Video has been donated to Nauticus by Thomas Winters. This video was taken from DDG-39 USS MacDonough during Desert Storm & Shield. It shows unrepping with the Wisconsin.There are a few shots of jet fly-bys. This is a piece of history of the Battleship Wisconsin that has been preserved for future generations. Enjoy and thank you Thomas!

Its 59,000 and some for her Wisconsin is also bigger and heavier then her sisters she is the most advanced and fastest ship even in today's navy. The navy even in 2023 is still calling Wisconsin the most powerful naval ship in the US arsenal that they don't have anything that can measure up to it in protection, firepower, speed, and accuracy. Says lot when you generals comparing modern ships they have with a ship from WW2 and calling the Iowa's a better warship in all forms over what they have today. Ew no big guns are what makes a battleship not missiles and if they wanted a missile ship they would just build another tin can for that. Missiles also have 3 huge problems with them the cost to make them, advanced components are makes them impractical in using for land based attacks where you would need to drop hundreds of them and production time to make them is long do to needing specialists to just build 1 takes months to make 1 missile that way the navy uses missiles sparing. The Iowa shells hit harder has more explosive force in them and is cheap and vary easy to make do to it being unguided rounds and can fire thousands of rounds without making the navy go broke. Even today in 2023 the US navy has realize that there missile ships have a huge problem and that they may not be able to take on China and Russia with them because they don't have enough missiles for every ship out there and that there resources for missiles would be empty in 1 to 2 weeks of fighting making all there ships near useless. That's why there looking at building a new Iowa class and Montana class of battleships with upgraded semi auto loading 16in/50cal naval guns just like the Iowa has because they can make billions of shells for it everyday with 0 problems and it would fix there land shelling problems and make almost all of China's missiles useless do to there is no ship in there navy that can punch through a battleships armor belt dent yeah but make a hole nope the only missile they would have to watch out for is from the Russian Kirov battlecruseir there missiles can do damage and if they run out of missiles early in the war then it would be back to the battleships of WW2 again just more advanced big guns on them.
@judden4610

@@kuninagako9035 Nice fantasy, there's no way the navy would bring back a century old design, and build it to the modern standard, hell you can even have a semi auto loader 16" guns, the turret would need extending if that mechanism is added. What do you mean not enough missiles? It only takes 1 missile to sink a ship without anti air defense, even if the tico's are being slowly retired the flight III burks can still provide good air missile superiority among other, there is no doubt that the us can take on china and russia together, with its much advance systems like the spy 1-3 radars which has a steady 360 surface search, which means the radar is always updated. Sure missile can't do much damaged through the armor, but it can certainly damage the modern weapon systems in the topside of the ship, hell it could even knockout the radars of the ship, which could lead to the ship sailing blind and no way to fight, it's hard to say it to you but, kid these wagons are cold, cold as a rock bringing them back would need a new kind of skillset, not to the navy but to the future crew whom it will be taking on.

@@kuninagako9035 Not unless you replace the steam turbines, All are obsolete, to the gauges, shells, powder, even the crew are obsolete, unless you wanna have the navy spend billions, even trillions on modernizing this Lady, boy you'd be hoping for, but nah, the ship is too impractical, with the lack of missile defense, the large radar cross sectional would make her an easy target for long range missiles like the BraMos missiles which could be launch 450km from a ship which can remain undetectable, Which makes the battleship a floating coffin in that type of warfare, but sure the Battleship can surely provide accurate land attack shelling support, but nonetheless it has no match against other warships when in Ship to ship combat. Sad to say parts for the ship and shells that have been in the inventory has been demilled or even scrapped, the only way to get the battleship back is to redo everything, Unless you wanna blow the boilers and set off a nice explosion at sea.

@@kuninagako9035 If you're living in the 2012's yes there's is still shells active, but now almost all have been demilitarized, fuses and explosive charges has been removes, all you can see is a hollow steel. Building these again would need a set of new skill set, dyk that the shells used by the Wisky and Mo were built in the 1940's, so no producing shells like these would need a lot of training and redesigning. Also There are no designated shell for each ships the nuclear warheads has long been inactive, why? It has never been used since the late 1960, and also never have been tested, using these decades old nuclear bomb would cause catastrophic failures. The shells like High Capacity Explosive D882 which was extensively used during the Persian Gulf war has all been demilitarized, so if you're hoping to see an Mark 7 fire again, you'd need to reproduce everything to the gun powder, and the crew. Ps. The New Jersey's turret rotating mechanism has been welded shut, so if you're hoping to see the Big J back you would also need to lift the turret out.

@@kuninagako9035 Hard to penetrate but, take note other systems are not as missile proof as the armored parts. Sure the Iowa can attack a modern warship but how about sa ssn or even an ssbn? Iowa's are really vulnerable in that area, and thats where the Russian navy advances the battleships. Even with all that armor, if the exposed fire control systems or even the radars are damaged, that could cause the ship to be loss. Sad to say it to you but bringing the ships back is a death wish. Btw what do you mean with the anti missile? Boy the Iowa really lacked the missile defense, with the chaff as the main defense and the ciws as the backup, and the reload of these systems takes time, and without a proper anti missile system the ship could be hit with multiple incoming vampires. The Iowa's only carried TLAM Tomahawk and Harpoon anti-ship, its not like you can use these to defend the ship, sure the armor can withstand it but with the more vulnerable systems, I think it cant.

@@kuninagako9035 The turrets are not safe, neither are the barrels, almost all of the barrels in the inventory has been scrapped or put into display, nor is there anyone to reline and rerifling the guns, sure these educational Sites have educated you on how a battleship will be brought back, but my old man who was a GM 1st class Petty officer (E-6) on the Big J, says that the last time the New Jersey received any active status maintenance was when it was donated to the museum, sure the Wisky is on a government run agency but that doesn't actually mean that the ship is sea worthy or even worthy to he brought back, thr outdated systems it uses would need to be replaced, it's like building a new ship aswell, compare it to the zumwalts which also costed trillions, the Iowa's could also cost trillions in refurbishment, gun religning, the need for new secondary armament, new missile systems which could be theoretically replaced by the vls, which the ship isn't designed for, new radar systems, sure the sps-49 is still an old reliable, but this does not prove a fact that the old fire control systems cannot be upgraded to match with the new radars, also having a some sort of drone for the shell splash spotting would cost you, production of new shells and powder, training of crew to operate an century old steam turbines, and also a worthy reason why it needs to be brought back. Having to drop bombs at fortification is a much cost effective way than bringing back an old warrior who is sitting cold at rivers and salt water. Sure they still got some fighting action left in them, but they have no place in modern warfare, which is dominated by Naval air superiority and missile systems. Ps. I have been personally to the NJ with my dad, and have had the pleasure of meeting the staff and also Ryan who has been a big help in understanding why the ships are better off as museums.

Don't forget the Wisconsin and new jersey had nuclear rounds that had a yeld of 15 maga tons of tnt aka castle bravo nukes that was fired from it's main gun. Those rounds are still around today for those ships along with its other shells and fire control systems. There all in storage near by the Wisconsin and new jersey if the ships are called on for an emergency like how USS Missouri was called on when Hawaii had that nuke scary from north Korea she was about to set sail till the military got the call it was not real
@judden4610

@@kuninagako9035 Not only you would nuke a city, you would also contaminate your ship, nukes has a 40km explosion radius, which is more than the guns range, 25-30km with a supercharged powder. And not only you would be putting the crew's lives in danger, you would be risking damage to the turbines, as radioactive particles can be present even at the smallest particle. Having these shells were mere just a show off of what these ships can do, but the navy surely knows that it cannot fire a nuclear missile of a battleship, the risk is too high. This is why the shells were scrapped after more than just 15 years in storage, it was impractical and useless, dropping a nuke from a bomber would be much more effective than shooting from a gun, and putting the crew's lives at risk. And no there are no nuclear shells left, they were all demilled and scraped in the 1970s, and the last High Capacity Explosive D shell was scrapped between 2016-2018, so no the ships are now without any shells left in the inventory, unless you wanna shoot some dummy rounds at the enemy. Producing new shells would cost as much as a TLAM missile, which can do as much as the same damage as a 16" shell and also having the range.
