In my headcanon, only a certain minority of raiders have FTL drives installed. For economical reasons.
@cgi20024 жыл бұрын
@HaloBaller9813 there was good reason for this. Their entire fleet was based around a first strike, were their virus knocked out the human ships point defence capacity. Galactica kept this capability intact, and they rapidly realised that when engaging from range, their missiles were ineffective due to the flak screen. So in order to make their missiles more effective, they had to close the range (less flight time) and give Galactica something else to shoot at (the base ship itself). Under normal military logic, this was a bad idea, it would result in excess losses, but this wasn't normal logic, it was literally the entire cylon navy vs 1 ship, they could afford to take heavy losses for the chance to cripple or kill Galactica. Especially since, in nearly every battle that counted, there was a resurrection hub in range. That said, their big screw up was simple, why not arm a raider with nukes, attack Galactica at range with a base star, then have that raider do a precision FTL jump right up next to Galactica's hull, and let loose. Even if your not that precise, jump into the civilian fleet behind Galactica. All told the Cylons were dumb in most of their thinking, except for the initial attack, that was a thing of beauty. Consider Galactica attacks a Cylon base/ship, step 1 is have a raider jump away to a pre-set location, were 20 base ships are waiting, that can immediately respond. The instant travel long range FTL used in BSG is a straight up counter to the Galactica been able to launch any attacks, as your response is immediate and overwhelming.

Two points worth mentioning: Basestars are in-atmosphere capable. The two halves rotate the ship into an aerodynamic configuration. Basestars are capable of both planetary landing and takeoff. Also, Cylon missile tech extends the effective firing range of Basestars to one far greater than their Colonial counterparts, allowing them to directly engage with Colonial Battlestars while still well outside of that Battlestar's firing solution.

While their range is much greater, it still becomes a standoff unless several basestars are able to "bracket" a Battlestar and execute a saturation attack. This is because of the battlestar's flak field and vipers, which as we've seen are able to take up point defense duties and intercept at least part of a barrage. The new Cylon basestars just weren't designed for a head on confrontation with colonial fleet, probably because the first war showed them that it would be impossible to win that way. I'd bet the new basestars are much cheaper to produce however

Replicators VS The Borg please!
@BrianHealy7 жыл бұрын
NightRaven 1901 I would not rule out the Borg so easily 😉
@BrianHealy7 жыл бұрын
+NightRaven 1901 The Borg nanoprobes have proven to be one of the most advanced technological achievements in all of sci-fi. In Star Trek Enterprise a handful of simple drones were able to take a simple transport and turn it into a formidable vessel against a star ship. The Borg need only capture a single block in order to find an exploitable weakness or infect a replicator vessel. In mere hours, the Borg were able to transform part of the Enterprise to suit there needs and that was then most advanced ship in Star Fleet.
@davidkelly42107 жыл бұрын
The Replicators. Their immunity to energy weapons would render the Borg warmachine important. Any attempt to assimilate the Replicators is as likely as not to go the other way. While the Borg would likely be able to make use of ARGs, they'd suffer heavy casualties before figuring it out and the Replicators, sharing the Borg's ability to adapt, would eventually become immune. It'd be a serious fight once the Borg got ARGs but that would only be a short lived reprieve and would come too late to avoid the irreparable damage to the Borg Collective that the initial 1 sided battles would cause. Sheer size would be the only thing preventing the Borg from collapsing as soon as the war started and every other civilization save the Q and Dominion would be swept aside in the chaos.
@BrianHealy7 жыл бұрын
David Kelly you're not taking into account the Borg ability to adapt. Scanning technology is significantly more advanced in the Star Trek universe than Star Gate. We also don't know if the Replicators immunity to energy weapons in the SGU is affective against Borg weaponry. Assuming it is, The Borg would easily sacrifice several cubes in order to find a solution. Remember the only enemy that was able to easily defeat the Borg used bio organic weaponry, which is the complete opposite of what the Replicators are.
@davidkelly42107 жыл бұрын
NightRaven 1901 Asguardian weapons (save ARGs) didn't do shit to the Replicators. All it did was make 1 Replicator into 10,000 which is how they lost their home world. Projectiles worked better but only against bugs. Ships and human forms could shrug off and repare damage.

Are they balanced though? Basestar is basically a strikecraft dependend carrier, while Colonial Battlestar is a proper warship. Neither side has more than couple unit classes, both sides are lacking incredibly heavily in some ways. Cylons have no warships that can take and deal some serious damage by themselves. No one has any dedicated bombers, you would think they'd need one. There are no combat support ships or smaller classes. All you see is one capital ship type, one fighter, one small utility craft. And that's literally it. Or think about it this way: try to play an RTS game with 3 unit types...
@DrewLSsix7 жыл бұрын
NightRaven 1901. you can always assume that we never saw the full array of ships available due to the Galacticas semi decommissioned status and the fleets near total destruction. You would think Pegasus would have a more complete compliment of small craft but we dont know what state she was in at the start of the attack or what was lost in the escape and following engagements. as for out of continuity reasons its obvious that budget and productuon time is a major concern, the show was an impressive production at the time but its no surprise much of the budget was used up just producing what we saw. then theres the creative aspect, BSG was essentially a drama focused on people. even if more resources were available to flesh out the world some it may well have distracted from the center of the show its self. And lastly theres the challenge of using all these things in a story that makes sense, the show must have been a challenge already....can we really expect the creators to produce a convincing military on top of a compelling story?
@Pouk3D7 жыл бұрын
We know (it was said somewhere), that the Vipers are more than half the size exactly from the mentioned film restrictions. The film set would be much bigger, less compact, more expensive and that was the whole and only reason.
@ryanlow61147 жыл бұрын
+NightRaven 1901 Actually, the only disadvantage a smaller superiority fighter would have by being smaller is their lower storage space. Considering Vipers are mostly meant to serve as support craft for Battlestars, they would not need to be outfitted for long-range missions that would require large quantities of ammo and fuel to be stored on the craft. In fact, a smaller frame would actually _benefit_ the viper, making it a far harder target to hit in a vaccum.

Raptors can use nuclear missiles, and both Basestars and Battlestars hold dozens of nuclear missiles that can be volley-fired en masse. Dedicated bombers are slower, while the Raptors can use their electronic warfare and rockets to engage capital ships. As for support ships both fleets actually have a massive plethora to select from, from specialized stealth battlestar, heavy cruisers and frigates to Cylon ewar corvettes, missile carriers and gunships.

I think it is not thrue that modern cylon raider is more immune to high accelerations then colonial pilots. The old, warraider was more immune, because it had only inorganic components, thus the only thing that limits it's acceleration, is the operation of the controll panels of the warraider, by the centurions (if acceleration is enough, the fictitious force will pull away the centurion's hand from the controll panels) However, if you saw the 5 and 6 episode from the series, you know the fact that the cylon raider's interior is largely organic with organs and vascular system, that sustain a brain. It is also certain that the artificially developed cylon tissues's genome is very similar to human genom (because it built from experimentation with humans as you can see in BSG: Razor), due to the fact that humanoid cylons can crossbreed with colonial humans, and also all cylon assets that has organic component shares the same genom (season 3 episode 7, the effect of the LCMV on every cylon assets). Thus, the cylon raider's organic part must have similar base structure as humans, with little difference. So technically cylon raiders have the same flaws against high accelerations as their colonial counterpart. High acceleration must cause the same problem in the raiders vascular system as in humans, like blackouts, redouts, because the fictitious force going to drain or flow blood into its brain, thus over or under-pressurizing it. Enough acceleration cause rupture it's vascular system, thus cause a stroke, and so on, cause the same damage as on human pilots. This is why the raider cannot be significantly more resilient to acceleration than a human pilot. I think, from cylons, it was a serious mistake that they chosed to be organic lifeforms. They shoud have been staying inorganic, and develop their hardware. An inorganic fighter drone with inorganic computer, would bear easily hundred times higher acceleration then a raider, or a human pilot can bear. Moreover an inorganic computer doesn't need life support system, thus freeing valuable space for other subsystems. Moreover, it inorganic systems, like ftl, RCS, are more easier to integrate into an inorganic computer (don't need to convert data), thus can have far more reaction time. Moreover the specific computation capabilities of inorganic computer can be far higher then an organic brain.(if you dont believe, for example try to compete with a computer, in solving numerically a differential equation, or compete with a computer "who" can perform more quickly a numerical integral algoritmh)

You know, I've been begging to know what's the max jump range of each type of Hyperlight FTL drive they have? They make it sound like if you got a good enough navigation computer, you can jump from one side of the Galaxy to the other but that can't as there has to be a limitation in the drive itself. I keep thinking that the Raptor can jump like 3 light years or so and the Battlestars can go 30 or something. Never thought the Raiders can jump even farther. I knew they were more advance but damn.

The episode where Starbuck took the stolen Cylon Raider and jump all the way back to Caprica show some what the better jump capabilities.
@SultanOfAwesomeness7 жыл бұрын
I think that in theory, FTL actually HAS unlimited range. It's just that it's range is limited to how far your optical and navigational instruments can see. You've gotta be able to see the target you're going to jump to, and then run the navigational calculations. For example, imagine trying to jump to a planet. You can see it through your ship's instruments, but you've also gotta take into account the planet's travel speed, orbital velocity, and tons of other shit. Without calculating this stuff, you could exit FTL anywhere. Perhaps even so far away that you won't be able to recognize any stars. Or even worse, you could exit inside your destination, or in a sun or something. Sorry for the extensive response. It's 5 am here and I can't exactly get all my thoughts out in the most coherent way possible.

The new base stars are missile platforms designed to perform the extermination of the colony worlds from orbit with raiders also firing nukes to destroy battlestars. Basestars relied on the navigation program backdoor to disarm enemy ships. They were unable to disarm the Galactica or Pegasus and employed overwhelm tactics to make up for the Basestars lack of counter to colonial flak. With the battlestars jumping away the Cylons had to keep up with their ftl capable fleet of missile platforms and had no time to build new ships that were better suited to pvp battle.

Odyssey w/ ZPM vs a full Cylon fleet protecting a Resurrection Hub...
@Spacedock7 жыл бұрын
A ship with nearly indestructible shields and ludicrously powerful beam lasers, against a group of unshielded missile platforms. I love BSG, even more than I love Stargate, but this would be a damn short fight xD

Its not even a fight anymore, its a massacre
@galbert1177 жыл бұрын
Could the Raiders jump inside the Odyssey's shield, since it often shows the Asgard shields as a bubble? If so, the Raiders could jump en-masse inside the Odyssey's shields then launch all their nukes. Might be able to do something then...
@darwinxavier35167 жыл бұрын
Depends on how precise their jump engines are. The space between the shield bubble and the hull would be relatively small. And the Odyssey would likely be moving at max sub light speed making it much more difficult. It would also bring up the question of why this jump in and swarm with nukes tactic wasn't totally common in BSG.
@williamnixon39947 жыл бұрын
You know, I think it's because jump drives don't play nice in close proximity with each other. Think of it like a jamming field the ship naturally generates because of FTL operation. Or it could be for drama, take your pick!

Balanced and versatile my arse. Slow ass missilbuses and light fighters with peashooters are most definitley not a balanced fleet.

I wonder how they would fare against a Republic Venator class battle group.
@danielm.46967 жыл бұрын
I think that Cylon fighters would overwhelm Republic's fighter and bomber squadrons, but Venators have shields that could make rockets against them not very effective and really mean canons that could do some nasty things to Basestars so it depends on the situation.
@Lukos00367 жыл бұрын
Republic fighters had shields as well. It wasn't until the Empire that they ditched all the extras for disposable screaming coffins. That being said Star Wars shields aren't terribly effective and if a fighter can fly inside their perimeter I think a projectile wouldn't have much trouble doing the same.
@BraindeadCRY7 жыл бұрын
Star Wars tech is advanced far beyond BSG tech. I honestly doubt that the Cylons would stand a chance. Im no expert on Star Wars lore but I have noticed that almost no one uses ballistic weapons anymore. If they where still effective they would get used, so it stands to reason that shields, armor or some other tech has advanced too far for most ballistic weapons to be effective. BSG weapons on the other hand aren't terribly far advanced beyond what we have in the 21st century, and their ships defenses rely almost completely on old fashioned armor plating, which was designed to stop explosions or projectiles not energy or plasma weapons. And Star Wars ships have armor plating too. Metalurgy is clearly advanced far past what BSG has so even their default armor plating is likely to be far more resistant than that of a BSG universe capital ship if the shields should ever fail. But I think the most important factor is sensor capabilities. A star wars fleet has the advantage that they will be able to see the Cylon fleet first and have superior jump tech allowing them to choose when and where they wish to engage. An advantage that the Cylons usually hold. This makes their resurrection ships vulnerable.
@Lukos00367 жыл бұрын
There were projectile weapons in Star Wars, but they were mostly small arms. The closest thing to them on ships or fighters were proton torpedoes. The shields on Star Wars ships would stop energy weapons but any vessel could, I if I recall correctly, fly through them easily enough. Which is why they employed fighters against capital ships so often. Though I concede Star Wars has a huge tech advantage over BSG, the Grand Republic Army fought in much the same fashion. Which capital ships playing a supporting role to squadrons of fighters and bombers. Which is what prompted my comparison between the two.

Two things I never liked about the Reboot main series era Cylon fleet. 1: The lack of any warships between the Heavy Raiders, which always seemed like better armed craft for the Raptor role to me, and the Basestars We know the had smaller warships during the first war, and the Coloinal navy had smaller warships all along. (Though we don't see any during the TV series Adama mentions commanding some in a flashback). I've never been fond of fleets that have just strike craft and large capital ships for warships and I never will be. 2: Why did they not include short range weapons and especially point defense grids on the Basestars? The Basestars are effective at long range combat but are utterly screwed if a Battlestar gets in close without being crippled by the virus, and I see no logical reason not to have some anti-missile defenses. Many human combat craft might favor guns over missiles but they still included anti-ship missiles in their armaments so it doesn't make sense to not include point defense weapons. AFAIK we don't know how long building a Basestar takes, or how heavy of a resource investment they are though given that the Cylons never dropped a dozen Basestars onto the Galactica's fleet to finish it off I'm guessing they are rare so not taking precautions to help prevent losing them to missile barrages is unreasonable.
@emilsinclair4190 Жыл бұрын
Because they did not expect anyone to survive the attack. And to create this big alpha strike they needed all thw rockets they could fit. And to kill the small groups of survivers fighters are perfect. If nearly everything gets nuked the thing to survive is not big enough to make a ship bigger than the heavy fighter necessary
@roguerifter9724 Жыл бұрын
Its still illogical IMO. Gambling on no one surviving from an enemy fleet of over a hundred capital ships and we have no idea how many smaller warships to the point where your entire fleet is built based on that assumption makes no sense to me. Especially since what we see indicates there weren't that many Basestars compared to Battlestars before the attack. You never see more then a few basestars at a time while the Colonial fleet and around 120 Battlestars based on the miniseries
@emilsinclair4190 Жыл бұрын
@Rogue Rifter at the start of the civil war we see a lot off them. And if we sum up all the ships we see flying around alone it looks like the number of bases tars is also high. However you might be right that the number of basestars is comparatively low. But this would actually explain why the basestars were build how they were build. If we assume that the number off them is low this means that the only chance was the virus. The virus gave them some time. During this time they had to destroy as much as possible or they would have risked the enemies coming online again. The basestar is build exactly for that. Do as much damage as you can in the small ammount of time during which the battlestars are defenseless. Every ship that is smaller/has weapons that are nor optimised for this alpha strike is missing damage during this alpha strike. Missing damage means that a battlestar might survive. Their backup plan were the sleeper agents. And with the information gained by the sleeper agents they had a relatively accurate picture about where how many human ships were. I mean only 2 battlestars survived. One bc it's computer systems were powered down and because the nuclear explosion binded their systems. So basically luck with luck. And the other ship was a museum ship with multiple sleeper agents on board. Only bc of plot armor did this ship survive. I mean if boomer would not have fought her programming the fleet would have most likely died. Remember when she fought her programing to find water when they lost nearly all off it? So it was not realy a gamble. They calculated their chances. And they were relatively certain to while out all bases tars with their alpha strike/sleeper agents. The halactica only survived bc of plot armor. So in a realistic scenario only 1 battlestar would have survived. And only bc if extremly lucky circumstances. And they also had sleeper agents on board.

How would the Cylon do in an all out war against the U.N.S.C? Assuming "Contact Harvest" began when the Cylon made first contact instead of the Covenant? My Theory is the U.N.S.C Would own but they would take heavy losses. Any thoughts anyone???
@SultanOfAwesomeness7 жыл бұрын
Ooh, now that's a cool idea for a matchup. As much as I hate to admit it though, I think Cylons would come out on top. All they'd have to do is sit back and hurl wave after wave of fighters and strike craft at any UNSC ship unfortunate enough to be close enough to hit. I mean, aside from carriers, most UNSC ships don't exactly have a lot in the way of fighter craft themselves. Even less if they're just frigates.

@SultanOfAwesomeness7 жыл бұрын
+Rebel Spy What about them? Space is big, and even the fastest objects take time to travel through it. All a basestar would have to do is to sit far out enough for the MAC round to take a decent amount of time getting there, and either dodge accordingly, or hell, even jump. They can just rely on their fighter wing to wreak havoc. Not to mention that MAC guns take a while to reload and all that jazz.
