hard to cure. Shouldn't e too hard for them to find something like it with their advance tech/science. Hell there are viruses now on earth that we humans can't find a cure for or hard to over come once infected. Infact when I think about it is there any reason for an alien race to WANT to kill us off?

@mygoatisdead10 жыл бұрын
Caleb Mayfield Caleb, not true my friend . Modern shells can't do a damn thing to Missouri's armour -- not a shell from the 5 inch gun, which is the biggest they have now. In fact, it's arguable that a anti-ship missile wouldn't punch a hole in the armor either. But that doesn't matter, all the missile has to do is do a top down strike, or smash the superstructure. This question has been asked many times in numerous military forums, and the answer is always the same. I encourage you to look it up if you doubt, but it's a decent question for sure...

Only reason Battle ship are not in real use to day is because of modern Air power and long rang mission. Upgrade a WW2 Battle ships with a defensive system to counter that, like say the USS North Carolina, and It will crush any modern day ship in a fight. Hell I would love for them to create a modern day battle ship with anti air defenses and Modern day long range guns, yes guns fuck missiles battle ships need big ass gun. Hell finish developing the rail gun and come up with a battle ship sized one and slap them on that will make the battle ship relevant again.

Or their homeworld simply had far more numerous natural obstacles, considering those ships could jump and primarily catapults their heavier munitions rather than direct fire - by extension this could mean their hull was produced to stop indirect munitions from digging in rather than the brute force approach of the battleship.

How long does really take to reload those canons?
@musketeersmadhouse22628 жыл бұрын
takes about 30secs to reload those 16" guns, the first salvo was at 1:13 and second salvo was at 2:12 give or take. The longer duration of reload, due to the explosion on the third turret and near the second.
@chillyfirefx21748 жыл бұрын
I heard it was 35 secs, or maybe that's just the Japanese

The bismark should have been used
@peterson70828 жыл бұрын
BoomShakalaka Neither would make 'too much' of a difference other than what the damage the Missouri is creating already. There is however, one major difference: the Iowa class (USS Missouri is the 3rd ship of the class) salvo weight can fire 24,000lb of 'lead'. The Bismarck and Tirptiz could only make 14,000lb per salvo each. This means it could potentially take longer than necessary, and result in unnecessary human deaths.

@EEProductionsEJW8 жыл бұрын
don't know why everyone loves the Bismark class battleships. the Iowa was superior in every way 1: Iowa has 16" guns while Bismark had 15" 2: Iowa had more guns 3: Bismark had better optics, but Iowa had better radar 4: Iowa could blind fire it's guns, Bismark couldn't 5: Iowa rounds where 1000lbs heavier and still travel the same speed as Bismarck projectiles bismark/tirpitz was shit compared to the iowa

Pacific Rim- has giant robots fighting alien monsters (kind of like Evangelion) Battleship- has a small contingent of the world's navy in battle with alien spaceships. PS you shouldn't sink two battleships just to kill an Angel..

The last Iowas to be in service had Tomahawk and Harpoon missile launchers with 4 Phalanx CIWS, combine that with GPS, artillery and sheer armor that ship is unstoppable if escorted properly.
@musketeersmadhouse22628 жыл бұрын
HeadsUp02 yes she is a great ship, but we must never quote that a ship is "unstoppable", for ill fate follows, either way its a machine it can be stopped and destroyed by man or nature. End of the day the battleships were phased out of service due to their aging hulls and high maintenance cost, this is a similar story to the advanced blackbird that was put away before its time was done.
@putzthewondersloth8 жыл бұрын
You're right. It's a futuristic alien ship (which would be designed to withstand multiple environments) versus a WWII-era battleship (which was designed for pretty much close to medium-range ship-to-ship encounters on the sea). It's basically your jack-of-all-trades ship in the alien one vs. the master of one trade in the Missouri. Throw in a little suspension of disbelief and you can enjoy the fight.

I love this American optimism. You can even make failures in Vietnam and Korea look like victories. Meanwhile here in Poland our films are always masochist where a lot of polish people die. We have tens of films about our biggest failure which is Warsaw Uprising. And even in films where we have won always more Polish people die. I must say American storyline in films is mostly piece of crap but I love this motivating optimism and special effects.

Reasons unfortunately the BB isn't in service 1.) Cruisers and Destroyers have same amount of firepower 2.) Hard to produce and maintain. 3.) Extremely expensive to build and maintain 4.) Sitting duck when having to fire 5.) Effective fire support range is limited. Missiles can cover continents.
