Old retired U.S. Navy Gunner's Mate 1st Class here. A magazine is a Navy term for an ammunition store space (room). They can be as small as a home coat closet, or as large as a warehouse. Navy ships such as aircraft carriers like the Galactica are essentially a floating bomb wrapped in jet fuel.

Few things. That survivor count in the title updates every episode. Usually accounting for deaths in the previous episode. Oh, and the DVD covers are insane... ignore them. The man they went back for the medkit for was Socinus, the hanger bay technician that lied for the Chief during the witch hunt tribunal back in season 1 when one of the Cylons suicided themselves on Galactica. Jammer was also introduced in that episode when it was revealed to the general population that Cylons look like humans. He raised a stink and was suspicious. BSG keeps decent track of it's tertiary characters. Fun fact, when Geata goes to pull out the network lines, you can see that the virus did indeed breach the last firewall before the network is updated. BSG WAS filmed in Canada. In Vancouver to be exact. Pretty much anyone who isn't Adama, Roslin, Lee, Starbuck, Baltar or a significant guest star is Canadian. Just a heads up that episode 10 of season two has an extended version available on the DVDs. I'm not sure about the breakdown on the Blu-Rays, but on the DVDs it's on the Season 2.5 discs as the first episode.

One of the minor things I love about BSG 2004 is the small details; during the battle where they network Galactica, you can see just before Geata severs the network, for a split second on the wideshot, you can see that the firewalls were breached, look at 16:52 fully paused, all the networked systems on Geatas screen are blinking red, they've been breached

there's a concept in network security called an Air Gap or an Air Wall, where you have computer systems that are physically located next to each other but aren't networked together, which means there is absolutely no way for someone to hack from one system to the other, but someone physically on location can work between them or transfer files using a physical device like a flash drive. It's the sort of setup you have for high security locations like nuclear power plants, air traffic control, or the Pentagon. It definitely makes sense that Galactica and the other First Cylon War battlestars would be set up like this, so that the Command Center can be filled with computers that all do different things, but since they aren't networked, the Cylons couldn't hack into something that's exposed to the outside, like say, the computer that listens to radio traffic, and then use the network to access Fire Control, Life Support, Propulsion, etc to remote-control the ship and turn it into a hostile. And then Gaeta violates that design principle and bridges the air gap!

This was the season, for me, personally, where Ronald D Moore's Battlestar Galactica became Ronald D Moore's Battlestar Galactica. The first season was amaze-balls, to be sure, but it was mid-season gig, so they had to play all of their cards at once. Season Two is where BSG gets really, really deep and weird and, in my humble opinion, wonderful. You have no idea what's coming and you couldn't pay me to tell you! ^_~

I always found it funny that Lee doesn't know what "roll the hard six" means. I always thought it was obviously a reference to the maneuver you pull in a viper when there's someone on your tail and you have no other options: you roll hard and re-orient to your "six" (behind you) in order to fire back. They do it many times in the show and it's a dangerous maneuver because while it lets you shoot back, you're also basically a sitting duck.
@NativeNewMexican
@NativeNewMexican 2 жыл бұрын
I've always thought the term as being from a craps (or similar) bet. There's only one way to roll a hard six: a three and a three, meaning it's a hard thing to do but sometimes you gotta get lucky and the only way to get lucky is to try. It's called that in "our universe" but it certainly could mean what you're saying I suppose.

30:25 "Sometimes you gotta roll a hard six" is a play on words: in navigation you call directions like a clock face, 12 is your front, 6 is your back. "Roll a hard six" means "pull a 180 and get the fuck out", but also literally "roll" a six, as in dice, as in good luck. it means to go against the tide and succeed, either by going against your orders (or, willpower) or having a fluke. later in the series there's a twist on that: "Sometimes you've got to hold that hard six", which is the opposite: keep at it, against the forces telling you to pull out.

He intentionally sold out the human race and was helping the Cylons hunt them down. Also he was a white guy with a perm. He was very 70s. All he needed was a Members Only jacket. He was a good character because he was constantly fighting with the Cylon leadership. He was either being humiliated and begging for his life or turning the tables.

That this was filmed in Canada was mentioned. Much of the sci-fi made in the 00s was made by people who got their start working on Stargate SG-1. Because they got so good at it, it got cheaper and cheaper, which is why things after, like BSG, looks so good for the price. Later things like Sanctuary, Killjoys, Continuum, Van Helsing, Travelers etc who no one watched, was still able to be made because it was so efficient. Van Helsing is probably the best example, instead of expensive actors, sets or effects, it's just filmed in the forest with a tiny crew, no matter who insanely camp the scripts got it was still made with 100% sincerity by everyone involved, from make-up to actors to set design.
@patrickcromwell7554
@patrickcromwell7554 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately though Sanctuary slowly declined after season one. The decision to remove Ashley from the main cast was unfortunate and caused the show to decline in my opinion. It went on for two more seasons so obviously there were other factors involved. But still it was a show whose premise was underappreciated. The whole use of complete CGI environments was a unique approach but I'm guessing it didn't get the love it needed to keep going. I mean there were SOME practical sets built, but MOST were all green blocks made to LOOK like other stuff through CGI. And Travelers, I feel really deserved another season. Personally I'd like to know what happens to everyone. That cliff hanger is just balls. A teaser like that is just a slap in the face.

It's also why you see a lot of the same actors in shows filmed in Vancouver. Michael Hogan, who plays Colonel Tigh in BSG, also appears in Man in the High Castle, as does the actor who plays Leoben and an actor who plays another humanoid Cylon model. Louis Ferreira, who played Hall in Travelers, was Colonel Young in Stargate Universe. Patrick Gilmore, who played David in Travelers, was a recurring character on SGU and had at least one guest spot in Stargate Atlantis. The actor who played Phillip in Travelers had a 2-3 episode guest spot in SGU as well. There's a ton of overlap of Stargate and Travelers actors including those who played Grace, the recurring hospital doctor, Amanda Tapping, Trevor's mom, Ellis, and Andrew Graeme. Hell, Racetrack in BSG plays MacLaren's wife in Travelers. It can be sort of fun to spot all the overlap.

FYI, there are deleted scenes from these episodes that provide a LOT of context. Also I think I can help you with the "Why are they speaking French?" thing. The reason is context. At the time, US Studios were very, VERY focused on stopping online piracy. That meant DVD players (which were the thing when Grandpa was alive) were regional coded. Region1 was US/North America. But I think if you are watching this on Peacock, then they are streaming from a region 2 copy. Strangely, region 4 works on all DVD players and the reason I know this is because I have family in the states and whenever I visited them in the early 2000s I always brought some DVD players from Harvey Normans as gifts.

25:43 "Baptize it" that critique made me laugh. I went to a Catholic high school and had an English teacher who would often make the erroneous threat to unruly students of giving them a 25 minute underwater baptism.

What i always loved about the character writing in BSG is that god seems to absolutely love Gaius Baltar. More than anyone else. 😜 All those imperfections, all those negative personality traits and yet its is clear that god really favours and thinks highly of him. 😉

If you watch the scene where Gaeta cuts the network, you'll see for a split second that the cylons had gotten through the last firewall.

I like how the end of last season as a viewer already were thinking "how do they get out of this mess" and then they just add some extra crap on that mess so the situation is even more dire - and exten the time they get out of the mess they were in the last season. (It kinda reminds me of the situation in 33, where you realize that jumping away beyond the Red LIne at the end of the mini-series didn't even begin to solve their problems!) I think the Caprica storyline will be more to your liking then can be expected at this point (no promise by me that you'll love it, but the dynamic is different than season 1). I think at this point I was very interested in the Kobol storyline and learn more about the Cylon/Colonial mythology and history, but I also really wondered about the political situation. Adama and Roslin are amazing characters and their dual leadership was really crucial, starting already in the mini-series, but where could they go from what happend. On a side note: Other than perhaps the Cylon downloading process, it seems that neither Cylons nor Colonials actually have FTL communications. That means they can't just broadcast from afar, you need to send a ship (a Raptor or Raider). The Wireless is still just normal radio signals that are limited to th e speed of light and won't help you if you're light years (heck, just light months) away .

Are you sure the Cylon's haven't replaced your kids with duplicate agents? A lot of Kid Disruptions seems to be happening in You, Me and the BSG lately. In Reactions (like WAR) there are no coincidences! Colonel Tigh and Mr. Gaeta really shine in this episode. but couldb';t Cylon High Command spring for a Nuke?

Back when I initially watched this way back in 2004, I was mostly interested in if Adama survived or not, given that cliff hanger of an ending in Season 1. I so love both of your reactions!! Lol...I'm glad you kept the blooper type stuff in (like your kids interrupting again). Lol..oh and the Mrs. initial recollection when you asked her what she remembered...I almost fell off my chair laughing!! That final cliff hanger and all she has to say is "they defeated someone somewhere" or something like that. lol!! Anyways I look forward to how you react to future episodes in Season 2. I tell you, this is the season where BSG75 separates itself from the 1979 Battlestar Galactica. There aren't too many reboots or remakes I can think of off the top of my head that are actually better than it's original source material. I'm glad both of you are watching it with new eyes. Thank you!

Rolling a Hard Six is a fighter Parlance, it means even though you are being closely pursued by an enemy, it is sometimes necessary to reverse course and pass nose to nose an Expose yourself to a snap-shot rather than attempt to accellerate and escape.

Favourite storyline: I actually enjoyed both main plots of the ship and Caprica. I know (and agree) that Helo's story really dragged on in season 1, and it may seem frustrating that now Starbuck is there too, but I will say without spoiling anything, it lays the groundwork for another storyline with a deeper understanding of the cylons, it's definitely not as aimless as Helo's story felt.

I forgot about Tigh's line calling Baltar a a shift SoB. How many people nodded yes at that I wonder? It is nice the show acknowledges that the crew finds him to be creepy and evasive. Considering he is sexing himself up half the time someone walks into a room he is in.

I think there are only four members of the top cast that aren't Canadian. Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell are American and Jamie Bamber (Apollo) and James Callis (Baltar) are British. Grace Park (Boomer/Sharon) was born in LA but her family moved to Canada when she was less than one year old.
