The Texas is just finishing up in dry dock and it looks great. But what a difference a couple of decades make in the look of a battleship. The North Carolina looks like a modern ship. The Texas looks like a throwback to a previous era.

The messed up thing is that NC actually *doesn't* look like a modern warship. Most artillery ships now are actually more missile ships, and they largely have one of two designs - either the heavily raked nose of the 1970s/1980s designed ships, or the tumblehome of next gen radar avoidant ships like the Zumwalts. NC is too beautiful, too many curves and soft edges, to be modern. She's from a better era. That being said, the most modern looking USN BBs were actually the South Dakotas. The Iowa's are also too curvy to fit with today's navy, but the SoDaks are strangely sharp for their era.

@@chrisphoenix77 Well maybe I should say they look like the starting point for more modern ships, especially when comparing to ships like the Texas. Of course Texas being part of the dreadnought ship construction, they must of been considered a modern ship for the times. Dreadnoughts still were mounting casemate guns as if they were still expecting ships to engage in close in broadsides like the old sailing ships of the line. Time and technology marches on.

The North Carolina was a major technical leap forward in the constructive construction of battleships, after the restrictions of the Washington Naval Conference of 1923 were lifted. The reference is to the difference between the USS Texas and the USS North Carolina. It's amazing what a 30-year difference can make. The USS North Carolina was a major stepping stone toward the construction of the USS Iowa Class of Battleships.

Visited this craft a few years ago, having never stepped foot onto any type of naval vessel….only boat I’ve been was a 14’ outboard I boat used she the children were young! Touring the USSNC brought an entirely new realized respect for our sailors….i banged my right shins 3x in an hour and a half onboard ….going through those bulkheads…..how they did it day in and day out….in rolling seas and battle stations….God Bless each and every one of them….and bless you for your selfless service!

I did the same in the early 60's! My mom said that the first time we went to the ship, I went running from the ramp to the starboard side of the ship screaming that I wanted to see the battle ship. Shrieking like an idiot and pointing at another boat out on the river I collapsed in disappointment. Took a few minutes and threats from my dad to get me to realize we were already on the ship. I was so small, I didn't realize that we were already ON the battleship NC. My parents were suitably embarrassed I'm sure. Even after 4 times on the Showboat, I still get excited, I just don't run around screaming about it. Ahhh, good times!

I have visited USS North Carolina several times over the past three decades. Since her in place refit she is a very beatiful warship and presented very well. The USS Alabama is also very well presented. . This coming summer I plan on visiting the USS New Jersey after she returns from dry dock. Been a long time since Ive been aboard her. As an added bonus USS Olympia is right across the Delaware River so I will visit her as well. Also want to pay the Brig USS Niagara in Erie. Going to be an awesome summer !!!

She's not an Iowa class battleship, but that's an easy mistake to make since by outward appearance they are very similar. She is the lead ship of the North Carolina class of 2 ships (the other was the USS Washington which unfortunately wasn't preserved) . She's around 160 feet shorter than the Iowa class, and is armed with 16 inch x 45 caliber main guns vs the Iowa's are 16 inch x 50 caliber (longer range but not necessarily more accurate)

where the hell are three of her guidance antennas on top of their Gun directors? the one on the after director is there but the bow and two side director ones are missing. allot of these museums need to take a page from the USS KIDD museum. when they restored the KIDD back to her WWII configuration. ANYTHING that was missing they fabricated themselves and placed it back on the ship so it at least looked like it should. they could fabricate the missing antennas out of mesh screen and make their frames from Aluminum sheet and restore them into position so the ship looks right at least.

Every battleship is not forgotten, and they can be reactivated at any time as required by U.S. Navy regulation, and the time may soon come for them to be reactivated, upgraded, and once again sail into war.

No, they won’t. Obsolete when they were built.
@fenrirgaming37
@fenrirgaming37 Ай бұрын
@@jimmiles33 If you think they're obsolete, then you are mistaken. Even to this day, they are the only ships outside of our aircraft carriers with the highest survivability. Not to mention their main weapons are still the most powerful naval artillery in the world. As for their other armaments and systems, they can easily be upgraded and brought up to modern standards. There is a reason why they are maintained, as it is required by U.S. Navy regulation that they can be reactivated at any time. So to say that they are obsolete when they were built is wrong. They can easily take on any modern ships and have a more than decent chance of survival, especially if their anti-air and anti-missile defenses are upgraded.
